Backpack for University

Just occurred to me that DS will need one for uni. What’s everyone else’s child using or what would you recommend? Im particularly interested in:

Ability to store laptop of about 17inch plus folder
Very good back support! So good shoulder straps and padding.

I’ve looked on amazon and there’s a myriad of back packs it’s difficult to know what to choose from.

Without a doubt Trew, you’re the biggest clown on this thread

No roisinagusniamh that is entirely your honour. By a considerable margin. Well maybe along with one other poster.

Rather a nasty clown tbh.

Ha ha. Because buying your child a practical gift for uni is TOTALLY the same as being a toxic parent.

Happydaughterhappymum · 14/09/2019 12:11

These are very cool and handmade in scotland:

The arkaig is a perfect size for everyday work or uni.

At £100 it's expensive but indestructible, free repairs for life and all UK sourced parts and labour. One to blow the student loan on!
(No, I don't work for the company :))

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2019 12:18

Trying to persuade DS to empty his Nike school rucksack as we speak. Expecting rotten apples !!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/09/2019 12:20

That looks fab @Happydaughterhappymum!

Have to say that I fail to see how enquiring about a good backpack equates with toxic parenting. Personally I totally get wanting recommendations and investing in something that will a) last and b) has street cred value'. Most DC can do the latter but not necessarily grown up enough yet to understand the value of the former!

Trewser · 14/09/2019 13:02

Just been into town with dd and she was admiring the North Face rucksacks. I had great pleasure buying one for her Smile

0lga · 14/09/2019 14:24

@Trewser you are obviously an evil controlling witch and I’m going to report you to social services right now. And probably log it with the police for good measure.

ChangeItChild · 14/09/2019 15:27

Just dropped DS off at University, it was heartwarming to see them all arriving with their excited parents and trolley-loads of 'stuff'! Probably a lot of it unnecessary, bought by well meaning parents. My DS tolerated me for a while before it was time to leave, he appreciated my fussing (but was definitely happy to see the back of me)

I didn't buy him a backpack btw, but I would've if he needed it! I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next stage in my life but also watching him develop his independence and build his own future.

I'm really shocked by the bitchiness on this thread it baffles me why people don't just ignore a thread that annoys them, instead of trying to tear other people down. It's sad that you need to trash other people to make you feel better about your own life choices.

OP I Hope it goes well for your DS, they are about to embark on the best few years of their lives it's so exciting and a privilege to set them off of their way.

berlinbabylon · 14/09/2019 15:35

I think some pp's have forgotten that this is the well mannered and collaborative HE thread.

Not AIBU.

berlinbabylon · 14/09/2019 15:36

And if toxic parenting = doing nice things for your older kids, I am a toxic parent.

In fact, so is my mother.

Hate the use of "parent" as a verb anyway.

My DS was dropped off at uni. today, he wanted his old school rucksack for some sentimental reason.

@Rubicon80
Hahaha!

Come back when your DC magically become adults on the stroke of midnight of their 18th Birthday!

It never fails to amaze me how judgy people can be towards other parents when they've literally got zero experience as their own kids are like 9 or something

CheeseStraws · 14/09/2019 19:35

It's a bit worrying if the academics on here are so cross with our families before they even begin because they are under so much pressure.

Our PFB was 100% ready to go and has been very independent for years. I know our other DC won't be quite as much prepared. It's an individual thing.

Witchend · 14/09/2019 19:53

I received a present from my mum yesterday.
You'll never believe it.
It's a new tennis racquet bag. I've had my current one 21 years.
She's written me a letter saying she hopes that it is suitable because she'd asked her friends what they thought the best ones are and, guess what, it's a backpack one, which apparently is what they suggested.

Rather than writing back thanking her for her thoughtful gift that she's put a lot of effort into choosing one that she thinks would be most suitable I shall berate her with the power of MN for being controlling and helicopter and insulting me by thinking I can't choose my own. Hmm

Lililili · 14/09/2019 20:03

Jansport have a lifetime guarantee. My dd has carried an awful lot of heavy books around in hers for 2 years, it’s been washed a few times and it’s still like new. She has the big student one and will probably carry on with it at university. Very big.

Sunndowne · 14/09/2019 21:23

I don't know if I've missed the point of this thread but I assumed it was delightfully light hearted in the countdown to offspring flying the nest!

Last year, soon off to uni, my DD had earnest conversations about what backpack she needed as she had a bike and wanted it to be pretty and practical at same time. It was important to her at that point.

I'll have to read more of the thread but it seems a nice light chat has turned sour!! Social media really is volatile!!Smile

Northernlurker · 14/09/2019 23:07

I going to offer to buy dd2 a new rucksack now. Not because I'm trying to control her life but because it would be nice.

drsausage · 15/09/2019 01:43

A few weeks ago I went onto a Facebook group for parents of students at DD's university and asked what would be a good duffel bag to buy her.

Oddly, no one accused me of being a toxic, overbearing parent. They just... suggested some duffel bags that had worked out well for their offspring.

Anyway, I'm reading this thread with interest as I want a good backpack for myself, and I really hoped a thread this long would have lots of good recommendations.
