Are any parents accompanying their DC to offer holder days? I’m going to Exeter with DD But I’ve not been to any of the visits so far. She is off to York on her own in half term, stating there for the night too. In a Premier Inn.

FabTab · 25/01/2020 17:12

Yay @StegosaurusRex

oneteen · 25/01/2020 17:21

I'm taking DD to the Bham offer holders day - we didn't visit Bham during the Open days ...It looks like there is a mixture of activities planned with and without parents...so looking forward to finding a coffee shop :-).

DD hasn't mentioned York although she does have an offer...I think DF will be taking her to UEA.

I'm just chilled that mocks are out the way and results were better than DD expected.

Newgirls · 25/01/2020 17:47

My dd going to offer days on her own and is excited about the trains etc. I would have liked to go and not go in the uni but she wants to do it herself 😭

Snozzlemaid · 25/01/2020 17:51

I'm going to Exeter applicant day with my dd too aibu.

aibutohavethisusername · 25/01/2020 18:48

We are going on March 21st Snozzelmaid. Is that the same day?

MarchingFrogs · 25/01/2020 19:26

@oneteen, if you haven't been to the University of Birmingham before, I can recommend trying to make time to visit the Barber Institute of Arts and the Lapworth Museum of Geology (both on campus). Also Winterbourne House and Gardens (just the other side of Edgbaston Park Road, a few minutes' walk from the Barber) if you have a bit more time.

There are several places to get coffee; there's a Costa in the Bramall (and others) and a Starbucks in the bottom of the Muirhead Tower.

tudorbuff · 25/01/2020 19:37

Snozzlemaid, Aibu, I am going to Exeter with my DS that day too!

oneteen · 25/01/2020 20:05

Thanks, @marchingfrogs...I literally used to work about 5 minutes away on the Hagley Road (30 years ago)...but have not been to the Campus or surrounding area.

KingscoteStaff · 25/01/2020 21:17

DS going to Bristol and Manchester on his own - we can’t take time off - but we will go through things he needs to see / ask beforehand.

mimbleandlittlemy · 25/01/2020 22:32

ds doing all offer holder days on his own - which is fine by me. I went to the Newcastle , Warwick and Birmingham open days but he did Manchester on his own so that would be the only one I have never seen of his three likely ones.

He came home tired but buzzy from today’s offer holder day. The idea of light at the end of the school tunnel I think. Having a bit of a grim time friendship group wise the last term and this so he is looking forward to new people, new places.

Snozzlemaid · 25/01/2020 23:22

We're going to Exeter on Feb 22nd so not the same day unfortunately.

errorofjudgement · 25/01/2020 23:37

@Snozzlemaid - that’s the day we’re visiting too. Smile

Snozzlemaid · 25/01/2020 23:38

What subject error?

Ironoaks · 25/01/2020 23:49

DS has pressed the required buttons on UCAS to choose his firm and insurance offers.

Now he just needs to get the grades...

Peridot1 · 25/01/2020 23:53

Can I ask a question of you knowledgeable people please?

Have never been through this before.

DS is currently on a gap year (which seems to involve hanging around the house like a bad smell rather than anything exciting currently).

Anyway. He didn’t apply last year and his grades were lower than he’d hoped. He has just put in his UCAS app with five choices with his grades. He hasn’t heard back I don’t think. Is that normal? Do they just make offers for current A level students?

Was encouraged to read up the thread slightly that York has clearing places for business management as that is is top choice but he hasn’t got the grades. His grades are BBC. Other choices are Royal Holloway, Surrey, Herriot Watt and Oxford Brooks. It’s like getting blood from a stone trying to get any info from him!

Peridot1 · 25/01/2020 23:55

When I say just put in application I do mean before the 15 Jan deadline btw.

FabTab · 26/01/2020 00:05

@Peridot1 DS took three A levels last year and is doing another one this year so not quite the same as your DS. He has two offers and one interview so far.

Peridot1 · 26/01/2020 00:11

Thanks FabTab. Trying to figure out if I should be worrying.

He had a tough few years with daily migraines and missed a lot of school. Did GCSEs at home after six months not at school. Probably (definitely) didn’t put in as much effort as he could.

Did ok considering but obv could have done much better.

FabTab · 26/01/2020 00:30

@Peridot1 I’m sorry to hear your DS has had a tough time. I hope it all works out well for him. Before applying, DS and I separately rang each of the unis and asked how they would look at his application. All five he applied to said they would encourage him to apply. I know it’s too late for you to do that now but you could call and see what they say.

Kimlek · 26/01/2020 07:51

Someone mentioned up thread that a gap year is not recommended for maths degrees; what about economics? Does anyone know if that’d be an issue too please?

LIZS · 26/01/2020 08:04

Dd applied with grades in hand and had 4 offer pre Christmas and one last week after interview, similar to how it went last year. So would suggest any delay in receiving responses is due to the volume of last minute applications. She is using the gap year to find volunteering and work experience in fields related to her degree or interests. Now applying for summer jobs - does anyone have suggestions where to look?

errorofjudgement · 26/01/2020 08:17

Snozzle - History at Exeter. and yours?

Peridot - my DD is also on a gap year and applying with her grades. She has heard for one and is waiting on the other, though it’s a uni and a course that’s known to be very slow in making their offers (it’s also a bit of a stretch so might ultimately be a rejection)
As others have said there will be a lot of students still waiting to hear as the unis start working through the applications. Has your DS included a couple of unis where he meets the expected grades?

Peridot1 · 26/01/2020 09:11

@errorofjudgement - yes he has. York is a stretch I know. Hopefully it is just volume of applications. His went in the Friday before the deadline.

Just have to wait and see I suppose.

@LIZS DS looked online in our local area and ended up working at a high street clothing shop over Xmas. I think he just googled ‘jobs in X’. Usual bars and restaurants were looking.

errorofjudgement · 26/01/2020 09:33

Peridot I’m sure he will hear soon Smile
