Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

Aha, I have just found a new single bed mattress protector with DSs old duvet cover which is in good condition Smile

Benjispruce · 30/08/2019 20:00

Good luck wax!
I wish I could go and buy everything for DD’s room. I picked up a nice duvet cover and sheet at Sainsbury’s today but showed DD when she got home from work to disapproval . Thing is she procrastinates so much and I’m back to work next week. Grrrrrrr!

Benjispruce · 30/08/2019 20:02

just Yes DD’s 19th a few days before she goes so will have a family get together for that so everyone can say farewell!

Mustbetimeforachange · 30/08/2019 20:16

I think I've said this before but some rooms would have no room for a rug. DS1's certainly didn't, it was long & thin with the desk under the window & a 4 foot bed.

RedHelenB · 30/08/2019 20:21

@JennyWreny they had a few nice ones but we ended up returning it because she found a really soft grey one she liked in TK max the other day.

RedHelenB · 30/08/2019 20:24

@Mustbetimeforachange We ve been to see dd2s accommodation and it will fit nicely and they are allowed. Worse case scenario is it will do for their student house the next year!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 20:26

Thanks again all. He finished up from school at the end of April, had a couple of exams and has worked 2 days over the summer. Feck knows why he still sorting stuff with hours to go. Not sure when he finishes up. DS1 is a bit of a brainbox so he had no exams to do for his first year last year so effectively finished up at the end of march and still has a couple of weeks left before he goes back.

We got a double duvet even though it's a single bed. He is used to a double, he's nearly 6'3 so I think he is going to find it tight for space!

ifonly4 · 30/08/2019 20:39

Wax hope it goes okay tomorrow. It just has to be done, leaving everything to the last minute.

Another week to go here, but they'll be 2000 going into DD's section of halls alone, 6000 for her uni and two other unis in the area, so going to be a nightmare. Be interesting to know how it goes regarding queuing for you.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 20:50

Thanks, i'll update after we get sorted. I think technically we could have moved him in after midnight tonight as it says you can move in from the day the contract starts and that they are open 24 hours... Too late now, we've all been to the pub :) Might be an even earlier start as we had thought to save room and weight, we'd do the food shop up there, however now thinking that that will mean coming off campus with the car and then trying to get back on again. DH says to see what we have to get in and then maybe nip out early before we leave and get the shopping except maybe milk and then we can maybe just walk to get that - although rain is to be torrential and we now have flood warnings.

JennyWreny · 30/08/2019 20:56

Must thanks for the tip. I think there might be room but not 100% sure so will take a look at the Ikea offerings and maybe measure up and order online if necessary.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/08/2019 20:58

FFS.... DD got a letter from her department today, welcoming her and reminding her of a few key dates. Including the need for her to rank and choose her modules by 2pm TODAY. Our post comes late in the day and the link had already closed. I've got her to do it anyway and to email the dept with it (and an apology for not doing it as I'm sure there would have been info on having to do it on the website too) and hopefully someone will look at it. But probably not if they are strict with their deadlines.

She's had a lot of admin to do. A far cry from when I just rocked up at uni on my first day to find out what to do and had it all sorted out there and then.

bigTillyMint · 30/08/2019 21:06

@DrMadeleineMaxwell, DS had to choose is by Mon despite not starting for a month - he is working all weekend so thankfully dud it today. Fingers crossed she gets what she wants

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 21:12

DS had to choose his modules on line - it was a bit of a faff. Register on one thing and then wait a few hours for that to register and then email you with something, then register with something else and wait for hours and then get on and choose but everytime you looked at the info on the topics then it took you back to the beginning again. Once you've done that, then wait for hours again until it generates a timetable and then you need to select which tutorials you want to go to - choice of about 6 for each subject which all clash and overlap. Got it sorted eventually and managed to timetable himself with every wednesday free and friday afternoons off.

