Previous thread and hope you don't mind that I set up the next thread @juicy0. Just did it to ensure that we carry on chatting seamlessly Wink

Oh no @icanbewhatiwant. Happy Birthday! Hope the puppy's runny tummy gets better soon. You need a girl in your family soon to give you some TLC - have you meet DS1's girlfriend yet? Is she a keeper do you think? Sorry to hear about your jobs.

sluj · 20/03/2020 09:48

Happy birthday to you @icanbewhatiwant.
I would be hopping mad if my lot forgot my birthday but I am fully expecting Mothers Day to come and go without any recognition, same as last year. Boys are, quite frankly, useless at other people's occasions but happy to accept a fuss on their own.
Have you got plans for today? Why not get yourself a huge cake and eat it all yourself!
This is my first day out of self isolation and feeling much better. Both boys say they are coming home tomorrow for an undetermined length of time . No firm travel plans yet, I despair.

icanbewhatiwant · 20/03/2020 10:23

Thanks everyone. They didn't forget my birthday. Just can't be bothered. I have promised to remember on their birthdays!! We had a table booked last night for the first time in many years. But we cancelled it and had a take away. Though you have to hope the food is prepared by someone that isn't coming down with the virus.

@sluj have you had the virus? That's good you are out of quarantine. Not much fun being locked up. It's annoying they aren't testing. So many are going to quarantine themselves unnecessarily.

Itscoldouthere · 20/03/2020 10:32

@icanbewhatiwant Happy Birthday 🎂
Hope you have a good day, I’m sure they will remember and treat you later today.

Sorry to hear the pup is still unwell, hope she gets better soon.

Interesting to hear about other unis and some not charging for halls, I’m now wishing we’d fully moved out, I’m wondering if we should go back up and move everything out, if it sounds like there is a financial incentive to do so I’ll definately go back up there, we’re only 2 hours away so perfectly doable.

We were beginning to fear our house sale was falling through, but we heard last night that’s it’s still on, they can’t move it forward so we are proceeding as previously agreed, although I’m sure we won’t be able to move our furniture out just after Easter, but we just have to go with the flow.

Canada have shut the boarders till 30th June, so it looks like we will be here for a while.

I might call UEA to ask about accommodation, have they said they aren’t going back after Easter? Or are they still sitting on the fence?

sluj · 20/03/2020 10:43

Hi, yes I have had "something". This is day 7 of being stuck in the house, I have managed to work from home for 3 days this week but its been frustrating with overloaded work servers. Feeling better today but still very tired. I have alternated between being sure I have it to thinking its the flu. I think the DS need to self isolate when they come back tomorrow. Hope everyone is well. X

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/03/2020 10:56

You are just the type of person who should be tested for peace of mind if nothing else. I am sorry you are still feeling tired but hopefully that will pass, as long as you don't expect too much of yourself too quickly. If you have had COVID-19, you should be able to lead a more normal (whatever that is in our strange times!) life than those who haven't yet had it.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/03/2020 10:57

@Itscoldouthere good news on the house sale going ahead, less good that you are out of Canada until the beginning of July at the earliest...

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 20/03/2020 11:29

Yes @sluj it would be useful to know whether you've had it or not. Then you could go about as normal.

It was my birthday yesterday, not today. It was certainly a memorable one anyway. It'll be a memorable year won't it?

Ds said they were told they could use their rooms until mid June and study from there rather than home. So I guess that's their way of keeping payments by saying students can use rooms. Do let us know if you phone up @Itscoldouthere that's good about the sale.

I hope everyone is having better luck with their jobs than me. I only work part time and don't do anything particularly exciting. I only earn about £800 a month. But that's now stopped.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/03/2020 11:49

Sorry to hear about your job situation @icanbewhatiwant. That's not a nice birthday present! Sad

It's very much sitting on the fence saying they can use their rooms until mid-June (how every 'generous' of them seeing as they rather than the students will benefit from this arrangement).

OP posts:
sluj · 20/03/2020 11:56

I would love to know if I've had it so I can get out and be useful. I work in social housing and there are 5 blocks of sheltered housing in my team patch. Every scheme manager is off sick. There is so much I could do to reassure and help these residents, its frustrating.
I just drove to the sorting office post box to post a letter as my first foray out of isolation. I could have walked to the post box a third of a mile away but didn't think I could manage the hill on the way back. That's how tiring it is.
Anyway, we are all alive and kicking so there is a bright side, right??Smile

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/03/2020 12:34

You work in a key sector @sluj. Perhaps you should volunteer yourself for a test (with your GP by phone) as and when they become more available.

Sounds awful that you didn't think you could manage the hill to walk to the post box.... You will get there though.

Yes, I think we have to recalibrate our thinking at the moment and take pleasure from the things that are really important. Family and friends safe and well, a supply of loo roll, food in the cupboards...

I have this feeling that COVID-19 will revolutionise the way we all choose to live going forward - may be to lead us to simpler and more pared back lives.

OP posts:
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/03/2020 12:34

Obviously not the test by phone - sorry a badly worded sentence but hopefully you get my meaning.

OP posts:
Itscoldouthere · 20/03/2020 14:45

Hope you feel better soon @sluj

I agree to this changing things, my DH works for a global company who seem to fly places at the drop of a hat, he’s happily doing multi person video calls from the bedroom, he says he can’t believe this won’t change things forever, as it’s working really well. I do hope so.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/03/2020 16:58

Unless I've missed something no mention about accommodation fees in that message @juicy0.

OP posts:
juicy0 · 20/03/2020 17:49

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 nope not a thing and nothing more on the website today. I wonder if they might be in discussions with the N&N hospital and perhaps some halls might be needed for nhs workers? If that is the case then students may be asked if they would like to return their room to the uni? That's part of the discussion at Imperial apparently.

juicy0 · 20/03/2020 18:48

I have just asked the question about rooms next term on uea's latest tweet.

boys3 · 20/03/2020 19:19

well DS2 has received an email from UEA confirming he has successfully completed Yr1 - have not seen the exact wording mind :). Seems to confirm for him / his course at least no further essays expected, no online exam, and seemingly nothing else 'til September. Think I need to get that backpack on and get full sight of whatever it is they sent him.

@icanbewhatiwant belated birthday wishes, you share the day with my DS3.

juicy0 · 20/03/2020 19:42

Which course @boys3 please?

boys3 · 20/03/2020 19:44

history

NotSorry · 20/03/2020 21:11

@juicy0 waiting with interest if you get a reply re: accommodation

PBLR · 20/03/2020 21:34

Well DS has now confirmed UEA as his first choice. DH and I are really pleased. He should get D DD for his Btec. The college is doing online support so he should finish but if they take GCSE 's into account they were all 6 and 5's ( 4 of each) so here's hoping it doesn't go against him in any calculation measures. D D from last year tho so that might help.
Sooo hoping to join you guys in September, we loved it when we went to the visit day and I have kept dipping into the thread

sluj · 20/03/2020 22:06

Welcome PBLR, I don't think you will have any regrets. Hope your DS is coping ok with the uncertainty, none of us expected this.

Please feel free to ask anything you need to know.Smile

PBLR · 21/03/2020 03:30

Thanks sluj I'm sure I will be back to you all over the next few weeks and months

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/03/2020 09:03

Hello @PBLR and great that your DS wants to go to UEA.

I had a look at the UEA website yesterday evening and couldn't find anything about the accommodation issue in the FAQ (about the pandemic and university life). I suspect they will be thinking of it behind the scenes.
