I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

Wonder if it's like school, that those who live closest often turn up last?

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 Grin Grin

Bit like goldenruby we are about a two and a half hour drive away, maybe a few minutes less on a Sunday morning. I think if DS2 arrival day was Saturday we'd aim for the end of the afternoon in the hope that the majority of arrivals had been and gone. With it being Sunday I think maybe earlier rather than later. I presume that a specific flat in hall has its arrivals, for home students at least, split over the two days?

juicy0 · 28/08/2019 20:27

@icanbewhatiwant there seems to be a lot of inconsistency, not just with HSBC but other banks too, whether or not you need an appointment seems to be a lottery 🤷‍♀️
Good news that short arrival slots are not allocated, it will make for a more relaxed day for those travelling from further afield particularly if there are any traffic holdups.
Asking flat mates what time they plan to arrive is a good idea, I'll suggest DD speaks to them.

Still no luck filling in the registration forms. It's just stuck with the spinning thing at the top. He's tried refresh. Doesn't work. He's tried starting again but it tells him how far he's filled in and where he needs to continue, so he just gets back to the same page. He can go back one page, fills it in again, then it gets stuck again when he moves forward. He has emailed UEA. No reply yet. It's frustrating. He's getting cross.
Several more have joined the Facebook chat from his accommodation, all girls apart from the one from India. While ds was at work the girls spent the day discussing what they are wearing for various freshers events, so when he got home there were pages and pages of messages. He wouldn't read through as I think girls discussing clothes is not his thing 😂 They have all decided the colour for them all to wear from their flat is pink 😕 for one of the events.
They are all continuing to chat on Facebook....But he's worked 11 hours today and is now off to bed. I think he may feel a bit left out soon.

GoldenRuby · 28/08/2019 21:17

@icanbewhatiwant I think the colour think is for the first night of the freshers events. Each accommodation area has been allocated a colour. DS is in the Village and their colour is white. I think he has a mainly white T shirt somewhere, so that will do. How long it stays white with him in charge of his washing is another matter!

GoldenRuby · 28/08/2019 21:17

...thing not think. Fat fingers!

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 21:26

@GoldenRuby ok thanks. So the girls haven't just decided on pink then. Ds not keen on pink. He wouldn't read through the pages and pages of messages. I would...I'm nosy.

GoldenRuby · 28/08/2019 21:41

I've tried to attach a screen shot showing the colours the different accommodation areas are encouraged to wear at the first event. Hope you can see it.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 21:45

@GoldenRuby thanks for that. Where are you seeing this. We couldn't see anything much about freshers. Is this info you get after registering?

juicy0 · 28/08/2019 21:49

@GoldenRuby where are you seeing this info please?

OP posts:
GoldenRuby · 28/08/2019 22:01

If you google UEA Welcome Fest, you get to the Student Union site where you can buy the wristbands for the freshers activities (DS used my IPad to book his, so I could help him if he needed it). It gives the event listings.

juicy0 · 28/08/2019 22:08

Thank you @GoldenRuby DD bought a wristband but hadn't seen all the details so I'm really pleased you posted - pink it is!
No details on what to wear for the ball so do we assume it's a black tie event?

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 22:12

@GoldenRuby yes. Thanks for that. I'm not buying ds a suit. So the ball will be out for him. But I think there's other events at the same time.

GoldenRuby · 28/08/2019 22:21

There is no info on the dress code for the Welcome Ball. DS has his Y11 prom suit (navy blue lounge suit, not black tie) - it is a bit tight these days but will take it with him in case he needs one.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 22:32

@GoldenRuby yes same for my ds. The year 11 prom jacket is too tight. He had another prom in 6th form but they could wear smart trousers and shirt for that one. Thankfully no suit.

boys3 · 28/08/2019 22:32

@icanbewhatiwant DS2 also in the pink crew :)

Judging from previous years the Welcome Ball looks to be dress code free, which if true is probably a lot more inclusive.

CointreauVersial · 28/08/2019 23:29

Thanks all for the information on what's needed for opening bank accounts - I'm sure we can assemble the necessary bits and pieces. And good to know she has to wear white for the event on the 22nd - that's easy enough!

We have Saturday arrival, which is a bit of a relief, as we are off to Spain first thing on Sunday (didn't really think it through before booking tickets....). We are about 3 hours away (well, Norwich is one of those places that takes longer to get to than you expect), but won't leave it too late, as I probably won't have given any thought to my own packing.

Just need to finish the registration process - I'm getting a bit irritated with DD1's lack of engagement at the moment. I have told her that, now she's 18, if she fails to register/sign-up/turn up for anything, it won't be me they come after, it will be her, and I'm trying to ease the administrative burden by helping her with as much as I can over the next three weeks. The bank account application is only half done, and she has given no thought about what to bring. Still hasn't given notice at her job ( I reminded her that she's going to rely on their good references at some point). Grrr

NotSorry · 29/08/2019 07:17

Finally got accommodation offer - Paston House - going to sit and do all the registration and accommodation acceptance today and decide what he wants to do about freshers week - he got accepted by HSBC just waiting for paperwork so we can update Student Finance.

sluj · 29/08/2019 07:37

DS1 said the Welcome Ball is informal and wear what you like but I'll ask him to check.

sluj · 29/08/2019 07:42

Having said that, his school had a more formal Christmas ball so if your DC wont be back till Christmas, it might be worth taking that kind of stuff.
I've sent a message to UEA SU to ask about the dress code and will let you know.
Laptop shopping this afternoon and IKEA on Saturday Smile

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/08/2019 07:43

Well done for getting everything sorted @NotSorry.

Yes, I've still not got a definitive answer from DS about Freshers' Week. I may try to coax him into getting at least one event ticket but think the whole caboodle will not be his thing. Ha, if he does go to the event you've been alluding to, he will wear blue (not difficult!).

I do think that our DC are probably a bit in denial at this point in time.

sluj · 29/08/2019 07:51

DS is in blue too though cant see why he should have to wear a specific colour Hmm
He is lucky though, DS1had to wear fancy dress beginning with his initials, so Gary the Gladiator, Mark the Monk, etc.
Blue seems quite easy by comparison.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/08/2019 07:52

@NotSorry my ds is Paston house too. Do you know number? So far there is one boy on Facebook chat and lots of girls.

Does anyone know whether a standard fitted sheet will fit the beds? They are 3" longer than a standard single. I'd like to put on a mattress protector, they are all fitted. I'm assuming the mattress will not be as deep as ours at home...so maybe will stretch over.

NotSorry · 29/08/2019 07:56

Icanbewhatiwant we haven’t got that far yet, only got the offer yesterday when I was at work - sitting down with him today to sort everything- will update later

icanbewhatiwant · 29/08/2019 08:03

@NotSorry ok thanks. Everyone else seems to be getting on with registration. Only my ds is getting a blank page.
His work hours have gone up as they are busy. He had to start at 7.30am. He finished at 7pm last night. So not a lot of time to get things sorted. I've asked him to try to nip to HSBC with ID today. But he doesn't think he will have time. He gets 30 mins for lunch which isn't long enough to get into town and back.
He's off weekends, that isn't helpful for the bank or calling UEA if he still can't fill in the forms.

MarchingFrogs · 29/08/2019 08:14

IKEA sell fitted single (90cm) sheets in both 190cm (standard UK) and 200cm (European) lengths.
