Yes, high rated electrical items aren’t usually allowed in students’ rooms. I’m a bit gobsmacked at the concept of having your own tabletop oven. What’s wrong with using the one in the kitchen? I can see the point of a fridge, but they’re not allowed either. You can get lockable fridge cages if you’re worried about food being stolen.

@SisterAgathaVanHelsing
If he already knows what his firm and insurance choices will be then not much to be gained from attending an offer-holder day. Unless he didn't get a chance to attend the open day.

Ironoaks · 17/01/2020 17:38

HugoSpritz
There's a systema microwave mug in DS's "bottom drawer" too!

thesunwillout · 17/01/2020 19:23

Apparently Cardiff offer holders day is much the same as normal open day
Looking at accomodation only happens at normal open day which is in Easter hols, which is handy as it's hols.

ChiaraRimini · 17/01/2020 21:55

DS submitted his application on Wednesday and has just received his first offer -AAB for politics at Manchester (their standard offer). TBH with that turnaround I can't believe they've even read his personal statement- do they just dish out offers based on predicted grades??

isittimetogotobed · 17/01/2020 22:21

My Dd has had offers from 4 Uni's and is still waiting to hear from the last one.
She was surprised to find a lovely personalised letter from a lecturer at her preferred choice discussing her personal statement and their shared interest in a particular artist, offering some reading considerations as well. Is this usual? It seems like a really nice touch!

aibutohavethisusername · 17/01/2020 22:53

isittimetogotobed That’s brilliant, not heard of that before now, no.

My nephew had a similar letter a couple of years ago, from the uni's chemistry dept. Remember thinking at the time what a nice touch it was.

StegosaurusRex · 18/01/2020 10:13

My friend had a hand written letter about his PS yesterday from a uni which had offered him a very reduced offer. Unfortunately it's not a uni he wants to go to and us just a back up as the actual course he wants is only available at a few unis. It's a really lovely thing to take the time to do

Lightuptheroom · 18/01/2020 10:32

Ds had a similar letter yesterday, York seem to be doing a lot of this

Lightuptheroom · 18/01/2020 10:33

Not a reduced offer, about his PS and what the course leads to and the interests of the lecturers

Ironoaks · 18/01/2020 10:47

DS received a personalised letter from Birmingham. It mentioned some of the academic interests he had written about in his personal statement and highlighted how their course could help him pursue these interests further.

The letter also mentioned the instrument he plays and offered him a music scholarship (if he firms the offer) where they provide free instrumental lessons (worth about £3K over the duration of the course), which is a nice incentive.

HugoSpritz yep oven entirely pointless but she's excited and I'm not going to pee on her bonfire. She's remembering my hall of residence in the late 80's which was a bit basic. My portable mini oven was the only thing we had apart from the gas rings.

SoundofSilence · 18/01/2020 12:11

Standard offer received from Southampton. 2 to go.

Dearover · 18/01/2020 13:00

Soundofsilence Is your DS likely to have to turn his room out in halls at the end of each term? My DD will effectively be taking enough stuff for an extended holiday each term, as she will only be allowed to keep a box with bedding in. If she can't carry it by train, it can't go, so baking equipment would be way down the bottom of the list.

Dearover · 18/01/2020 13:01

Oops, DD not DS.

MillicentMartha · 18/01/2020 17:38

That’s kind of sweet, sound!

DS had a personalised letter from Birmingham as well. It impressed me, him not so much! We went there today for an offer holder’s day. It was lovely and sunny. Again, I really liked it but DS is noncommittal.

Millicent I love Birmingham too and ds also less in favour. Think we're going to offer holder day in February, just before the nottingham one. Lancaster next Saturday , then he'll have to make some decisions!

Serin · 18/01/2020 18:06

DD had a personalised letter from a professor at Aberystwth, a few years ago, she didnt go there but kept the letter as it was such a lovely thing to get. They also offered her a £1k per annum scholarship.

thesunwillout · 18/01/2020 19:02

Random, or perhaps not.
Anyone's DD or DS suddenly uttered the words gap year.
Anyone's previous uni applicants DC changed the game!?

TheDrsDocMartens · 18/01/2020 19:48

@Notsureabouthis Arabic

MillicentMartha · 18/01/2020 20:02

Not recommended for maths, (luckily.) Wink

My friend’s DS took a surprise gap year after A levels. He both changed his degree choice from politics to broadcast and media studies and deferred. He did a year as a drama and music technician apprentice in his gap year, did his first year at uni, then dropped out as it wasn’t for him. I think his parents were a bit pissed off with him!
