Applying for uni in 2021...

Parsley65 · 20/02/2020 15:13

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

Oh no, have I killed the chat?

Revengeofthepangolins · 11/01/2021 16:13

Snork @errorofjudgement. No, just needs a university to put out a tranche of offers and traffic will rise again Smile

MarchingFrogs · 11/01/2021 17:29

Finally persuaded DS2 to actually open Track and check what his offers so far are. No huge surprises: UEA ABB, Sussex ABB, or BBB if firmed, Birmingham BBB (already 'adjusted') and York AAB.

nancypineapple · 11/01/2021 18:49

Ds has not recieved any offers although he did only hand in his form mid December. His economics teacher e-mailed to say he will probably have to wait a while as some of his choices offer at the end and his course is v competitive. He wants LSE,UCH, Warwick,Nottingham and insurance Loughborough for Economics. Anyone else's dc been offered for economics yet? We doubt he will get LSE as he hasn't got further maths although is very capable in maths.

calculatorqueen · 11/01/2021 18:57

@nancypineapple DS2 is applying for economics he was an early applicant due to applying to Oxford but unfortunately didn't get an interview. His offers are Bath (A*AA), York (AAB), Exeter (BBB) and Birmingham (CCC). DS1 is at Loughborough studying engineering and loves it there.

Has anyone had a virtual online offer holders day yet? DS has one at York on Wednesday will be interesting to see if it's much different to a virtual open day.

pistachioicecream · 11/01/2021 20:01

I need to find a way to stop thinking about it all. Trying not to ask DS every time he comes downstairs if he's heard anything else ;-)

Because he got his first offer the day after he applied (just fluke good timing I think) we're now impatient to hear from the others! He's waiting for Lancaster, Loughborough, Sheffield and Cardiff for Geography.

Hope all our year 13's are getting on ok with online lessons again and managing to keep their motivation going. I know everyone I work with is really struggling at the moment so sure our teens aren't finding it easy either.

Wornout12108 · 11/01/2021 20:20

Hi,
We are in a similar situation, my son had offers from two working 48hours of applying but we are still waiting on Lancaster & Sheffield.

errorofjudgement · 11/01/2021 20:23

I hope we’re in for a long wait now because that would mean DD is still being considered by the drama schools 🤷‍♀️

@NancyPineapple @calculatorqueeen my DH did his Economics undergrad at York, then a couple of years later did his Masters at LSE (a very long time ago) he had a blast! Good luck to your DSs

GaribaldiGirl · 11/01/2021 20:29

Do you get invited to an online offer day or is it something you be proactive about (unlikely with DS) and need to sign up for? Not sure how he is going to pick given he’s not visited any of them...

KittyMcKitty · 11/01/2021 20:35

Ds is in a similar boat - applied mid November. Liverpool offered within 24 hours and then QMUL in about a week. Since then Manchester have only acknowledged receipt of his application and the 2 x Bristol courses have put him on hold.

calculatorqueen · 12/01/2021 10:10

@GaribaldiGirl DS just received an e mail inviting him to the offer holders day, it certainly wasn't through being proactive and the e mail he showed me said 'reminder', so he'd clearly ignored the 1st one! Hmm

pourmeanotherglass · 13/01/2021 09:34

DD enjoyed her offers holders day at York. She had a 1 to 1 chat with a tutor, and some chats with student ambassadors.
Now that she has had a rejection from Oxford, I think it may be between York and Edinburgh ( not had offer from Edinburgh yet).

MarchingFrogs · 13/01/2021 10:04

With a bit more of a prod, DS2 has now checked for offer holder day details and booked two: York on February 3rd and Sussex (I think, or maybe UEA...) a week on Saturday. Birmingham and UEA (or possibly Sussex...) no details yet. Pity they are all likely to be virtual this time, as the lunch provided at his sister's offer holder day at UEA was lovely, featuring Thai salad pots and 'bottomless' flapjacksSmile.

minesawine · 13/01/2021 12:23

My DD has just firmed Portsmouth and has Nottingham Trent as insurance for Animation. Just relieved it has now been done.

calculatorqueen · 13/01/2021 16:58

@pourmeanotherglass We were impressed with the York offer holders day too (I lurked in the background!). It was more interactive than we were expecting, DS got to do an economics experiment and ask questions (via chat) to lecturers and current students.

