Backpack for University

Just occurred to me that DS will need one for uni. What’s everyone else’s child using or what would you recommend? Im particularly interested in:

Ability to store laptop of about 17inch plus folder
Very good back support! So good shoulder straps and padding.

I’ve looked on amazon and there’s a myriad of back packs it’s difficult to know what to choose from.

Perhaps you should spend some time working in a school where you will encounter a number of helicopter parents but also a large number who couldn't give a shiny shit about their children.
Then you might appreciate the ones who want to help theirs out a little and care enough to buy them gifts.

Shimy · 13/09/2019 17:26

Thanks very much for all the backpack recommendations. I’ve ordered one for my DEAR CHILD 🙄and infact was delivered today. His response, “Yeah!” Smile.

Working in Education has clearly tipped @Rubicon80 over the edge or was that @roisinagusniamh

Frothing at the mouth over at a stranger on the Internet asking about a bag. You know absolutely nothing about me, or my family dynamic, nothing at all. I’m shocked at the ignorance and sheer arrogance displayed in your posts. You have no idea why I’m ordering a bag for my dc or why or where we are? Do you even know if We are in the U.K.? Nor is it any of your business! a parent you’ve never met ordering a bag for their 18yr old tells you absolutely nothing else.

You’re inability to reason and consider you might be projecting from your work situation as well your own family life is your problem here. All you know is, someone is asking for bag recommendations. You DON’T know and can’t possibly know what is going on in the background.

You have accused me of being controlling, a less than half decent parent, of the type calling my dc at uni to wake them up, of following them to interviews all totally based on YOUR experiences in your place of work. Apparently you can read all this through my OP. Inspite of posters telling you you might have got this all wrong you still refused to wind your necks in.

You’ve made complete fools of yourselves on this thread and shown yourselves up as a vile nasty pair.

Once again thanks to all those who came on to lighten the mood a bit and offer support.

shimy, you are genuinely one of the nicest, kindest people on MN. Your DC is very lucky to have you. Star

fluffiphlox · 13/09/2019 17:33

I hope he has a great first year. 👍

Shimy · 13/09/2019 17:38

Oh! Piggy you’ve just made me 😢😢. Thank you.
Some people have so little going on in their lives they just come on the internet to spout their venom.

Shimy · 13/09/2019 17:41

Thank you @fluffiphlox and yours too.

shimy Flowers

And I agree with piggy - when there are so many neglectful parents out there, why pick on the ones that care?

and I find it hard to believe a genuine academic at a uk university wouldn't think it was a good idea to mention contraception to their teen

0lga · 13/09/2019 17:46

You owned them OP Grin

Serin · 13/09/2019 17:46

Well this thread moved on didnt it!
I might go and buy my lad a teddy bear keyring to hang on the army rucksack. GrinThat would totally fuck him up wouldn't it.

Trewser · 13/09/2019 17:53

Yup.

I think MN should introduce a rucksack emoji

fluffiphlox · 13/09/2019 18:00

@Shimy no offspring here but coincidentally I was working today near the campus of the university I went to. Joking apart on the pants remark I made, it was quite a big time in my life. He’ll be fine I’m sure.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2019 18:47

Do oxbridge allow backpacks or should we look into leather satchels?

They do ... I could provide photographic evidence, DDs untrendy pack randomly appeared in one of the DMs 'Cambridge students have a picnic' pieces of 'journalism'. It was lying next to a couple of pals who were peacefully sleeping in the sun.

Aurea · 13/09/2019 19:03

@shimy
Good on you! I've read this thread with utter amazement at the judgemental attitudes on here.

But please tell us.....which backpack did you buy and how do you find it?
😊

yikesanotherbooboo · 13/09/2019 21:31

My DC used bags they had had for school.

ProfessorLayton1 · 13/09/2019 21:45

Not sure what Dd is going to use to transport her books/ laptop in university.
I don't think she has thought this through!
She has given her school backpack to her younger sister who was really grateful for the hand me down!

She is taking minimum amount of clothes apparently and haven't bought any new clothes.
While out food shopping she was wondering if she may require any notebook for university!!

We still have a week and I have got a list of things she should be taking and am planning to check if she has them all before she leaves.

Prompted by this thread I did ask if she will need any backpack - the answer was something nice and colourful 😂 But I know she would just take any backpack I buy her... I am going to really really miss her, she is a low maintenance child who does not ask for anything much! Ahh... I am welling up writing this post, I always thought I will be strong and let her spread her wings when the time comes..

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2019 22:21

Reams of lined A4 and ringbinders surely ... but funnily enough these are likely to be readily available when she gets there. Grin

Without a doubt Trew , you're the biggest clown on this thread.Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/09/2019 22:53

Get some real issues in your life to worry about.

And yet you keep coming back to a thread about backpacks that you clearly don't agree with and also just to fling insults at other posters.

I understand why your DD doesn't need your involvement in her backpack. she's probably had it packed for years waiting on the day she can get away to Uni. It's to be hoped that she takes her brains and personality from her other parent.

Hoghgyni · 13/09/2019 23:17

I've treated myself to a Fjallraven Foldsack for my birthday using some cash from my mum. She sent me the money & told me to buy a bag I liked. I am late 40s though. DD does have an entire wardrobe of their Kankens.

roisinagusniamh · 13/09/2019 23:20

A little bit worked up now, are we Wax?
Get a grip and stop being so silly.
Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/09/2019 23:27

Not worked up in the slightest, just sitting watching a programme on netflix and chilling. Just wondering why some random wants to wade in and cause and argument over someone looking for recommendations for a backpack for a student to the point of hurling abuse. It's pretty unpleasant to be honest.

I also apologise for my earlier comments, it's not that they were unwarranted, but I really shouldn't stoop so low...

Have a delightful evening and weekend.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2019 23:41

Get a grip

Well, I suppose it could be a viable alternative to a backpack...
