Following on from thread 8 which filled up in just 72 hours.

I haven't really got spare kitchen stuff at home so I will need to buy DS new stuff. I'll be buying basic stuff though and just the minimum. He can always get extra bits later if he needs them. They're not going to have much storage so there's no point buying too much.

Mustbetimeforachange · 20/08/2019 09:37

I don't think it would matter if they had it twice but I guess it's a waste of money. We have plates etc from grandparents' house. We will have a couple of new pans & he can have ours.
Would recommend charity shops.
The other thing someone recommended to me was not yo get white ones (after we did for DD) so as to easily distinguish them in the pile of dirty plates/other people's rooms.

icanbewhatiwant · 20/08/2019 09:43

Yes I wondered if they can have it twice.

MrKlaw · 20/08/2019 09:59

Folding crates or jumbo ikea bags for packing? Crates might be able to be used as extra storage under beds?

Mustbetimeforachange · 20/08/2019 10:03

The beds are often lift up with storage underneath (DD & DS1, different unis), so large clear Ikea storage bags (with zips) the best. Can also be used to transport washing to the launderette.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 10:04

@Sunflowers211 thank you so much (you'll know what I'm talking about). So sweet!!!

I'm kicking myself that I went to IKEA last week before DS got his results/university place. I'm going to have to go again aren't I?

DS managed to speak to bank to make an appointment without all the Fort Knox codes! Phew, thought we. Then the man said he had to download the app : for which he needed all the codes. Have now been locked out of account.

Sigh.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 10:38

I feel your frustration @Piggywaspushed. I'm becoming more of a Luddite with the pasage of time! I am increasingly coming to the conclusion that technology is one massive, time-consuming (wasting) frustration. Every task is super multi-layered and just seems to take so long to complete.

MandS have home stuff at 20% off and a special Off to Uni section. I've ordered most stuff through there. She's getting a mix of new and old.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 10:47

passage even Hmm

OP posts:
Horsemad · 20/08/2019 10:48

I wonder how it got done before the internet? Phone/letters, I suppose. And the numbers going to uni were lower too.

Mustbetimeforachange · 20/08/2019 10:51

NewModel I would just go to Dunlem/supermarkets. You can get the big clear zip IKEA storage bags on Amazon.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 10:51

I can still remember setting up my bank account yonks ago. I went into a local branch with DF and it was sorted in a trice. Obvs I didn't get cheque book or account payment card immediately but I'm pretty sure it only took the one 15 minute appt and it was sorted.

OP posts:
Danglingmod · 20/08/2019 11:51

You've had bad luck there, Piggy.

Ds's took about ten minutes online with Nationwide (also existing customer, also uc offer so did yonks ago).

MrKlaw · 20/08/2019 12:18

@Mustbetimeforachange DIMPA ikea bag? I saw big blue FRAKTA which looked like they’d also be good for storing under bed - more rectangular and boxy than the ‘giant carrier bag’ style of dimpa

Mustbetimeforachange · 20/08/2019 12:21

Yes MrKlaw, it's the DIMPA ones we have - we use them for all sorts here. I hadn't seen the blue ones before (except the open nes that you buy at the check outs), but they do look quite good. More expensive though, and the others do the job perfectly, plus you can see what's inside.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/08/2019 12:23

We've just got dd the 20 piece started set from Argos as reviews were ok and it gives her pans, oven trays and cutlery and utensils all for £22. And used nectar points to buy It!

She has plates from my dsis. And a bottle opener. :)

I don't want to send her with too much stuff and not have anywhere to keep it, but don't want her spending her maintenance loan (Which will be eaten into massively by the largest of the rent payments in the first term) on things she hasnt got because we didn't think she would need it.

MrKlaw · 20/08/2019 13:40

@DrMadelineMaxwell - nice, that kitchen set looks good! Add in the £3.50 chopping boards and its a solid set. Just need some plates/mugs/bowls and thats most of the kitchen sorted.

Ligresa · 20/08/2019 13:42

Dd is getting my old stuff and I am getting new stuff! She's got my old bottle opener and I have bought myself a much coveted Alessi one :-)

She can have my old cereal bowls as well - might make her more at home while I shop for nice new ones

ZandathePanda · 20/08/2019 14:11

Remark success. They had missed 8 marks on a politics paper - she’s gone up 10%! She was only 2 marks off the A. She’s not bothered about getting the other suspiciously low paper remarked.
Now AAA

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 14:18

Well done to your DD @ZandathePanda. Did you put in the request for a review of marking on Thursday or later - just trying to judge how long they take?

OP posts:
DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/08/2019 14:18

In case it's useful for anyone else.

Charity shops here very sparse for kitchenware..

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 14:22

That looks to be a brilliant deal @DrMadelineMaxwell curses self for being so organised and buying bits and bobs in advance which have cost much more.

OP posts:
juicy0 · 20/08/2019 14:39

@ZandathePanda fantastic news, well done on going for the remark. Did you immediately ask for the review or did you see the script first? Which exam board was it?
