Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

@ifonly4 have you checked the suitcase will fit under DD's bed? or are you planning to bring back with you? Uncertainty on bed storage space is one reason we're going with squishy IKEA bags for clothing/bedding

LIZS · 04/09/2019 11:16

Not all accommodation has space under the bed. Ds had a second trundle bed tucked away (locked in place) underneath which could be used when the room was let out during vacations.

Mustbetimeforachange · 04/09/2019 11:17

Both of mine had lift up beds with storage underneath so they stored spare sheets & towels in there along with the IKEA bags.

ifonly4 · 04/09/2019 11:34

New thanks

MrKlaw to be honest we haven't checked. She's going 650 miles away so is going to have to manage the journey herself after this, and she'll need a suitcase for bringing clothes and files back. Apparently her roommate has had three cases shipped on ahead of her, so it's going to be interesting with two of them in a room!

CointreauVersial · 04/09/2019 13:20

Well, have done the "IKEA trip" - amusingly, as we walked through the door we bumped into DD1's best friend and family doing exactly the same thing.

All the essentials purchased, except laundry rack (they had the choice of massive or tiny). She is particularly chuffed with her cocktail shaker. Grin

But she is a bit distressed that she doesn't know what colour the curtains are going to be (how can I accessorise, mum?), or how many shelves there are in the wardrobe (where will I put my shoes?). I am trying to stop her taking her huge Hollywood-style illuminated mirror, because I'm pretty sure there will be absolutely nowhere to put it. Honestly, she's such a princess; don't know where she gets it from!

LillianGish · 04/09/2019 13:26

Thank you @Shimy DD has now enrolled Smile She’s also found some girls who are in the same flat as her on the Facebook page.

I think we have another IKEA trip ahead of us, maybe next week (if there will be any stock left by then).

It is quite amusing seeing so many mums and 18/19 year old DC trailing around the shop! I expect bribery by meatballs features !

DS2 was bribed with a breakfast. We were done and dusted by 10:45am. I think he's gone for a nap.

MrKlaw · 04/09/2019 14:31

DW won't let me use our laundry basket as a makeshift moving box ('dirty university rooms') so I'm scouring supermarkets after work to see if they have any fruit boxes going spare..

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/09/2019 14:57

No need to hurry over to the new thread just yet - still got 64 posts to put up on this one.

Anyone else's DS or DD totally uninterested in even thinking about what they might need to take to uni? There is no way my DS would agree to an Ikea trip, He did choose a new (grey Grin) duvet cover but when I mention anything else he just shrugs & says 'he'll manage' .... I have just shoved a few spare bits in a large box & I'm leaving him to it now .... his Halls are right in the centre of the city so he can easily get anything he needs ... I guess I am saving money & not having to worry about packing the car but I wish he would be a bit more proactive in planning. .

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/09/2019 15:49

@Ragwort my DS isn't overly fussed TBQH.

We’ve done the IKEA trip - she’s out with a mate buying clothes and stationery today .

Benjispruce · 04/09/2019 15:54

Who would want to rent a student room in the holidays??? Hmm

wigglybeezer · 04/09/2019 15:58

@ifonly4 I'll be dropping DS2 of in halls at St Andrews on Saturday too, he's staying if halls for second year, couldn't face the bunfight of the private letting market, or all had to be sorted when he'd barely been away from home for a term and wasn't even 18 yet. He's going to attempt to find a flat this year though. It was quite entertaining spotting all the different styles of luggage and bits and bobs, one glamourus girl had a Louis Vuitton trunk! We were more blue IKEA bag!

MrKlaw · 04/09/2019 16:20

@Ragwort thats totally my DS. We have a lovely list but he's not bothered.

  • do you need a cheese grater? Nah probly not
  • what about a spider catcher (he hates spiders)? Nah I'll manage
  • decorations? Pah

I bought a bloody MBP last Thursday and he's still not opened it!

love him really and fully expect to break down in the kitchen in front of all of his new roommates. That'll teach him :D

MarchingFrogs · 04/09/2019 16:23

Who would want to rent a student room in the holidays???

You mean, like the actual student, who might have a local job / no real 'home' to go to because they are estranged from parents or a care leaver, or an international (or anyone) who can't afford the fare home more than once a year, or someone who just wants to take advantage of the relative peace and quiet of the facilities out of term time?

Or an organisation, looking for somewhere to host a conference which can also provide accommodation, or someone attending a course in a university city?

CointreauVersial · 04/09/2019 16:29

Plenty of universities host training courses and seminars over the holidays, and use student accommodation for delegates.

SoupDragon · 04/09/2019 16:35

DS1's room in student accommodation was more like a hotel room. It would have been fine to rent out (once cleaned 😂)

MrKlaw · 04/09/2019 16:45

I can understand having seminars etc on a campus, but I can't imagine delegates staying in student accommodation -they'd just stay in a local hotel surely?

MrKlaw · 04/09/2019 16:46

accommodation question - more a hypothetical but I'll ask anyway:

Clearing accommodation - its possible my DS gets a shared room which he is dreading. Theoretically if there is capacity is it possible to rent both beds? Looking at prices renting both beds in a shared room is oddly still cheaper than the cheapest single occupancy room

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/09/2019 16:48

@MrKlaw that might be a possibility but only if there is more of such accommodation available than demand for it, I would have thought. You could always ring up the Accommodation Office at Bath University to find out?

DSs was well placed for the centre of town, had a car park, manned front desk and en-suite rooms. Just like a hotel but with the addition of a communal kitchen per "flat" of rooms.

JennyWreny · 04/09/2019 16:58

@MrKlaw You did get the student discount and free headphones for the MBP didn't you?
