@Monkey2001 absolutely delighted for you and your son. You probably don't remember that our children interviewed for 3 of the same unis last year and had very similar GCSEs and UKcat. I have followed his progress with fingers crossed. So pleased for him. Xx

sergeantmajormum · 07/02/2020 22:18

Congratulations miniMonkey. DD now 1st year medic, followed your sad times last year and so so glad it has worked out. His perseverance, resilience and determination will stand him in great stead for Med school and his career beyond that. Enjoy your celebrations!

Lilabella · 07/02/2020 22:23

Lurking for a long time. Congratulations Monkey Jr and Ladsmum. Was crossing fingers for both. So happy.

Monkey2001 · 07/02/2020 22:24

Thank you all for your encouragement and your congratulations. DS out now, but I don't remember the last time I had so many hugs and smiles from him. Celebratory curry tomorrow!!

What fabulous news! Well done and enjoy the celebrations.

Baytreemum · 07/02/2020 23:56

Well done Monkey family! Super news!

Ciancianese · 08/02/2020 00:02

Well done Monkey2001 DS! I was at St Andrews many years ago, wonderful experience. Well done to ladsmum DS too. Your tenacity and determination is an inspiration to us. I am a lurker (sorry) my DD had 2 offers last year and missed one by one point (IB). She has an interview coming up for UEA, and hopefully Aberdeen for Gateway courses, a seriously stressful time.

PiggyPokkyFool · 08/02/2020 18:09

Well done Junior Monkey - a thoroughly deserved place.
I have been quiet as DD is still waiting for news. I am of the opinion that until she hears otherwise she is still in the game but I can see it is really getting to her as two of her Unis have offered some places already and she has heard nothing.
Trying to keep her focused on A levels but I can see the waiting is grinding her down somewhat.

ladsmum · 08/02/2020 23:58

Whoop whoop Mini Monkey 🐵 Amazing news

Monkey2001 · 09/02/2020 09:24

@PiggyPokkyFool the waiting is terrible, but of course you are right that just because the offers have started she should not get disheartened. It is great to get early interviews, but it makes the wait for decisions all the more painful. But it won't be long now.

Thanks all for the lovely comments.

Piggy we are the same, still waiting, although I think it is will be March before Dundee & Aberdeen make offers. It’s a tough spell for them all.
Monkey big congrats to your boy, I’m so pleased for him.

242Mummy · 09/02/2020 11:44

I'm in the waiting room, too. So stressful!

alreadytaken · 09/02/2020 14:46

congratulations to the young monkey and to everyone else with offers. The medical schools will still be making a lot of offers in March and probably a few even in August. These days even if they get 4 rejections they may find places open up in August if they phone around.

ladsmum · 10/02/2020 19:12

Reserve list for ARU - DS not too surprised says it was his worst interview. Not sure what to do tho’. Looks like lots of offers were made to reserves last year. Should he join the list to keep options open or bow out gracefully and give a chance to someone else? He’s still got everything crossed for Sheffield next week so might be clearer then.

scared2020 · 10/02/2020 19:25

Which is ARU sorry

ladsmum · 10/02/2020 19:42

Anglia Rushkin - campus for medicine is at Chelmsford. Miles away from us in Co Durham!

speedyhedgehog · 10/02/2020 20:34

I hope he gets Sheffield next week 🤞 but if he has to join the list before he would hear from Sheffield then I would have him join the list. It will only be for a week or so hopefully but I wouldn't let go of the opportunity at ARU yet since it might well end up being an offer? Really hope he gets his favourite though 🤞

Monkey2001 · 10/02/2020 20:44

I agree with Speedy. If one of the others work out he will come off the waiting list and everybody will shuffle up. I know someone who got into Exeter from the reserve list and became a member of the GMC a few weeks ago.

Congrats to him on getting on the reserve list. Does he prefer ARU to Sunderland? Are they all similar grade requirements?

Should know about Sheffield by this time next week - website says they are notifying by Track this year, I think it was e-mails from sheffield last year.

OP posts:
ladsmum · 11/02/2020 10:38

@Monkey2001 Sheffield last year was Track update first email later. Updated just after 6pm each day (offers over a few days). Is mini monkey set on St Andrew’s or is he keen on Sheffield too? We are away next week - DS1 is home alone so slightly apprehensive Confused

Monkey2001 · 11/02/2020 11:56

@ladsmum maybe it was different for us last year because he did not get an offer so he had the e-mail a couple of days later than successful applicants offering Biomed or Orthoptics.

He was set on St Andrew's but is now saying there is a small chance that he might want to go to Sheffield if he gets an offer as most of his friendship group are going there and he is worried about the limited social life in St Andrews and how expensive it is - the catered, shared bathroom halls are not too bad at £7k, but allocation of accommodation is fairly random - having an unconditional offer makes no difference and the en-suite halls are extortionate (highest £9,681!). Visiting friends will eat up a big chunk of any remaining funds and he does not think his friends will go all the way to St Andrews to visit him. He is hugely grateful to have an offer, but if he gets the Sheffield offer, the choice is not as straight forward as he first thought. It should be an easier choice if he gets a choral scholarship.

No complaints though, he will be studying medicine next year!

Must be tough on you to leave your DS home alone to get such significant news. I hope he is reasonably optimistic as he was successful last year.

Awaiting Sheffield here too. However has offers few newcastle and manchester so either way he is in (assuming he achieves the grades)

MedSchoolRat · 11/02/2020 20:29

(I am a saddo who likes to count things)
Looks like Newcastle is the 'MN mum of medic' place this year.
Either folk aren't reporting rejections or there are a lot of maybes still out there.
Most of DD's peers applying for medicine also have at least one offer... Just one lad has definitely no offers & another still in purgatory.
