Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

Another one here with a ds going to UEA. It was his insurance place and we didn't know until later yesterday when Nottingham finally rejected him. He seems very happy. We don't know about accommodation yet but he has had an email today saying he will get an accommodation offer on Monday and will have 2 days in which to accept.

Regarding freshers week - dd went to university 4 years ago and she was very worried about freshers week as she was not a party animal. She had never been to a club, didn't really go out much in the evenings but there were still plenty of things for her to enjoy and to help her to meet new friends.

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 20:05

I've just tried to set up a new thread for UEA posts but I don't know how to link it, sorry.

SoonerthanIthought · 16/08/2019 20:06

Piggy, freshers week can be a bit of an issue for some students - the absolutely vital message to convey to ds is not to worry if he doesn't enjoy it! That can apply to quite a few students - the shy, the not so good at group jollity, maybe the non-drinkers (though tbf not all events require alcohol consumption), the ones who aren't good at immediate-friend-making but take longer to get going, and those who dont immediately gel with their flat mates. Annoying for those students, but c'est la vie.
I think it's not uncommon to want to come home during fw! And then find that you're quite happy 4-5 weeks in.

Imv it might be better to go straight into lectures rather than a week of events, but that doesn't happen. It's good to go to some of the things, and above all join some societies, but do tell your ds that if he doesn't enjoy it, things will improve!

GoldenRuby · 16/08/2019 20:09

Excellent, well done @juicy0 !

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 20:09

Hopefully this is a link to the thread. @mumsiedarlingrevolta @NewModelArmyMayhem18 @GoldenRuby @sluj and any other UEA parents

LIZS, certainly not for DD's course. She particularly checked with department before applying, as she was considering a gap year at that stage.

Dare I ask about much the freshers entry events thing is? Maybe, that's why she hasn't said anything, as we hae car problems and either very expensive repair or new car which we didn't anticipate.

LIZS · 16/08/2019 20:18

No idea tbh. It varies from one uni to another. Dd has yet to get her head around not going to firm.

olliepolly · 16/08/2019 20:21

LIZS my DD1 will be manning a stall at edi freshers going in to year 3 .
What are your dds accom choices. My DD1 had a great year in pollock at grant house highly recommended. DD2 got her results yesterday and is off to Bristol. Me I’m exhausted !

LIZS · 16/08/2019 20:25

Pollock were the first two, beyond that can't recall! We took advice on options from a friend's dds who had recently graduated but aware insurance candidates have least choice in the end.

Decorhate · 16/08/2019 20:30

Re Freshers week, I agree it won’t be easy for many and can hinder them settling in quickly. At least dd had lots of departmental sessions to fill the days. Ds will have two 45 minute sessions. I appreciate there will be evening activities but what are they supposed to do all day. Sleep?

If your dc is going to buy a wristband, make sure they are not conned into getting the wrong one. There are lots on FB for ds’ uni which are not the official SU ones.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 20:37

@icanbewhatiwant @juicy0 has just set up a UEA thread!! hurrah

See link a few posts above.

DD has accommodation because she had an unconditional and accepted as was he first choice. So she was allocated her accommodation before offers went out.
Come join us!!

FrameyMcFrame · 16/08/2019 20:40

Dunlurking, just saw your post.
Sorry to hear your dd is going through a tough time.

I'm also worried about dd at York and whether she will like it as it's not as much if a party city as Sheffield or Leeds...

We will be at the open day! Fingers crossed she will love it as it is what she's accepted now!

SoonerthanIthought · 16/08/2019 20:45

I think there are certainly some party people at york - they go into the city for clubbing and bars. I agree it hasn't got quite the same 'northern clubbing university' reputation as some of them, but the keen partyers should be ok!

FrameyMcFrame · 16/08/2019 20:51

Seems like there's a few of us with dc heading to York, should we have a thread too?

Piggywaspushed · 16/08/2019 20:51

York is not a clubbing place but it is most certainly a drinking place!

Dunlurking · 16/08/2019 20:52

Thanks @FrameyMcFrame. Have a good day Tuesday. Dd doesn't want to go to the open day for a variety of reasons. Think she's still in mourning for Sheffield and not quite ready to fall in love with York yet. Has your dd's accommodation come through? Thanks for those comments SoonerthanIthought

FrameyMcFrame · 16/08/2019 21:01

She just checked and has got Vanbrugh!!

Hope that's a good one?

I did hours of research on Sheffield accommodation then we picked these out in 3 minutes

It's a bit frustrating
But I hope it all works out ok....

ifonly4 · 16/08/2019 21:22

LIZS and Olliepolly my DD also applied for Pollock. She's said she'll share a room to save money, that might go in her favour.

LIZS My DD had her heart set on firm, but coming around to the positives of Edinburgh. It was a tough day yesterday, being the first of her friends in two schools to get her grades, finding she'd missed her firm, then three calls to St Andrews who she felt were quite abrupt. Having a bit of a wobbly over catered halls, I guess it's only natural to question which decision is right.

JennyWreny · 16/08/2019 21:22

My DD is also going to York after missing her firm choice (Bath).

She is in Vanbrugh as well. I've been trying to find out a bit more about it and it seems to be one of the most popular. It's also very central which is nice.

sky111 · 16/08/2019 21:22

Congratulations to all. It is lovely to read your stories.

My DS will be doing his A levels next year. Has anyone got good notes, tuition handouts for AQA biology, OCR chemistry and OCR MEI maths? PM with details. THANKS

Mustbetimeforachange · 16/08/2019 21:25

It's weird how this thread is mainly to do with a handful of universities!

Piggywaspushed · 16/08/2019 21:32

Vanbrugh's where I went ! #VanbrughtilIdie

Grin
mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 21:34

@Mustbetimeforachange it is. the UEA mums have now set up a thread to not highjack this one...

justasking111 · 16/08/2019 21:36

Anyone off to Leeds?

MrsBartlet · 16/08/2019 21:36

I went to York as well (albeit 30 years ago) and had a great time. Probably did a bit too much going out while I was at York!
