Following on from thread 8 which filled up in just 72 hours.

I would not remember what vaccinations ds had at school but luckily the school sent home some paperwork with the dates & batch numbers on it & I found I had tucked it into his red baby book!

Danglingmod · 20/08/2019 07:53

It definitely only came in (Men ACWY) in our area when the current year 12s were year 9 so our year 13s missed it.

Ds definitely hadn't had it; I assumed it was because he was at an indie, checked with the school nurse at my school when they were doing HPV and she confirmed the year 13s wouldn't have had it.

VanCleefArpels · 20/08/2019 07:55

Spent a ball aching afternoon yesterday with DD doing online registration, something to do with setting up Uni email and WiFi and signing up for Uni medical centre. The next task is choosing modules, which involves choosing 4 modules to do on top of 4 compulsory courses, thinking about timetable clashes and whether or not they have Exams or coursework assessment (best I feel to have a mix). Her Uni allows taking modules from across the whole university not just her “school” so this could be something of an odyssey.....

VanCleefArpels · 20/08/2019 07:56

On vaccinations the GP will definitely have a record of all vaccinations even those given at school. It’s a good idea to get a print out to take to Uni to show Uni medical centre if required

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 07:56

@ZandathePanda, yes it was the school nurse service which sent the initial letter (via DS's school) to advise his cohort that they needed to be vaccinated at specially run clinics during the summer hols. It has to be said though that I'm now confused as to whether it was Men. C or the MenACWY that he had. I'd assumed the latter but now there's a shadow of a doubt in my mind...AAARGH.

"On vaccinations the GP will definitely have a record of all vaccinations even those given at school."

This is very interesting - as my impression was that our GP hadn't had an update! but it seems most have. I suppose it could vary by area.

ZandathePanda · 20/08/2019 08:07

For Dd they had an extra ‘W’ jab I think as a catch up and put it with the cervical cancer one I think. Or the tetanus and Hib ones. Now I am confused! Having had 2 girls at the same school and my old emails not detailing the actual jabs is not helping!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 08:07

DS has been trying to get a non-urgent appt with our GP and keeps being told to phone back in "a couple of days" (but repeatedly). Not at all impressed.

Ragwort, I agree!

I also have no idea about vaccinations and as DS was barely at school in Y11, he may well have missed it - he'll have to ring the GP WinkSmile

He got a job about 3 weeks ago and has been working loads of shifts so should have a fair bit of money in his account by the time he goes.
And he was looking at course modules and reading lists last night Shock

Ligresa · 20/08/2019 08:09

Dd2 had an asthma check last week and I asked her to check dd1s vaccinations. She needed meningitis which she had on Friday . Nurse said meningitis is on the increase so I'm glad she had it. No mention of Mmr vaccine booster needed.

Ligresa · 20/08/2019 08:09

Sorry, i asked the nurse to check. Dd2 does not have that information!

Ligresa · 20/08/2019 08:10

Even though dd1 is 19 they were happy for me to enquire and arrange.

Mustbetimeforachange · 20/08/2019 08:16

I wish they would give the boys HPV vaccinations :(

Domovoi · 20/08/2019 08:16

Hello everyone, may I join you, I've been lurking for a bit and following all you and your DC's journeys. Gap year DC here, results not as hoped for last year, but the year out has been a tremendous help to put life in perspective, earn some money, do volunteering work and travel. For any in the same boat, applying with grades in hand did make a big difference even if they weren't the requirements for the course. Was going to resit one of her A levels, but when offers came in decided not too. Off at the end of September now, she's so excited Smile

Ligresa · 20/08/2019 08:20

Hi domovoi my dd was in the same boat and i think is off to the same uni Swansea?

SoonerthanIthought · 20/08/2019 08:26

"I wish they would give the boys HPV vaccinations"

I think (in some areas at least, in England) they are going to be doing so from this autumn.

What puzzled me is that HPV is not available at the GP for girls/women (and I assume boys/men!) once they're 18 - and I think that effectively means it's not available on the NHS for them. I know the rationale for doing it early is that it's more effective if done before the person is sexually active, but that doesn't rule out all 18 year olds (even allowing for my naivety, I am fairly certain of that!)

Obviously I realise that the vast majority will already have had the hpv by the time they're 18 anyway, but if for any reason they haven't, not sure why a catch up isn't available.

Domovoi · 20/08/2019 08:26

Yes Ligresa, good to hear another story- really liked Swansea on the open days Smile

SoonerthanIthought · 20/08/2019 08:29

Domovoi that's lovely to hear - hope your dd has a great time!

Does that mean your dd applied to courses with grades lower than the published entry requirements and got unconditional offers (ie not dependent on the resit?) That is really interesting. Had dd checked with admissions that it could be worth doing that, or was it a 'punt'?

Witchend · 20/08/2019 08:37

I've just signed the form for D's to have the HPV vaccine, so they are giving it to boys in some areas at least.

Domovoi · 20/08/2019 08:38

Hi SoonerthanIthought - all she applied to had entry requirements higher than DD's achieved grades, she spoke at length to the course admission tutors at open days before applying, combination of A levels she did made a difference (for a science degree), and all were unconditional almost within hours of submitting her UCAS. Decided at that point not to do resit (was worried she might not do better anyway from the start).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/08/2019 08:40

I wish they would give the boys HPV vaccinations I am sure I've read somewhere that the HPV vaccination is going to be introduced for boys very soon (next year?). Not sure whether it will be available in a 'catch up programme' for boys of our DC's age (and potentially older) though.

OP posts:
Mustbetimeforachange · 20/08/2019 08:41

I think year 8s will get the HPV vaccine from September but there is no catch up for the older children. Gay men can have it if they go to an STD clinic or HIV clinic!

icanbewhatiwant · 20/08/2019 09:14

I'm none the wiser for menACWY vaccine. I called health centre, nothing on record but the nurse will call me sometime today. There must be records kept somewhere of what vaccines they had. I know he had several at once around year 9. Why on earth didn't I keep the paperwork? Silly me.
I might have to wait until the school re opens and ask what his year had.

FrameyMcFrame · 20/08/2019 09:17

I'm also kitting out DD with plates etc from home.

I lost all the stuff I had in first year at uni so I'm not buying new things for her.

2 of each thing should be fine. We have lots of spare bits and bobs kicking around!

FrameyMcFrame · 20/08/2019 09:20

What would happen if you had the menACWY vaccine twice?
