Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

All his friends were in other flats and the bonus meant he was able to study- although Im not sure he always liked that! He even went for breakfast at a friends flat Smile

Mustbetimeforachange · 16/08/2019 17:56

Yes, DS1 had nothing to do with his flatmates after the first few days. One he only saw 3 or 4 times. DS2's first choice was catered which I thought would be good for him, but his insurance (the one he's going to) is self catering.

Horsemad · 16/08/2019 17:56

@Alicatz66 - both great places! 🙂

LosingHerMissMarbles · 16/08/2019 17:59

Clankboing Scarecrowhead, Bh2579 Fozzley Plum Just seen your posts. I have a physicist DS going into 3rd year at Lancaster. He loves the university and especially the department. If you have any questions please do ask and we'll be happy to try and answer.
(Not stalking the thread I promise. I have another one coming through so I'm always interested to read what experiences are like from year to year.)

@Dunlurking. York campus is lovely. Yes, it was built in the 60s but the amount of green space is unbelievable. Huge lake in the middlle, wildlife wandering through and loads of tree-lined walkways. It has a really relaxed and warm feel about it. DS will be studying biological sciences and the facilities and labs were the best we saw. The staff from the academics to the refectory staff were fab. It is a true campus university so outside of York but the shuttle bus takes about ten minutes. It’s easily cyclable or walkable. DS is going to be in James College and fully catered for first year. He’s really happy as it was his number one choice. Up until the visit day it was second to Leeds. I don’t think your daughter will be disappointed.

ZandathePanda · 16/08/2019 18:10

Also liked York. It was Dd’s Insurance. Very friendly.

Dunlurking · 16/08/2019 18:11

Thanks for the feedback on the campus @dazzlingdeborahrose. Looking forward to taking her there in October. Doesn't look like we're going to the Clearing/Adjustment open day next week. Best of luck to your ds in James college. Dd has just announced she wants to take her bike. It will be so nice for her to have somewhere safe to cycle. We live in a rural area where the roads are lethal for cyclists.

Horsemad · 16/08/2019 18:13

Is it York that has a newer campus as well? Remember someone going and saying it was lovely but a bit 'bare' re greenery as the landscaping hadn't grown up at that point.

Dunlurking · 16/08/2019 18:17

Horsemad when my ds was applying for uni a few years back I remember mumsnetters scoring campuses for birds and wildlife, and birdshit. I think York was up there at the top because of all the ducks/waterbirds etc in the lake/ponds.

Piggywaspushed · 16/08/2019 18:21

When I was at York, each college had a formal Christmas dinner at which duck was served. The rumour always was they were from the lake!

Horsemad · 16/08/2019 18:22

Hahaha Piggy! 😆

Dunlurking · 16/08/2019 18:25

@Piggywaspushed Shock

@mumsiedarlingrevolta @NewModelArmyMayhem18 @NotSorry I wonder if any of us or our DC will end up
meeting?

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 18:35

@GoldenRuby @Nextphonewontbesamsung sorry, I didn't read down the thread far enough before posting 🙈
I didn't realise there were so many UEA families on here. @sluj is your DC going to UEA too?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 18:36

@juicy0 @NewModelArmyMayhem18 @NotSorry
would be lovely as long as none of the encounters end up on AIBU...

DD was shocked at the cost of the Freshers wristband!!!!

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 18:37

@GoldenRuby I wonder if our DD have already been talking? My DD has unconditional so accommodation was confirmed last month and she has also been chatting with three others in her flat.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 18:38

oooops cross posted- didn't mean to leave you out
@GoldenRuby @Nextphonewontbesamsung we can def meet in the bar Wink

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 18:39

@mumsiedarlingrevolta yes my DD thought the wristbands were expensive too. I suppose the danger of not buying one is that they miss out on the first big socials if separate tickets aren't available?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 18:39

@juicy0 @GoldenRuby

what accommodation are your DD's in?

DD has been chatting to flatmates too

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/08/2019 18:41

@juicy0
She is going to get it-my third DC at Uni and it will be "well used" I will pay as she is still waiting for her Boardmasters refund and is skint!!

Mykingdomforanickname · 16/08/2019 18:43

Can anyone reassure me on the following point? My DS got the Track message yesterday saying "Congratulations! Your place at [name of university] has been confirmed." In his case, it was his insurance place. (He didn't get the grades for his firm.) My understanding is that in those circumstances, there is no need to click anything on UCAS to accept the place. I have been slightly panicked by a Facebook group on which someone suggested you needed to accept the place within 5 days or you would lose it, but from what I can see on the UCAS website, the need to accept within 5 days only applies where a university has offered a place on a different course from the one the student applied for. Please can someone confirm! (Sorry if this has already been covered upthread. I have read large sections of the thread, but not all of it.)

GoldenRuby · 16/08/2019 18:43

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 DS is in the Village (Willow). Has only found a couple of other people in the building so far, but not his flat. Is now on a course group chat on messenger though.

AnnieDianaLulu · 16/08/2019 18:49

Hey, I think I posted a while ago now, but I got accepted into my uni and I'm really excited, I'm 20, so a little bit behind but I'm really pleased I got where I wanted. I'm going to be doing Biology!

78percentLindt · 16/08/2019 18:49

For those heading for Nottingham- it is worth taking or getting a bike. It is a great place for cyclists with loads of cycle paths all over the city although there are good deals on trams and buses via Mango etc. DS finished his Masters there in the spring and still hasn't bothered to learn to drive.
Catered halls were fine - DS opted for them as he was a fairly newly identified dyslexic and the learning support somewhere suggested life would be easier if he didn't have to worry about catering. Unless things have changed, catered at Nottingham covers lunches on campus as well and he found that the ladies on the till were keen that he spent his entire daily allowance- often pressing a piece of fruit on him if he was under the budget.

flyingspaghettimonster · 16/08/2019 18:51

Congrats everyone on the excellent results, and fingers crossed anyone who didn't make their first choice finds somewhere good on clearing. It's been eye opening reading this... it never occurred to me to try clearing when I was doing A levels. My husband got AAAAB, and Cambridge rejected him. He wouldn't be where he is today, a stem cell research scientist at an ivy league US uni, if he hadn't taken his 2nd. Choice at UCL. He had no idea what he wanted to specialize in so picked different scientific subjects at each uni on his list. So for anyone not getting their first choice, might turn out the second was better!
