Previous thread. Possibly a little precipitous but for some of our DC their university start date is only just over a fortnight away. Yikes!

Ah, OK thanks @NewModelArmyMayhem18 Smile

Apple my DS is going to NTU and no specific drop off time for his halls, DH & I have booked a hotel for the night, we have both taken the day off (Fri 20th) & will drop DS off & then make it a bit of a break away in the city, won't make him join us at any time over the Fri or Sat but if he chooses to meet us for a meal or if we need to buy anything else then we will be around. But we are looking forward to exploring the area as it's somewhere we don't really know very well & there are lots of interesting things to do.

DS equally frustrating about being an 'adult', decided that porridge would be a good option for cheap breakfasts so made some this morning (12 noon Hmm) & then irritated when I pointed out that he also needed to wash out the saucepan....

justasking111 · 28/08/2019 22:59

Got DS drop off time sorted. It was not easy to find on line. We get an hour slot, so should be plenty of time.

AtiaoftheJulii · 28/08/2019 23:02

can anyone advise on what type of clothes storage you’ve bought your dc for uni? Is it one those flat pack ones that need a vacuum to blow it up?

Do you mean for transporting clothes to make them take up less space?
Or do you mean something to put clothes in when they're there?

If the latter, nothing, furniture is provided.

If the former, we're not that pushed for space in our car, and both my older girls have those big tartan laundry bags that you can get down the market or in those shops that sell everything. Takes pretty much all their clothes, but does weigh a ton.

justasking111 · 28/08/2019 23:07

Bought some Ikea bags. DS has under bed storage and a wardrobe. The rest will have to be left in a bag I guess.

AtiaoftheJulii · 28/08/2019 23:11

Ds also reckons there's no particular moving in slot for his Manchester halls.

He's also decided that to save effort on food (although he is actually a perfectly adequate cook) he might just try living on Huel. He often had it for lunch at 6th form college, but every meal might be a bit much!
(uk.huel.com/ if you haven't already come across it.)

justasking111 · 28/08/2019 23:18

Thank god for this thread. DS is now more organised. The others in his whatsapp group did not know any of the tips I have seen posted here and passed onto him. They may imagine him to be a guru of wisdom Grin

Shimy · 28/08/2019 23:23

@AtiaoftheJulii yes that’s what I meant. Tartan bags it is! Thanks.

minesawine · 29/08/2019 00:03

DS, DD and I took a roadtrip to NTU today. It is really fabulous. Nottingham is such a great place to hang out.We did another tour of his halls (Sandby), which is being renovated and looking great. It was good to see how much space he gets. The hall manager was there and promised me she would keep an eye out for him. We had a wander around the students union, gym, onsite night club. We even popped into the launderette, which was spotless. Then into town for lunch, so many nice eateries. Finally a wander down to the river and a mooch around the vintage shops for DD. My DS loved it and is getting excited

MrKlaw · 29/08/2019 06:58

We got a 3 pack of ikea DIMPA bags from amazon for £15 on recommendation from a poster here. They are big and strong and zip up so should be ideal for clothes/bedding etc

DW bought a collapsible laundry basket and a clothes horse. Odds on them ever seeing light of day during term? :)

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2019 07:39

See wiggly, that's the bit that doesn't make sense about Lincoln : off on 23rd (although I actually think that means 20th) and back on the 6th. Basic school holidays!

But might break up in May....

Quite annoying that when you are forced into a 46 week let!

Clankboing · 29/08/2019 07:39

MrKlaw there are a few things in my ds's pile if things that I reckon will lie undisturbed. Dh managed to get a free pan set including a large pan, frying pan and two small pans. Ds is taking the lot but I bet he only needs the frying pan. He's quite domesticated but I know that he will probably only make fried egg in them. Pasta and pesto if he's feeling adventurous. He was puzzled about what a clothes drying rack was. Whoops (blame the mother).

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2019 07:43

tilly, the fee for 'remarks' includes a clerical check.

The review of marking thing is a bit of a misnomer. I think MN and some teacher pedants believe the exam boards when they say it is not a remark. It really is! It just doesn't award the remark if it's within the same marking band, which isn't the same as a grade. You can't review marking of something without remarking it!

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2019 07:45

Unless they plan to do no washing (possibly likely!) they will have to use the clothes horse, though. Or have wet clothes?

Luckily, I have a spare one. If he can figure out how to put it up.

DS will be under strict instructions only to tumble dry underwear and sheets (as if he'll wash sheets!!)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/08/2019 07:50

@minesawine sounds as if you had a good day out too. DSibling was at Sandby Hall many, many moons ago!

We looked round NTU and Nottingham was great!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/08/2019 08:00

Don't clothes dried on clothes horses often get that musty smell though?

OP posts:
Ligresa · 29/08/2019 08:05

I think I'll need to get one for dd. Sports kit is much better air dried.

Propertyfaux · 29/08/2019 08:05

I have bought DS lots of polyester style sports wear for lounging around. All quick dry. I got DS a clothes horse for his towel mainly. He is borderline asthmatic so do not want him sleeping in a room full of wet clothes.

Ligresa · 29/08/2019 08:06

Which one did people buy?

Clankboing · 29/08/2019 08:09

I think ds was just thinking he would use the tumble dryer (like his mother does).

Ligresa · 29/08/2019 08:10

At home we use a mix of tumble dryer and airer. Lots of sports kit shrinks in the dryer or dries so fast there is no need for one.

MrKlaw · 29/08/2019 08:26

we bought this one www.amazon.co.uk/Andrew-James-Freestanding-Portable-Capacity/dp/B01DE0T95O?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Looking at the 360 degree photos of the rooms and from memory of open days, the rooms have very little floor space, so we went tall and thin. And we got a hanging square thing - Ikea do a PRESSA (?) octopus thing - good for hanging lots of socks/pants without taking up lots of space. He'll probably tumble dry a bunch, but that can get expensive fast.

Also for Bath at least we can't use over door stuff because (1) they already have coat hooks there, and (2) they're fire doors and have those big sprung arms on the back to push them closed.

Ligresa · 29/08/2019 08:28

Tbh she'll probably just use a chair.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/08/2019 08:32

We don't own a tumble dryer. (Well...I do have a mini dryer that was my dads. It's 20 plus years old. All I use it for is towels when they are almost dry to fluff them up. It wouldn't cope with wet clothes)
I thought it would be great for ds to be able to tumble dry stuff. Do clothes shrink in the dryers?
