DD has had an offer holders day come through for Bham...assume parents (a parent) can go along too?

MarchingFrogs · 03/12/2019 09:47

Offer from UCL in meantime, do they do applicant days?

From the UCL website:

Applicant open days and selection events

If you’re a UK-based applicant, you may be invited to attend an applicant open day and/or selection event. We want to meet you, get to know you better and give you a feel for what UCL is like as an institution and what it might be like studying here. If you live overseas, or would have a difficult journey to get to UCL, you would usually be exempt from an interview or compulsory open day (except in the case of Medicine applicants). All the same, we strongly encourage you to visit UCL before making a decision on which universities to apply to.

www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/undergraduate-offer-holders/your-offer-what-happens-next/step-1-open-days-and-campus-tours

Re Birmingham, as with everywhere else where DS1 and DD held offers, they ask whether the applicant wants to bring (one or two) guests. There are other things to do on site (the Barber Institute gallery and the Museum of Geology), so you may not want to go to all the 'parent' things. Although we did get a free lunch on DD's applicant day, as it was a full day, not just a.m. as DS1's was.

JufusMum · 03/12/2019 09:57

Haven't been on here for AGES! But here we are applying for Uni. We have visited ten (urgghhh) yes ten Uni's and DD now has a shortlist of five. Applications start soon!

Ironoaks · 03/12/2019 10:52

JufusMum
You've been to ten open days?! That's quite the tour.

JufusMum · 03/12/2019 10:56

Ironoaks - DD is bit a obsessive and wanted to be REALLY sure.
We have even been to top choice twice!

BeardedMum · 03/12/2019 11:04

Has anyone else’s DDs and DSs received offers where you need lower grades if you put the university as your preference? DD has received an offer from Exeter of AAA, but AAB if she put them as first choice. She is predicted AAB but Exeter is not her first choice. She has only received from Exeter so far.

ClerkMaxwell · 03/12/2019 11:10

DD has had an offer from Edinburgh (economics). She was surprised as school said they are usually Feb/March for Scottish applicants but from other threads I see that lots of Scottish applicants have had early offers.

oneteen · 03/12/2019 11:12

Thanks, @MarchingFrogs - Bham has stated you can take one parent.

I have some work to do in Bham so we will probably go up with DD the night before ...I used work 5 minutes from the Uni so it will take me back to my misspent youth in many of the pubs and clubs.

Ironoaks · 03/12/2019 12:18

DS has received offers with other incentives if you put them as firm choice (£1K if you get at least those grades, free music lessons etc) but no one is budging on the grade requirements. He has received three offers and all three are A*AA.

MillicentMartha · 03/12/2019 12:21

oneteen I'm going with DS3 to Brum in January on a Saturday. I haven't seen it on an open day as DS's father took him, but I've been there with school a few times.

BeardedMum others have had reduced offers if firmed as well. Annoying if they aren't your favourite but a potential insurance.

oneteen · 03/12/2019 12:55

@MillicentMartha - DD indicated that offer holders day was 29th but I may have heard incorrectly - although she did state she was booking a day off school (she was at DF's over the weekend/yesterday -so limited to info from WhatsApp messages). I suppose there could be several offer holder days.

No reduced offers for DD either - would be nice to get one from Warwick!

MillicentMartha · 03/12/2019 13:09

There were a few to choose from for maths, oneteen, some on a weekday but at least one on a Saturday.

Hoghgyni · 03/12/2019 13:47

Is an offer holder's day just a glorified open day? DD has been invited to 2 hundreds of miles away & I'm not sure how she would benefit. She has a fairly clear cut decision to make in January depending on her Oxford outcome.

MillicentMartha · 03/12/2019 14:26

Exactly that, just subject specific so much less people around and probably more students. My DS1 found them useful to make his decision between the two top choices of insurance university, he only went to those two.

DS3 just can't make up his mind, he likes them all...

I think DD will go to all the offer holder days because she's changed course since we went to any open days and it's a good opportunity to have a better look at accommodation...she hasn't been to Bham yet either... The Bham date falls nicely after mocks too.

mimbleandlittlemy · 03/12/2019 16:37

BeardedMum - my DS has received an ABB offer from Newcastle, dropping to BBB if he makes it his firm. Given that the course is very highly rated at Newcastle for his subjects, he is seriously tempted but won't decide until his Manchester interview which isn't until end of January and the offer holder day for Birmingham (which he hasn't been notified of yet).

Still nothing from Warwick which is the only uni that's yet to do anything. DS is deffering - so I don't know whether they don't bother to get around to those until later. Anyone know anything about Warwick and Mod. Languages?

RedPT · 03/12/2019 20:27

DD is predicted ABB (A in Criminology), she's just got an offer for Cardiff to do Criminology for ABD (D in Criminology). Which I think sounds great, but she's worried that if she gets her predicted they won't let her in as she will get BB not AB in her other two subjects. Anybody know how these things usually work?

WhichUni2020 · 04/12/2019 11:11

Are parents supposed to/ expected go along to offer days? My dd has a few offer holder days coming up - it didn’t occur to me to go with her as I will be at work. She’s gone to her first one today.

oneteen · 04/12/2019 11:42

@whichUni2020 - I think it depends on the DC/parents, some of the offer holder days can inc overnight stay so parents would probably not go.

I'm going to DD to Bham because we will probably aim to meet up with my niece for supper and I can also tie in some work too. I think DD's DF will go with her to UEA because he loves Norwich and transport is not easy and not keen on DD driving so far in the winter.

oneteen · 04/12/2019 11:42

That should read I am going with DD...

ifonly4 · 04/12/2019 11:58

Just wanted to say sit tight waiting for those offers. DD had to wait Edinburgh - 3 weeks, St Andrews - 10 weeks (many of her friends were jeolous as they had to wait about 18 weeks), Birmingham - 12 weeks, Warwick 3.5 months and Durham 4.5 months. She half knew she wouldn't put Durham as her firm, but still wanted to hear before making that final decision.

She was disappointed to end up at her insurance, Edinburgh, a long long way from home. Parts of her course are hard, but she loves the location and has made lots of new friends, with others who she occasionally sees, and is glad she didn't go to her firm.

MillicentMartha · 04/12/2019 12:10

I'm going with DS to Birmingham as I didn't go to the open day and would like to see it. He's going on his own to Manchester tomorrow for his interview as it's on a week day. Not sure about other offer holder days. If they are on a weekend I may take him as it'll be cheaper than the train fare!

aibutohavethisusername · 04/12/2019 12:30

DD is going on her own to York offer holder day which is going to have to include an overnight in February half term.
I may go with her to Exeter in March.

MillicentMartha · 04/12/2019 18:48

Where will she stay, aibu? Is she 18 yet?

OP posts:
oneteen · 04/12/2019 18:56

You can actually book and stay at a Travelodge when you are 16 and also get a student discount ...worth knowing...
