Seems to be the exact opposite here with Warwick, Hoghgyni. All the Humanities kids at ds's school are waiting to hear while all the Maths and Engineering kids have offers in! Perhaps they do it by postcode to torture people.

MillicentMartha · 12/11/2019 12:35

I know of quite a few Warwick STEM offers.

Thanks Minstrel. It’s Surrey on Saturday, glad to hear your DC is enjoying it.

FabTab · 12/11/2019 18:31

For those of you with DC applying for maths are they applying for four year or three year courses. If your DC doesn’t know which they want is it better to apply for 4 or 3?

MillicentMartha · 12/11/2019 19:12

My DS is applying for a 3 year course as he wants to do a PGCE afterwards rather than an MMath. In most cases you can apply for the BSc and transfer to the MMath if you are getting at least a 2:1 in second year. If you apply for the MMath you can transfer to the BSc if you change your mind, or may be asked to transfer if you aren’t achieving week enough.

So it’s up to you, really. With an integrated masters the funding is the same as for a BSc which is helpful.

*well enough.

Thanks Millicent
DS is applying without the help of a school so we’re floundering on even basic questions.

MillicentMartha · 12/11/2019 20:12

Has your DS been to any open days? That’s where I’ve got my information from.

Only one but he wasn’t very keen on the talks and preferred to just wander around.

Pepermintea · 12/11/2019 21:37

My DS is applying for MMath because it delays getting a job for an extra year! I think there is a lot of flexibility to swap though and you almost have to be accepted for the fourth year by doing well in exams at the uni even if that's what you have applied for.

oneteen · 12/11/2019 21:56

Not Maths but I think it's better to apply for an integrated Masters then you can change your mind after Yr1 but if you decide to go the 4 yrs funding is in place..

MillicentMartha · 13/11/2019 12:08

oneteen for maths it's easy to transfer during the course without affecting funding. You just inform SLC at the time. It's not like doing a separate masters, it's still an integrated MMath.

De-lurking Smile DS applying for MChem, holding offers from York, Warwick, Durham and Nottingham. Loves all of them so very fortunate position, just glad all that trolling up and down for open days has ended for a few months ... before start all over again with DD, visiting the ones she didn't visit with DS.
Good luck to all DC's hope they get the offers they want, then heads down for the final push to the exams.

MillicentMartha · 13/11/2019 13:25

That's a good set of offers, biscuit. Does he have a favourite out of those? Is Durham as high ranking for sciences as it is for arts/humanities?

Just got the Birmingham offer in that ds has been waiting for and he is slightly disappointed as he has got their standard ABB offer - he was hoping they might lower to BBB as they are known to on his potential course. Now just got Warwick and Manchester to go and then he can make some decisions but the Newcastle BBB if taken as Firm is looking increasingly attractive.

ClerkMaxwell · 13/11/2019 13:41

De-lurking also as DD has finally submitted her application for economics. She's only applied to 3 because she's pretty sure of an unconditional from Glasgow based on her Scottish Highers. Also applied for Edinburgh and StA but chances of an offer are only about 20% and 11% respectively. At least if she gets an offer it will likely be unconditional. Just as well she would be happy with any of her choices.

whoatethelastbiscuit · 13/11/2019 13:58

Hi Millicent, I think Durham is his favourite, it ranks highly for science and DS really loved the department and atmosphere - and that has been key to all choices. We went to loads of open days and some which looked good on paper just didn't feel right so he went with his gut feeling, he prefers quieter places generally so all the lively city unis were ruled out straight away. He is planning on going to post-offer days to make final decision. All beginning to feel very real for him now.
Good to hear more forms going in and offers coming through.

Sostenueto · 13/11/2019 18:45

Dgd has offer for an integrated MSc in Cognitive neuroscience and psychology at University of Manchester.

MillicentMartha · 13/11/2019 18:45

DS got an offer holder day invitation from Brum today. They’d obviously read his PS as they mentioned it and things he’d written in it in their letter, together with some relevant information about how their course could meet some of his specific interests in terms of career etc. I was quite impressed.

Yay, Sost! Has it been confirmed on UCAS yet?

Congratulations on all the lovely offers!

Hoghgyni · 13/11/2019 20:15

Sost excellent news.

Tranquilitybaby · 14/11/2019 06:47

I’m not sure about clearing MillicentMartha, it’s something I’ll have to look into. Her top three choices are Royal Holloway, Sussex and UEA.

FluffytheGoldfish · 14/11/2019 07:34

ClerkMaxwell also delurking and also a DD who has the required Highers. Dd2 sent her form off last Tuesday, checked her spam folder on Wednesday morning and had an acknowledgement from Glasgow at 5am and an unconditional by 5pm! She is applying for MSci in physics and astrophysics and her friend had a conditional offer in the same knid of time frame. So make sure she checks!
The only condition Dd2 has that they would prefer her to complete S6.
She also has an unconditional from Strathclyde which doesn't say any of this. Waiting for Edinburgh and St Andrews now but Glasgow is where she is set on.

oneteen · 14/11/2019 07:46

Well done on all the DC on their offers...

DD's application still sitting awaiting attachment of reference although it has been checked because the HOC asked which surname she wanted to go by (she goes by my surname at school, not her legal surname). I thought it odd that they would ask this given it would seem obvious that she would use her legal surname.
