Gap years are only ill-advised for maths degrees because of the fear that you either use it or lose it. They adopt the same approach to A level maths, so if you take the A level in year 12 you are expected to take FM in year 13. There doesn't seem to be an issue with any other subject and some economics degrees don't even insist on A level maths.

wineoclockthanks · 26/01/2020 10:27

Phew, DS has had an offer from Loughborough which is 1 grade less than his others so will be his likely insurance choice.
We're going to Exeter on 29th Feb, anyone else going that day?

Snozzlemaid · 26/01/2020 10:29

errorofjudgement dd has applied for Medical sciences.

errorofjudgement · 26/01/2020 11:42

Snozzle oh, we probably will be in different areas then! I wonder how many subjects are covered on the day, and how personalised it is. When DS went to a post offers day at Warwick it was very focussed on the engineering department, (his subject), with a full programme for the day. I hope Exeter is the same.

SirB0bby · 26/01/2020 13:16

My DS is definitely going to Cardiff after a rollercoaster of not getting the grades last year for his first choice, accepting his insurance option, deferring it, then deciding out of the blue he wanted to go to Cardiff instead. He has a place but only had a brief visit last November. We will go to the offer holders day mainly to have a proper look at the accommodation but he is happy for us to go with him.

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/01/2020 15:29

Dd2 going to offers day in Edinburgh. She’s going to the day alone but we are all going to Edinburgh and having a few days there

Kimlek · 26/01/2020 20:49

Thanks @Dearover - the economics degrees of interest are maths focused and most want an A grade in maths A level. So tricky to know if a gap year is a good idea or not.

oneteen · 27/01/2020 08:49

So how is everyone's DC doing ...do they know which Unis will be the firm/insurance. DD is almost certain to choose UEA as her insurance because she has an ABC offer...Bham or Warwick will be her firm at AAB.

Snozzlemaid · 27/01/2020 09:52

Dd is pretty sure she's going for Exeter for her firm offer of ABC (or if she gets AAB she'll get a scholarship of £1500) and Reading as insurance with offer of BBC.

mimbleandlittlemy · 27/01/2020 11:08

Everyone I know has a child waiting on at least one uni still with Durham, Warwick, Bristol and Edinburgh being the worst offenders so no one I know has yet firmed.

mushroom3 · 27/01/2020 11:12

Ucasmistake I think DC1 needs to chase. It may be just that they have picked a bunch of late replying one eg Durham, Edinburgh and St Andrews tend to be late. UCAS can make mistakes, I know that from experience, in my case they sent the wrong A level grades to my Uni's so I ended up in clearing, and it was only when my clearing Uni checked my grades (they also got sent the wrong grades) that I found out! My DD applied just before Xmas and has now got 5 offers so nearly 2 months with no responses sounds very slow.

mushroom3 · 27/01/2020 11:15

Sorry, I thought I was looking at the last page of the thread, but I was looking at the first page! I think UCASmistake's DC1 may have heard by now!

Lightuptheroom · 27/01/2020 11:15

Firm is likely to be York, sitting the exams for Aberystwyth merit/scholarship tomorrow which can lead to unconditional + some funding

Oratory1 · 27/01/2020 11:48

DS pressed the button at the weekend!! Firmed Birmingham and insured Nottingham for CS. After the Birmingham offer day he decided he definitely preferred brum over Warwick and if he gets a Warwick offer it will be at the same grades so he has withdrawn from Warwick and made his choice. Was able to apply for accommodation too which was very exciting.

There is no rush and school advise waiting until nearer the deadline but he wanted to get it done.

Oratory1 · 27/01/2020 11:51

If he doesn’t get the grades for his firm (a very scary A*AA) he will probably take a gap year and either retake or think again - which I would have no problem with as long as he works for at least some of it to finance himself.

Hoghgyni · 27/01/2020 11:56

Offer holders day in Edinburgh? DD would just like to get AN offer from Edinburgh. She's got no idea what the university is like, hadn't realised initially that it was for 4 years, but she loves the city and has family near by (well 3 hours away!)

MillicentMartha · 27/01/2020 14:45

DS hasn’t/can’t decide. Trying to get him to make a decision is blood from stone territory. His last offer holder day he’s booked for March! Grr.

TheDrsDocMartens · 27/01/2020 15:19

Manchester Met and Heriot Watt still haven’t replied though

MarchingFrogs · 27/01/2020 15:37

DS hasn’t/can’t decide.

He's got just over 3 months yet to formalise his decision; if none leaps out and grabs him more than the others do at this stage, all the more reason not to rush into it.

Wintersnowdrop · 27/01/2020 15:38

My dd is still waiting to hear from Edinburgh. She’s had offers from Durham, Lancaster, Bristol and Exeter.

aibutohavethisusername · 27/01/2020 17:02

DD is waiting for the offer holder days. I think she will firm Exeter.

mumonthehill · 27/01/2020 17:15

Late to join but have been reading avidly! After a tricky couple of years DS pressed the button on an unconditional offer from Nottingham Trent. He had offers from Bath, Cardiff and withdrew from Manchester. I am now a very relieved mum!!!

specialted · 27/01/2020 17:16

Ds waiting to hear outcome of Lancaster interview then will make a decision. Birmingham and nottingham in the mix

suze28 · 27/01/2020 17:28

It's all starting to fall into place with some great updates.

oneteen · 27/01/2020 18:35

@suze28 - It is exciting seeing everyone's updates.

Well done to everyone who has pressed the buttons... @Oratory1 It would be odd if our DC are at the same UNi after all those months we spent on the GCSE thread - Bham is definitely high on DD's list still. What accommodation has your DS chosen - I was talking to my niece about Bham accommodation yesterday.