I still think it's going to be really difficult for him to decide which Uni to go for, he was also redirected from Oxford. On paper I think his choices of York, Bath and Exeter are very similar in terms of campus, city and reputation, and however well these offer holder days are run, they are not the same as a visit Sad.

NotDonna · 13/01/2021 17:40

Ooh hadn’t heard about any offer holders days so must ask DD if she has. Highly likely she’s done them and I’ve no clue. Seems to inform me on a ‘need to know’ basis but she doesn’t appreciate that I ‘need to know’ everything.
@nancypineapple DD1 also applying for Economics and sent hers in late October. Heard from Bristol quite quickly with their standard offer of A*AA, similarly quick from Birmingham with ABB (reduced), rejected by LSE & nothing as yet from Bath.

nancypineapple · 13/01/2021 18:10

Thanks @NotDonna. Well done to you dd for her Bristol and Birmingham offers! Which one does she prefer? Bath is also amazing for economics. I haven't heard of any offers yet from LSE- I don't think my DS will be offered there as he isn't doing further maths although he really wants to go .

NotDonna · 13/01/2021 19:21

nancy no further maths for DD either and her gcse profile isn’t stellar. It was always a very long shot but no harm in trying. She likes Bristol as a first choice and Birmingham as an insurance, at the mo. She was really liking Bath but even if she did get an offer now, I think she’s been put off by the slow offer.
I’m still worried about a lack of exams and it going to teacher assessments & how they’ll be calculated. Not a lot we can do about it though.

Wornout12108 · 13/01/2021 22:51

Just popping on, glad there seem to be more offers being made. My son was offered Lancaster today for History. He is very pleased as he was worried he wouldn't get an offer as he really liked the course modules. Still waiting on Sheffield.
We will hopefully get to visit Lancaster before he needs to make his firm decision.
Manchester is the only one we had made it too pre-Covid.

NotDonna · 13/01/2021 22:55

Well done to your DS wornout hopefully the others will start trickling in soon - most likely after 29th Jan now.

HensInTheSkirtingBoard · 14/01/2021 16:14

So ds has decided that he would, after all, rather go to Strathclyde (his insurance) than York (his firm).

He needs to contact both universities to get them to agree the change and I'm not sure how likely that will be?

I agree with him that Strathclyde is probably a better fit for him but I hope it's not going to go against him if he tries to swap...

NotDonna · 14/01/2021 18:56

Given it’s such early days with people still awaiting offers I’d have thought it quite straightforward. Fingers crossed!

Andi2020 · 14/01/2021 20:15

@KittyMcKitty I see your teen applied to Liverpool is it John Moores
My dd is interested in applying here for 2022.
I know nothing about applying to university she thinks she just applies and gets in but I'm telling her you need certain points for courses and hers is 112 she is doing
Business ICT Sports as her 3 subjects
2 off these are Btec so I'm telling her she will need 2 distinctions in theses and an A in the other please guide me if I'm correct with schools closed no one to ask.

Hi

Sorry no not John Moores. That said I know a couple of people who have children there and they are very happy.

The individual course websites will have all the information about requirements/ A level grades / Btec grades etc.

Good luck - it does seem overwhelming when you first look!

NotDonna · 14/01/2021 22:28

@Andi2020 I’ve no idea about John Moore’s university but as McKitty says the course requirements will be on the website under course details. Also the admissions officers are incredibly helpful. You can find their details also on website page for the course she’s interested in. They’ll take a few days to reply but you’ve plenty of time. It’s worth looking at similar courses / universities and seeing if requirements are the same. Check the course modules are what she fancies too as some courses have similar sounding names and even the same codes but slightly different modules. Good luck to your DD.
