IB results out tomorrow

DS expecting IB results tomorrow afternoon. He needs 7,6,6 at HL for Physics at Warwick (same for his insurance, Bristol) but has since decided he wants to try for Durham through clearing (because his GF is going there assuming she gets the results she needs Confused. He knows it’s a long shot and that he will probably have to wait for A level results.

Anyone else’s DC awaiting IB results tomorrow?

I just posted the sane thing in the further education topic - not sure how to link it though......

truelove · 05/07/2020 13:42

@Chocolatecake12 so you did! Looks like just us then! What does your DS need?

OP posts:
Chocolatecake12 · 05/07/2020 20:38

He’s done the IBCP so engineering, higher physics, maths and Spanish.
He’s got an unconditional offer so should be ok. But he’s hoping for a good result in the engineering. Not sure about physics as he did find that hard.
He’s now working tomorrow so not sure what time he’ll be able to log in and look! He also thinks the website will crash!!
Are you feeling nervous? How’s your ds feeling?

truelove · 05/07/2020 23:22

He’s feeling ok but his GF is now feeling nervous as she’s heard on the grapevine that some people who have found out their results (schools have them today) are finding they’ve got less than they were expecting eg. Predicted 40+ points, got 37. Had a look on TSR earlier but can’t see anything on there. No point worrying I know but still.

Hello!

DD receiving IB results tomorrow. She keeps saying that it won't feel as if the results are hers. She kept on top of course work and extended essay etc so I have tried to reassure her that it will be based on her best efforts.
Has a very low uni offer - fingers crossed for them all.

truelove · 05/07/2020 23:51

Found a results thread on TSR. Those of a nervous disposition are best to avoid! It seems the schools‘ previous results are playing a big part regardless of predictions for the few that have posted.

Only time will tell.....
Good luck today. Be back later to post results.....

truelove · 06/07/2020 09:20

Yes, good luck everyone!

Good luck everyone.

SeasonFinale · 06/07/2020 11:03

BTW there are no Physics courses available in clearing at Durham (yet). Clearing opened this morning.

0DimSumMum0 · 06/07/2020 11:11

Where is your son going @Chocolatecake12?

Chocolatecake12 · 06/07/2020 12:28

My ds is hoping to go to oxford Brookes.

Just found out he may not get the engineering part of his result today and that may be August. It’s very unclear.

Monkey2001 · 06/07/2020 12:36

I have no vested interest in IB, DS2 getting GCSE results and I am watching to see how this first batch of statistically driven results come out. Lots of stress on Reddit - they seem to be saying that their "IA" exams have been externally marked and are driving IB results, presumably in addition to school history and predictions. I know very little about IB so do not really follow what they are saying.

Remember that anybody who is shocked is more likely to post, so you often get distorted pictures on social media.

Good luck to any DC waiting, and remember that the universities are likely to be flexible this year.

truelove · 06/07/2020 12:57

Thanks @SeasonFinale. He can’t apply for Physics as he’d already applied and didn’t get an offer despite having the right predictions, strong PS and GCSEs (he wrote for feedback). They had 1300 applicants for 150 places. He’s hoping to get a place for Natural Sciences. I suspect there will be a long wait until A level results as everything is so unknown this year.

Oratory1 · 06/07/2020 13:06

Monkey, IA is effectively course work. There is a much higher proportion of coursework in IB than for A levels and, unlike A levels, as I understand it the course work done this year was all completed, submitted and externally moderated so will have a greater bearing on the end results than for A levels

SeasonFinale · 06/07/2020 14:11

I would imagine NatSci is more competitive than Physics at Durham though. Currently the only clearing course available at Durham is Accounting and Finance with a year abroad but remember there will possibly be more coming online as people miss grades.

truelove · 06/07/2020 14:33

We’ve been looking at what’s available through Clearing (a bit pessimistic but just in case!) Physics available at Warwick, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester......

Is there an active thread for this? We have just had my daughter’s results. Its not a pretty picture, dramatically lower grades awarded than her predictions / assessments

Monkey2001 · 06/07/2020 15:48

@nightsoutasap sorry to hear that. There seemed to be quite a few people getting very different marks from their predictions on Student Room and Reddit.

Has she got what she needs to progress. I think this is the thread, it is just very quiet.

truelove · 06/07/2020 15:49

Just this thread I think @nightsoutasap Sorry to hear about your daughter’s results. Can she get advice from her school?

OP posts:
Ciancianese · 06/07/2020 15:49

My daughter was resitting maths SL, schools mark was reduced massively by external moderation. School had marked it independently and given feedback as she would not have resat if there were any doubts. Her entire grade is based on the IA. Something is wrong here- I think her grade has been adjusted down by schools historical grade weighting. I am looking on the student room too- maybe upsets there as well.

truelove · 06/07/2020 15:53

By the sounds of it from DS and his friends, DS’s school’s predictions seem to have been spot on. DS got 42/45 with 776 at higher level. Needs 766 for his firm of Warwick but has emailed Durham expecting it will either be a no or a wait until A levels are out.

OP posts:
nightsoutasap · 06/07/2020 16:03

Her school (which is in Denmark) has lodged a formal complaint already, as virtually all their students have not got their predicted grades. She has insufficient grades for her first choice (Edinburgh) and her second choice (Nottingham). There is a massive discrepancy. For example, in maths she was predicted a 6. She has never received below a 5 in any test or coursework. She received a 3. She’s 5 marks away from what she needed for Edinburgh, which her predictions were well in excess of.

MillicentMartha · 06/07/2020 16:04

Well done Truelove’s DS. Cross fingers for Durham.

Seems like a bit of a mixed bag for IB, generally, though. UCAS predictions are (for A levels) usually over generous and a sort of best case scenario. Could that be the same for IB, or are these predictions more recent?

MillicentMartha · 06/07/2020 16:06

Sorry, crossposted, @nightsoutasap. That does sound an extremely harsh result. Does the school have a good record of making accurate predictions? Can you appeal?
