Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

@ZandathePanda DH's home city but DS didn't like it. He's not a party animal.

I think Liverpool and Newcastle are very similar. 🙂

howwudufeel · 15/08/2019 22:05

I know Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle well and they are all brilliant cities.

Witchend · 15/08/2019 22:19

We're a good 5 hours from Durham and DD isn't planning on coming home except for holidays. But then I only went home once in 4 years except holidays and I was a direct train journey.
But the not being able to nip home does make it feel a bit harder. I think she'll love it once she's there.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/08/2019 22:29

DD is still disappointed with her grades, but happy with her first choice uni acceptance.

She was initially bitterly disappointed - and quite confused. She got an A in Welsh Bacc and was expecting that. But the one subject she'd been expecting to maybe only get a B in was the one she got really great marks inc an A for one of the papers so an overall A.

The two other subjects she was expecting As or A*s (and had been predicted them and had achieved them in AS levels and mocks) were the ones she came out with Bs for. Tears over a grade C for Nazi Germany paper. She's 2 marks from a B in that paper and one for Psychology and we are going to take her tutors' advice on whether to pursue a remark, but she will be unlikely to gain enough UMS to get an overall A so probably not.

Room allocation has come through from York, although we are struggling with the website and it won't load easily and timed out half way through reading the very looooong tenancy agreement. She has her en suite but it's a 38 week let. It makes it a bit cheaper for her, but she'll have to vacate it completely for the Easter hols. No biggie.

We are happy she's a lot closer to home than Cambridge would have been. And we have booked the travelodge we stayed at on the Open day for the day she will be dropping her stuff at uni to make it less of a rush and more worth going all that way. :) Very convenient!

mum2eim · 15/08/2019 22:32

@Benjispruce St Johns. Which college for your DC?

Re Manchester and the countryside - it's an hour to the lakes or Snowdonia and just at the edge of the Peak district. Maybe I see an hour as being close! It is a huge city but the student bit of it is so close to the city centre. I remember walking in for nights out it was so close.

I probably have rose tinted glasses looking back at Uni life!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/08/2019 22:34

Just a little over 2 hours from home for us, depending on traffic.

Cambridge was theoretically 3 and a half, but always took more like 5 due to traffic. So secretly I wasn't looking forward to her being there. And I would have worried about the level of stress she'd have been under in the shorter term and higher level of pressure there.

I'm hoping she meets fellow minded young people, comes out of her shell a little and has a great time! And if she can socialise just a little bit, even better.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/08/2019 22:37

Any advice about best accommodation at Newcastle? I know DS hasn’t applied yet but he has exceeded the entry requirements for his subject so am hoping he’ll get a place.

Sunflowers211 · 15/08/2019 22:37

Good evening all, not sure what's going on with Mumsnet this evening but I was logged out, not able to log in, reset password, so had to make another account up.

I posted this morning about my son not meeting his Conditional Offer at Durham, he needed A* AA.

Got to college to find he had passed and met all the requirements for Durham and the extra technicality's attached. My son rang Durham who confirmed he had passed but was asked to ring UCAS to sort their error out. So DS rings UCAS who were quite frankly shocking, and told him nothing they could do about THEIR mistake, and he had to go through clearing to get his place at Durham which he had already met the required grades for!!! Literally spent hours trying to sort this, son was understandably upset, but had email from Durham apologising and congratulating him on his place!

Still not updated on UCAS track, so I hope no one else has been messed about by UCAS like my son has.

Congratulations to all our kids, no matter what the results, they have all worked incredibly hard, and I wish them all the best of luck on the future journeys.

As for UCAS, 🤬🤬🤬🤬

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/08/2019 22:40

Newcastle is miles away for us ( SW) but at least there are flights.

mum2eim · 15/08/2019 22:47

@Sunflowers211that sound horrific! It was so stressful getting results anyway but then to be messed around like that by UCAS. Thank goodness Durham were helpful.

Good luck for your DS at Durham!

Sunflowers211 · 15/08/2019 22:48

@Witchend Durham is fantastic!

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 23:04

LaBelle DS was in Verde (1st yr uni accommodation) and then Oxford House (private halls).

Castle Leazes is meant to be Party Central from what I've heard.

boys3 · 15/08/2019 23:14

didn’t get either his firm or insurance but I told him he should be proud of himself regardless

Congratulations to all our kids, no matter what the results, they have all worked incredibly hard, and I wish them all the best of luck on the future journeys

can I just echo these lovely sentiments. Huge congrats to all for getting through this slog which our exam system largely seems to have become.

Whilst we had the..........pleasure Hmm .........of results day last year, and DS2 has had his place confirmed (another for UEA) for quite a few months, I think today it became really real for him. He even took me out for coffee.

Witchend · 15/08/2019 23:16

@Sunflowers211 Glad you got it sorted. That's dreadful from UCAS because that's partially what they're there for-to make sure all is fair.
Dd loved Durham when she went there, but I think she thought she was realistically looking at her insurance (which she was totally happy with) so it's taken a bit to get her head round it.
Dd's mostly nervous about the distance, but it's a big step for her as she's a bit of a home girl.
I did chuckle though this evening. She's in a self-catering college. Asked her to get something out of the oven and she said "I don't like getting things out of the oven. It's too hot". This could be a bit awkward 😂

Sunflowers211 · 15/08/2019 23:25

@Witchend oh she sounds just like my son, had to explain what a teapot was not long ago, and wondered why he was using an oven glove to get something out the freezer!
Luckily we live in Co Durham so he is not staying in Halls, although I'm sure it would horrify him the thought of cooking!

Hope your DD enjoys Durham, beautiful city with very friendly people. What course is she studying? My DS is doing Theoretical Physics.

Rosieposy4 · 15/08/2019 23:25

Sunflowers, what an awful, story, glad you have it sorted
DS is into his first choice he did drop to AAB but they are still having him so all good.

Sunflowers211 · 15/08/2019 23:26

@mum2eim Thank you!❤️

Sunflowers211 · 15/08/2019 23:36

Aww Thank You @Rosieposy4 congratulations to your DS, so stressful for them today. I literally looked at my son and saw how despondent and upset he had come from getting the incorrect notification on Track, to going in realising he had aced his exams and still was not sure if he had got his place.

AtiaoftheJulii · 15/08/2019 23:57

Congrats to your dd Witchend, really pleased for her!

Ds is off to Manchester too, he really liked it on his two visits so I'm hoping it lives up to expectations.

Dd2 is at Newcastle and I have completely fallen in love with the city, as has she. She was in Park Terrace in her first year which was very nice.

AtiaoftheJulii · 15/08/2019 23:58

Sunflowers What an awful story, glad it got sorted out today and didn't prolong the agony further.

minesawine · 16/08/2019 08:01

Just woke up , still exhausted after yesterday. So many posts to read. Where did everyones DC's end up going. My DS is going to Nottingham Trent to study Business Management and Economics.

Ragwort · 16/08/2019 08:05

Mine I think our DSs will be on the same course Grin. Has your DS chosen the 4 year course with the year in industry? I wonder if they will meet up, my DS is always horrified if I mention something I have read on Mumsnet!

FrameyMcFrame · 16/08/2019 08:06

Sunflowers that is horrendous. So sorry but glad it's all ok now.

Still, how stressful!

We had a disappointing time when Dd opened track to see she had been declined from her first choice. We both thought she must've got v low grades but then once we got to school we were shocked and surprised to see she had only missed it by one!

Rollercoaster of emotions!!

How is everyone feeling this morning? I'm utterly spent!

howwudufeel · 16/08/2019 08:07

Well done to your ds minesawine.
