Fluffy that was quick. I will tell her to check tonight. We know someone who has just graduated from Glasgow with the degree your DD has applied for. She loved it and has gone straight into a fully funded PhD at Strathclyde.

DD going to Glasgow would save me a fortune but I think DD would like to escape her brothers who are still at home.

Slightly envious of you Scottish posters with your unconditional offers on the highers. Are S6 exams called advanced highers? Does taking them make you a more attractive prospect for the universities?

It certainly makes it easier for applications if you have good set of Highers in S5. Yes, S6 exams are called Advanced Highers. Some subjects (medicine, phamacy etc) require you to have AHs and others recommend it and some give you 2nd year entry with good AHs. It would be a bit odd to stay on to S6 and not take an AH in the subject you want to study at uni but a couple of my DSs friends have done this and found first year at uni a bit hard going. I suspect relevant AHs do make you a more attractive prospect but its not really clear to me how some unis select. Some like Glasgow are very clear.

FluffytheGoldfish · 14/11/2019 12:49

The problem with Advanced Highers is that not ever subject will run in a school. I think my school has 3 subjects running AH this year. Dd2's school is running about 5. We are in Glasgow and are lucky to have the Advanced Higher Hub at Glasgow Caledonian University. They offer AH in maths, chemistry, physics, English, business, history and modern studies. So Dd2 goes there for 2.5 hours after school on a Wednesday and Friday morning every week for physics (she is lucky that maths and chemistry are in school).
For other subjects pupils will go to a nearby school just for those lessons. And sometimes it just doesn't workout. Dd1 wanted to AH computing but nowhere near enough was running it.

It is also complicated by some universities counting them as additional qualifications and others ignoring them as double counting unless you are upgrading (B at AH =A at Higher etc). So some pupils who have an A at Higher in their degree subject are better off not doing it at AH so they can study a different subject at Higher which will be counted. This is most important for those who did not get top grades in Fifth year.

@HugoSpritz....Very true...although not holding my breath as to when DD's UCAS application will finally go...

LIZS · 14/11/2019 13:46

Dd has submitted her application today. Oddly, although she had to reinput all the data from scratch even though she is reapplying, the UCAS track is under her original number from last year.

ClerkMaxwell · 14/11/2019 13:58

DD lucky as her school is running 10 AHs this year and allows OU YASS and college courses. DSs went to a different school and it was variable year on year. DS2 left in S5 partly because in the previous year they hadn't run any of his subjects to AH.

Sostenueto · 14/11/2019 14:11

Not yet confirmed but I did ring yesterday and they confirmed offer and said will be on UCAS next week.

oneteen, same boat here, DD entered my card details the day before yesterday. I was under the impression that was it gone! No, now waiting for the references to be put on, expected grades and final check.

Good god let it be sent before the weekend.
DD is having some sort of adrenaline crash/ low (has mental health issues anyway)
She's gone to bed exhausted.
It's been alot, but I'm very proud of her.
Sociology mock next week.

Ironoaks · 14/11/2019 14:59

thesunwillout
DS had to wait two weeks for his school to approve the application and add the reference. Hopefully your DD's will be quicker.

oneteen · 14/11/2019 16:08

@thesunwillout Hope your DD's application goes quickly. Good luck to her with the mocks...

I'm not expecting DD's to go this week, apparently, all the girls have a meeting with HT where she reads through PS and Reference, etc, etc, etc...(seems to be lots of hands in the pot).

thesunwillout · 14/11/2019 19:40

@oneteen I hope that the head t, the checks, the details are sorted out quickly for your DD too.

Thanks

thesunwillout · 14/11/2019 21:08

@Ironoaks, blimey I hope so too. Though she has had regular input and talks with her tutor I feel it won't be too long now.
Good luck

LIZS · 15/11/2019 17:00

4 acknowledgements in 24 hours including an additional form for Edinburgh to establish funding stream.

MillicentMartha · 15/11/2019 18:13

LIZS great news! And hopefully u/c offers swiftly following suit. Though some places seem quite slow. I wonder if they’ll be any quicker making a decision with your DDs grades in hand?

DS's school submitted yesterday (after 2 weeks of nagging) and he had an offer today from Durham, AAB if firmed for Comp Sci.
Acknowledgements from the others.

oneteen · 15/11/2019 22:56

Well done to your DS Serin and your DD LIZS...

HugoSpritz He loved Durham but loves York even more Hmm. To complicate even further he has the option of a degree apprenticeship with a govt dept, paying 20k a year with no degree costs. The apprenticeship has pretty much guaranteed employment afterwards, but he wouldn't get the whole uni experience and would likely be living at home.
