I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 DD had a read of the module section section but it looks so complicated! Do they need to do that before they move in or could it wait until they're there so you think? I couldn't see a deadline but I'll get her to have a look tomorrow if she has time before work.

I couldn't work out whether they need to choose all their optional modules for the next three years (surely not???) @juicy0. Somehow the 27th September springs to mind as the cut off for module choices, so you are right that they could probably wait until they are at UEA before deciding.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 27/08/2019 21:25

DD has done her photo registration bit but no info re course etc-seems very inconsistent??

icanbewhatiwant · 27/08/2019 21:57

Is this module thing all subjects or just some? DS says they have to do them all for biology. But as he can't fill the registration forms in at the moment he's yet to find out.

GoldenRuby · 27/08/2019 22:07

DS doesn't seem to have to select modules for his course. I think all of the different sport / physical activity courses have the a common first year though, so it may be that they only get choices once in Yr 2.

juicy0 · 28/08/2019 08:14

I've just been reading on another thread that many unis have given drop off slots for moving in day. Has anyone had any info re timings from UEA?
Had a nice chat with DD while we were relaxing at the beach yesterday. Overall ah feel ready for uni and isn't worried about the cooking/shopping/washing etc. She said she almost wishes she was moving in this weekend as she's been talking to the other people in her flat and it would like to just 'get on with it' before she has a chance to feel anxious about making friends, navigating her way around and settling into uni life.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 08:47

@juicy0 yes I wondered the same thing. It just says 22nd on the email. As DS hasn't finished the registration email we are behind everyone else anyway. Maybe we will get time slots nearer the date.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 11:47

Well DS and one of us will be arriving via coach on the day, so I am jolly well hoping that there are not designated time-slots. I'm pretty confident that there was no mention of such in the initial accommodation email, so let's hope it's one of those things that varies from uni to uni (as with UEA being totally anti soft furnishings which doesn't necessarily seem to be the case at other places).

Itscoldouthere · 28/08/2019 12:52

“Anti soft furnishings” 🤣
My DS won’t even notice 🤣🤣

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 13:13

Probably more of an issue for girls than for boys, I would have thought @Itscoldouthere!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 28/08/2019 13:15

Am confused by "anti soft furnishings" ??

Because DD def missed that memo?

CointreauVersial · 28/08/2019 13:23

DD1 is trying to sort out her bank account, and it is asking for a copy of her "official" offer letter from UEA. What would that be?? She had an email on results day, saying Welcome, and there was possibly something on Track....?

sluj · 28/08/2019 13:42

Have a look at Ask UEA on the UEA website. By soft furnishings they mean, beanbags, etc rather than cushions.
DS went for his meningitis jab to find that the nurse says he already had it. Why the receptionist couldn't see that same thing when we asked her to look 3 weeks ago I dont know Hmm

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 13:46

@Itscoldouthere no my ds wouldn't notice either!
@CointreauVersial my son is setting up with HSBC they have only asked for ucas number so far. He needs to pop into our nearest branch with ID too. Which he apparently has no time to do (working 8am-6pm mon/fri)
They did ask for annual income too. He just put down what he will earn over the summer. I didn't think of the loan coming in.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 14:15

It's in the accommodation contract @mumsiedarlingrevolta. No rugs, no floor cushions, no fairy lights (although assuming that means plug-in ones), no posters on walls with blu-tac...

@CointreauVersial, yes it would be the 'welcome' email from the university (in this case UEA). Plus she needs the four or 16 digit number that's visible on the UCAS (student) home page (titled: Opening a student bank account?).

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 14:26

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 my son was only asked for UCAS number. I did say I'd seen on here (on other thread) there was another number. But so far not been asked for it.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 14:50

Lots of these things seem to depend on which bank one's DC is applying to. DS did his (HSBC) online, submitted the 16 digit number (within his UCAS account), didn't have to submit the confirmation of place letter or go into a local branch for any reason. That said, he's had his debit card through the post but not his pin number as yet.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 15:21

Ds applied with HSBC too.

juicy0 · 28/08/2019 15:30

DD went for HSBC too and has received her card etc but did have to pop into branch with ID docs (she needed an appointment to do so but it didn't say that on the letter 🙄)

OP posts:
icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 16:04

@juicy0 I went into HSBC to ask if ds needed appointment as he didn't want to take time off work to find he needed appointment. They said not.

boys3 · 28/08/2019 17:53

others may know better but it appears that arrival "slot" is a defined day - so Sat 21st or Sun 22nd - as opposed to a specific time on the day.

portal.uea.ac.uk/new-students/undergraduates/registering-online has uni residence key collection as being between 10:00 and 17:00 each day. This tallies with what DS2 has heard from DCs in his old school year group who started at UEA last September.

DS2 is a Sunday arrival, we have around a 2.5 hr journey to get to Norwich, so if there is nothing more specific that 10:00 to 17:00 now wondering when might be best to arrive. Could be an early start to arrive for 10:00, or perhaps an excuse for staying in / close to Norwich the night before and having a nice meal out somewhere.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/08/2019 18:34

@boys3 that sounds about right given that no-one seems to have been given a short, time-specific arrival slot. I guess they must be working on theory (presumably from experience) that new students will turn up across the seven hour time span allocated for arrivals.

Wonder if it's like school, that those who live closest often turn up last?

icanbewhatiwant · 28/08/2019 19:16

We live about 50 mins away. Not planning to be last 🤣

GoldenRuby · 28/08/2019 19:28

We are 2.5/3 hours drive away. Assuming we aren't allocated a slot I don't think we need to leave at the crack of dawn. I will get DS to ask his flat mates what time they are planning on arriving - I don't think he wants to sit there for hours on his own, but equally doesn't want to miss out if he arrives later than everyone and they go out exploring. DD is keen to come with us to drop him off (assuming she will fit in the car with all of his stuff) so we will grab a pub lunch somewhere I expect - but just not sure at this stage if that with be with DS or not.

MarchingFrogs · 28/08/2019 20:02

www.redlionkenninghall.co.uk/

DD and I stayed overnight here before a UEA open day last summer. It was very hot and we didn't fancy doing much wandering around the village, just had a meal and a drink at the pub and collapsed on our respective beds. They serve a decent pint and the food (including the full English) was good, too.
