I guess our dc would be known as Sophomores in the States Grin Slightly scary eh?

This is a place to chat about the slightly strange and somewhat intense world our dc now inhabit during term time. It follows on from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3381401-Oxbridge-Freshers-2018

If parents of prospective oxbridge dc have any questions, we are happy to try our best to answer from our limited experience and perspective :)

Hello kitten, have been trawling through but cannot find the pub\restaurant you recommended to parent going to interview. Coz of Lobster, I'm going next weekend for a few hours!Grin and I'd like to try something new!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2020 09:29

It's The Alchemist :)
Not posh or anything, it's a lunchtime level of food. It is tasty though and away from the tourists.

Oooh top tip about the abbey!

I like the look of the menu. Thank you kitten. And DD is up for that scented garden around the Abbey. So hopefully, sorted. SmileFlowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2020 20:54

Apparently there's a green pesto shortage in Cambridge Shock Grin

Well we had lunch at Carluccios and I have been googlomg the Alchemist without success. Have fpumd a restaurant in cambridge massachusetts and a chain of London cocktail bars.

Oh God the untidy shames of dd's room. A total heap. It worries me - she was brought up tidily. She is doing well socially and academically but it makes me wonder if the full life gig is too much for her.

OhTheRoses · 02/02/2020 21:09

Apols for typos - on phone

Sunndowne · 02/02/2020 21:09

So I'm confused Hmm
Google gave me the alchemist elsewhere even though I typed in cambridge. Is it a bakery? Which street? Always like to follow tips!

And how do you know green pesto is rare? Presume our sophisticated kiddos are putting it on their student pasta??? Smile

OhTheRoses · 02/02/2020 21:11

Actually there wasn't much green pesto in my local Surrey sainsbury's last week come to think of it. Had to buy a sacla jar.

Sunndowne · 02/02/2020 21:12

Roses you beat me to it!!!
Don't worry about the room, they have to juggle so much, something has to slide. DD , super organised has a mess of a lovely room

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2020 21:15

oh bugger, sorry, it's the architect Blush Blush

Haha - loving the messy room discussions! DD's work is super organised but everything else is strewn all over the place. I have to resist the urge to impose order when I visit. DH has been know to disappear off to the kitchen and do all the washing up whilst ostensibly making a cup of tea!
Not sure if Oxford has a green pesto crisis - it is a Saturday night staple Confused and in that city, The Alchemist is definitely a cocktail bar Grin.

Bakeandyarn · 03/02/2020 15:55

I can also confirm that DS has as shockingly untidy room! He’s had a busy two weeks but tells me he was spending the weekend sorting his life out because it was so untidy, he hadn’t done any washing (including rugby kit!) and hadn’t emptied the bin in his room since he arrived back. I’m not sure where I went wrong!

Don’t know about the green pesto crisis, it’s far too exotic (!) for DS’s delicate palate, but I do know that it’s very popular with his flat mates.

Sunndowne · 03/02/2020 18:47

DD has half way hall this week. Can you believe it?

Haha. Messy rooms must be a thing!!! Would 've thought very un- mumsnet!!! Grin glad I'm in the messy club with DD, she's so on it, need to know she lets some things go. At home, I quietly pick up behind her. DS is quite good now, post graduation, was gradual improvement actually.

OhTheRoses · 03/02/2020 20:23

Oh yes, dd has halfway hall this week - and is looking forward to it. Grin That is a great step forward.

Even at Sussex 40 years ago the cleaners came in every day and did weekly beds. How the world has changed. Yikes I just wrote 40 years ago!!!!!

ofteninaspin · 04/02/2020 11:41

DD has Halfway Hall too 😀. She says time is passing too quickly! She has part of her finals after Easter.

I went to Hull in the Eighties and my Hall was all girls. Our rooms were cleaned daily and our beds made weekly. Six of us shared a bathroom. It had three huge cast iron rolled top baths (no showers) separated by screens. Each bath had a little step stool so that you could climb in!

Bakeandyarn · 08/02/2020 11:37

DS has halfway hall too, time is flying. I’m not sure why but it feels like each stage of their lives goes by so much more quickly than the last!

ofteninaspin · 08/02/2020 13:59

Agree completely Bake!

Sunndowne · 13/02/2020 22:23

So DD had that rearranged interview and has a very promising internship for her year abroad!! So much effort, lots of interviews but got her favourite role in the end.

Hope all is well with yours. Xx

ofteninaspin · 14/02/2020 06:47

That’s fab Bake. Well done to your DD Smile.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2020 22:00

That's awesome Sunndowne!

Wow fantastic news Sun!
Well Done to your DD, I'm so glad they gave her that second chance.

Mods are looming for DD. Her boyfriend surprised her with a visit today for Valentine's Day. Sounds like they've had a lovely day but she's already back home working anxious that she took a few hours off.

She also had an eye procedure earlier this week which meant she couldn't read for 6 hours so lost an afternoons work there too. She's definitely feeling the pressure this term.

I've got my visit next week for the parents dinner though and can't wait to see her face!

Sunndowne · 15/02/2020 00:25

Poor thing lobster!!! I know, so much work. DD is just about keeping up.

So a turn up for the books! My holiday flight has just been cancelled so I'm off to see her dance show after all.
Hope you enjoy your visit lobster, is that Oxford? We'll be at the other place!Smile
