Meant to say, this amended offer came through a few weeks after the standard offer which followed the interview.

zzzzzzzx · 10/02/2020 21:00

DD was wondering about the past papers because she struggles to find enough, though she isn’t doing Physics. I know Birmingham can give out attainment offers of CCC for sons subjects (my friend’s DD got one for history) but they don’t give them for Psychology. I had also read that a few people had a second reduced offer once all the applications have been received but hadn’t taken much notice of it.

TheDrsDocMartens · 11/02/2020 09:29

Interviews for languages at some places. Dd1 didn’t get any interviews but dd2 has one interview and expecting one other.

MillicentMartha · 11/02/2020 09:47

@zzzzzzzx We're at Nottingham on Wednesday as well! But for maths so probably wouldn't bump into you. Should we wear a red carnation/a mumsnet scarf/carry a copy of the Guardian/just in case? Wink

I’ll be the short middle aged blonde woman wearing mostly clothes from Next! I aim to blend in in life.

MillicentMartha · 11/02/2020 10:14

I'm the dumpy, middle aged, prematurely Wink white haired woman wearing mostly TU from Sainsbury's!

Email from Dds school today about Synoptic Assessments.. Not sure what these tests are? Dd will not be amused given they start the day after her 18th and 1 day before they should normally return back to school after Easter.

MillicentMartha · 11/02/2020 17:32

Just googling them, they appear to be tests combining more than one topic. Advantages are seeing the bigger picture, recognising And understanding similarities and connections between topics. Have never heard of them, maybe they’re a new fad?

Spoke to DD and she seems to think that they will be doing a 2.5 hour "similar to paper 3" in all three subjects... She's now worried parents will not let their DC go to her party on the Saturday... They were not supposed to be in school till the Tuesday...I said it's just a Saturday night and I'm sure they will be OK.. .

oneteen · 11/02/2020 18:36

That should read 2.5 hour exam paper..

Dearover · 11/02/2020 19:12

Synoptics tend to be case study type exams. They are often used as the end point assessment for apprenticeship schemes as they combine questions about the knowledge you hold in each topic around one scenario.

StegosaurusRex · 12/02/2020 08:33

Some awarding bodies have question banks and past papers on their websites. AQA and WJEC definitely do. I'm not sure about others, though, sorry

JufusMum · 12/02/2020 09:44

DD is taking her second driving test today. I feel sick!
She’s off to applicant holder days at USW and Wrexham Glyndwr in a couple of weeks.
She’s still saying she likes Carlisle but it’s so far!
Am hoping she will love the day at Wrexham as it ticks all boxes for us.

MillicentMartha · 12/02/2020 13:15

Good luck Jufus junior!

Good luck jufusmum DD - hoped she passes her test.

EachandEveryone · 12/02/2020 17:53

My DN has had three offers and is just waiting to hear from UAL. Leeds have sent her a personal postcard today, which is confusing her even more. Is that normal? We are newbies at this.

MillicentMartha · 12/02/2020 18:55

Yes, DS got a postcard from Southampton and a Christmas card from Brum.

EachandEveryone · 12/02/2020 18:57

Its a nice touch.

ChiaraRimini · 12/02/2020 22:04

Wow at the unis sending individual letters and postcards.
DS2 has 3 offers of AAB for politics at Leeds, Mcr and Nottm- no personal touch just get your head down boy and get the grades!

EachandEveryone · 12/02/2020 22:11

Well, thats the thing isnt it? Shes been offered art foundation BB, art BC or 120 UCAS points for Leeds Arts Uni (the ones that sent her a note). She has a lot of work to get through. Art isn't the soft option some people think plus the A levels on top, the fine art courses are half academic as well they sound quite full on.

hairquestions2019 · 12/02/2020 22:22

Is that the offer for the fine art degree course or for the foundation course eachandeveryone? The asterisks seem to make things go a bit haywire on mn, but has your dd been asked for distinction at foundation, plus BB at A level? Is she doing foundation plus A levels - that must be quite a workload?
Yes, art A level is quite renowned for being a lot of work, I think - that's certainly my impression! Hope your dd is enjoying it though.

oneteen · 12/02/2020 22:24

I'm not impressed with the "nice touches" because I think they are a waste of money that could be used to reduce fees. My DD had someone (Chem student) ring her up from one Uni on Monday - very persistent - rang home twice and her mobile - obviously getting paid to make the calls. DD said he sounded like he was going through the motions and very nervous - great that the students can earn money but totally not necessary.

EachandEveryone · 12/02/2020 22:44

It confuses me as well. Like I said its new to us as well! So Art is an extended Diploma and all four unis want a distinction which she is on her way to. Then on top of this Loughborough want B,B, Newcastle B,C, Leeds Uni B,C and Leeds Arts Uni 120 UCAs points. She is waiting to here if UAL but we are being cautious as its really difficult to get into. Its a four year course for all of them. To be honest, shes liked them all and it was very sweet the note the tutor sent saying what pieces of work he particularly liked.

EachandEveryone · 12/02/2020 22:45

Hear not here!

Ironoaks · 13/02/2020 20:57

DS has finished his mocks.
Time for a bit of R&R over half term.

The university application side of things is in a quiet phase. He has chosen his firm and insurance. He doesn't have any more uni-admin to do yet. The next tasks will be the student finance application and then accommodation preferences.