DS1 is doing computing and he has much more contact time and virtually no choice (1 x 10 credit module over 2 semesters is a free choice). DS2 only had 15 credits allocated for each semester so had another 90 credits (6 subjects) to select.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 30/08/2019 21:16

Good luck for tomorrow @WaxOnFeckOff! Still can't believe it's only a fortnight since they got their results. So much water under the bridge!

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 30/08/2019 21:19

Oh gosh Wax, DS hasnt got that far yet - just picking his choices, reserves and options was bad enough!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 21:27

Our results day was 6th August so we've had a little more time. All DS1s offers were unconditional so we knew from the February before he started exactly what he was doing. He chose to stay at home and travel though so DS2 is the first to move out.

The system was a bit daunting to begin with but it actually worked well as at least it was all sorted within 24 hours and it was all automated so no humans were involved so it was only waiting on the system to update. :)

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/08/2019 21:44

Well, if she has to study the history of Brexit, she has only herself to blame!

MrKlaw · 30/08/2019 22:06

Another thing to chase DS to see if he’s done. I can’t see a math timetable or reading list on the Bath website but maybe he will have email from them for choosing modules - although as a fresher you’d think they’d have a semester of core/foundation to get your feet under the table first

Uni really needs to have option of cc’ing parents on important admin topics.

Mustbetimeforachange · 30/08/2019 22:17

Some do, MrKlaw, DS refused. They do have to do it on their own when they get there Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 22:28

My problem is that DSs DCD (Dyspraxia) means that he is very disorganised and struggles with stuff like this, he can't cope with too many demands on him at the same time. he gets really anxious about emails. He is being a pain about engaging with the support team and I can only nag so much. He is supposed to type everything but doesn't want to stand out so is refusing to take his laptop. Trying not to be shouty and naggy tonight though.

RedHelenB · 30/08/2019 22:33

@WaxOnFeckOff. I think he may be surprised by how many other students take laptops. My dd only got her dyslexia diagnosis last year and she'll be using hers.

Benjispruce · 30/08/2019 22:35

DD has her Mac book.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 22:51

That's what I've been trying to tell him but he can be a thrawn bugger just like his mum To be fair he probably needs a new laptop as his current one is quite old and it's huge (19 inch I think) so isn't exactly portable. When we did the open day and were still waiting on his diagnosis, the support team said to wait until he'd done the assessment with them as he might get some financial support for equipment or software. I'm happy to buy him a new one if not and would have got him his own printer too as they mentioned he might need to print off his notes more depending on what they decided he needs. He wont speak up for himself though but he will struggle to complete everything without using ICT as it's heavy on the writing and whilst he can write, his motor skills have been assessed as on the 5th percentile and he has hyper-mobile joints in his fingers, wrists, elbows etc which means he gets tired quickly when writing.

Mustbetimeforachange · 30/08/2019 23:05

DD used a Chromebook in lectures, very light to carry around (& cheap!). She had a regular laptop as well - long story as to how she ended up with both! He will need a laptop anyway, won't he?

ProlificLurker · 30/08/2019 23:09

Good luck to WaxOn’s DS and all the other early starters. It seems to have come round so quickly.

DS is another quiet one - drinks very rarely, only really goes to the pub with his mates for food and never had a girlfriend. He’s quite shy talking to girls but can do it if absolutely necessary, which is just as well as he’s just found out he’s in a flat with 3 girls. He’s hoping the occupant of the other room might be male, but has been chatting online with one of the girls and she’s actually got him interested in a couple of freshers events. Wonders will never cease!

Registered for the uni medical centre today and had a phone call from an existing uni student to check he’d had all his info and if he had any questions. (To which she didn’t know any answers anyway)

And apparently he’s been accepted for HSBC student bank account. They haven’t written to tell him that in so many words, he just found out when he got a new debit card through the post and an email to say he’s been approved for an overdraft. And there’s me worrying about his communication skills!
