Took our DS1 to a West Country University from the south east. We've spent awhile collecting bedding towels, cleaning stuff, cooking and eating stuff. He has never showed any inclination to cook etc but we have spent the summer fast tracking cooking, cleaning, washing ironing and issues such as consent alcohol etc. He's a bit anxious so although I miss him I've got to be together for him.

I managed to cook tonight's beef joint with the plastic underneath it still!

I have double and triple checked dds drop off day as it seems very late.compared to many but it's right. Her room is available on 28th and term starts on 30th Sept.

She's been cooking lots of casseroles. In smallish batches. Taking tips from the cook at the cafe she works in. :)

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 18:55

Hi DrMadelineMaxwell how was the driving test?

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 15/09/2019 18:56

We're home, minus ds who has just texted and said he's in his new local Spoons with his new flatmates Grin

Ds has a nut allergy,he is under strict instructions to let his flat mates know- I'm very twitchy about it. The kitchen is huge so lots of space for preparation.

He lucked out with his accomodation,it's fab, even has french windows in the kitchen on to a green area, his room is right next to the bathroom and his bigger than expected. We were in and out with in half an hour as he didn't want us to stick around.

I cried for a nano second on the way home then breathed a huge sigh of relief.

We're going to go and visit in November for a long weekend, give him time to settle it and we'll be pleased to see him by then.

I don’t think there are any big supermarkets within walking distance at Bath

There's a Sainsbury's at odd down, walkable if you have half a day spare but at least it's on the flat Grin a huge Sainsbury's in town and the big Waitrose also in town. Either way, if he chooses, the right times, delivery can cost the same (or less) than the bus fare. And unless he's got muscles and plenty of stamina, even walking to the Tesco express half way down bathwick hill will be a massive trek. I'm not sure where the nearest Tesco and Asda are but they'll probably deliver too.

Onsite shops will probably be pricy.

nokidshere · 15/09/2019 18:59

Sorry, that was assuming Bath Uni and not Bath Spa Uni Confused

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 19:01

Well done Pellegrino !! Sounds great.

Decorhate · 15/09/2019 19:04

@nokidshere Thanks for that, more or less confirms what I thought from a quick google. I think Ds will have a fairly full timetable so he will need to be organised with his shopping then!

strawberrieshortcake · 15/09/2019 19:05

@DrMadelineMaxwell DD doesn’t start till October 8th so definitely not the latest. I wonder how they’ll feel over the next two weeks as they will obviously see their friends enjoying freshers week on social media.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 19:13

strawberries is that Oxbridge then?

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 15/09/2019 19:16

Dropped Dd off at Liverpool yesterday. Lovely flat with lots of space. She didn’t get to bed until 3 in the morning so her worries that she wouldn’t have anything in common with her flatmates were clearly groundless. Today they have been to Lidl for a ‘family shop’ and (judging by the messages about cooking) planning a group meal. No mention on the news of a big fire in Liverpool so I am assuming that they haven’t burned the flat down.

Atreus · 15/09/2019 19:27

@Decorhate I'm pretty sure all the main supermarkets deliver to Bath campus. When I was illicitly lurking on the Bath SU Instagram live chat the other day (shhhh, don't tell the backpack brigade), I'm sure they mentioned this plus suggested flats group together to do one big order. Seems to require quite a lot of upfront cooperation and coordination but maybe something to aim for.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 19:36

My DS routinely goes to bed at 10.15 pm so not sure how he'll cope with late nights!!

LillianGish · 15/09/2019 19:38

Aw Piggy news of you dropping your DS off actually brought a tear to my eye. I feel I have followed his (and your) progress every step of the way on this thread. So glad it went went well. Good luck to everyone whose DCs start next week. We are off to Cardiff with DD next weekend so keep your fingers crossed for us (and looking forward to seeing any top last minute tips from those who have already done drop-offs).

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/09/2019 19:41

@Benjispruce thanks for remembering and asking.
4th test.
4th fail. Hesitation at temp traffic lights with an obstructed view ahead.

I've recommended she not stress about it and does an intensive course in June when shes back for the summer so as to avoid learning in the winter and as have a holiday booked for april in Italy.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/09/2019 19:43

@strawberrieshortcake ... no fear there for dd. She doesnt do social media.
And doesnt really do friendships either for that matter.

Which is one thing I will worry about.
She will make friends at uni in her classes.
And prob in her halls.
But she has never chosen to meet up with school.friends after school and isn't keen to socialise.

I hope she surprises us on that score.

bigTillyMint · 15/09/2019 19:44

Yes I was going to say they can get stuff delivered - best if they coordinate with others in the flat. Also cheaper way of buying alcohol 😉😁

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2019 19:45

That's very kind Lillian. Thank you.

The backpack naysayers would have a fit at my parenting!!
Text received approx. half an hour after leaving him, asking me where I had put his coat!! On the coathook, obviously...

bigTillyMint · 15/09/2019 19:45

@DrMadelineMaxwell, I think thats a good idea - maybe give her time to forget her nerves.

Benjispruce · 15/09/2019 19:47

Oh that’s a shame Dr. DD just passed hers a couple of months ago unexpectedly 1st time after a year of learning. It seems so much harder these days with parking and sat navs etc. I think an intensive is the way to go. A friend of mine did one after a few fails and passed.

I have been trying to teach my ds how to cook. But he has been very reluctant to try. He can cook basics like pasta, beans on toast etc. I have been through making bolognese or a chilli a few times. We always end up arguing. He says that I tell him to stir things up but don't explain how to stir things, then I say soften the onion but don't explain how soft etc. etc. I find it all very frustrating. I bought him some student cook books but he says they aren't any good as they don't explain things enough. 😩
He has always been very indecisive. Yesterday I sent him to the post box half a mile away with a student finance form. I told him to go on his bike. He spent 10 mins deciding whether or not to cycle or walk. Apparently he can't cycle with a letter in his hand!!! So he took his car.
