Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

Gah I meant Ds of course ... bloody phone always changes it to Dd

Dunlurking · 15/08/2019 20:50

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 thank you. Sorry your ds didn't get the Durham place but glad to hear he's got the UEA place sorted.

Very interesting to hear about the low numbers of high grades. I got that impression from dd's school as well - a grammar school also but not a great one. She was supposed to be one of the best girls in her class in her C grade subject, Environmental Science. No one in the class got higher than a C I understand. The nature of the new exam changed radically from the old with no warning, and contrary to everything expected. I'm wondering if they actually couldn't change the grade boundaries sufficiently to compensate. Did someone said that they actually aren't allowed to change by more than 5% from the previous year's?

sluj · 15/08/2019 20:51

Welcome to the UEA crew newmodel, your DS will love it. I think there are one or two of our DC heading that way.

DS1 is just about to go into year 4 there and I feel confident all our DC will love it.
I hope everyone gets a better sleep tonight. I could do with one but DS is planning on a late night out to celebrate his 18th/results today so I probably wont get a great night. The whole town is buzzing with 18 year olds apparently Smile

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 20:53

According to the media, top grades are down this year so it does seem to follow. Ironically, the subject with loads of As and A*s is maths! Perhaps Edexcel overcompensated...

Benjispruce · 15/08/2019 20:56

As this is my eldest DC and we didn’t experience uni, how often do they tend to come home? Durham is a good 3 to 4 hr drive . Confused

TapasForTwo · 15/08/2019 20:58

Anyone's DC going to Newcastle?

NotSorry · 15/08/2019 21:04

Good to hear the sluj we’re going to look at UEA tomorrow but I think DS2 has pretty much decided he’s going to accept it

Interesting feedback about all the grades etc. DS2 got maths A, physics B, economics C - didn’t get either his firm or insurance but I told him he should be proud of himself regardless

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/08/2019 21:05

How long is a piece of string Benji? My elder two were fairly local (45 minutes or so) and popped home all the time, maybe every couple of weeks for the odd night. DC3 is much further away and only comes home in the holidays.

Cost of travel will be a factor too.

Benjispruce · 15/08/2019 21:08

Thanks. She doesn’t plan to come back other than hols and is quite good at being away, always has gone off happily on school trips etc. Unlike DD2 who is a home body like me.

MrKlaw · 15/08/2019 21:13

If my DS goes for Bath that’s almost direct on the train or an easy 90 minute drive. far enough away for him to be independent but close enough that he can come home easily enough if needed so shouldn’t feel isolated

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 21:17

@TapasForTwo my DS is already at Newcastle. It's a great city and a great uni too.

ifonly4 · 15/08/2019 21:17

As expected some ups and downs, but hopefully whatever comes from today, it takes them on to a great life. I think my DD was one of the first to know her results and uni on here. She's over initial disappointment, and seeing more positives in her insurance than firm. I think it helped when she realised she wasn't the only one going through the same thing.

Don't know about about others, but very tired here - lack of sleep last night, long car journey to school and then other problems this afternoon haven't helped.

mum2eim · 15/08/2019 21:18

@benjispruce the email from college has come in with the questionnaire for rooms etc. so that’s a relief. We are also 3-4hrs away from Durham so no idea how often we will see DD.
I’ll be up at 530am tomorrow to take DD to the airport to go back to work! She’s busy getting stuff together.
@WorriedMutha she will love Manchester. It’s such a vibrant city and so close to countryside as well. I went there and loved it. She’ll have so much time to enjoy uni life!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/08/2019 21:19

Tapas - DS is having a gap year and applying in the autumn but his top choice by a long way is Newcastle. I haven't heard it mentioned on this thread yet.

Stitchintimesaves9 · 15/08/2019 21:19

@tapasfortwo Yes! My DS. MEng in Chemical Engineering. So pleased for him!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/08/2019 21:22

Oops - apart from by Horsemad!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/08/2019 21:32

Laniakea thanks for your comments.

Yes, clearly there have been some anomalous results this year at some schools, including our DCs'.

DS said there were boys and girls crying at their results at his school.

Your DD suffers with exam nerves. Hoping she has chosen a course that plays to her strengths. My DS does not do well at coursework. Hoping he's not chosen a degree that is mainly controlled assessments/coursework (off to check).

We will probably get one of DS's history papers remarked as he is close to A boundary for the subject. No need for a priority remark though now.

Thanks @Sluj. Ds in a really good mood so thinking he his happy with his UCAS outcome. All we can hope for really.

"It’s such a vibrant city and so close to countryside as well."

Manchester is huge. Living just outside Sheffield I wouldn't class Manchester as being that close to countryside. DD looked at Manchester, but was put off it by its size. Also, she had already fallen in love with Newcastle.

berlinbabylon · 15/08/2019 21:42

I think Manchester is THE place to be a student (although if I had my time again I would go to Liverpool).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/08/2019 21:42

I once wrote an article about Manchester (a place I've only been the once). It seems to be a bit like London - not so much a city as a conurbation.

OP posts:
berlinbabylon · 15/08/2019 21:44

That is true, but I remember visiting a friend who was at uni there and I thought it was amazing for students.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/08/2019 21:47

One of mine went to Liverpool and one to Manchester. They are fiercely partisan about which city is the best.

ZandathePanda · 15/08/2019 21:53

Tinkly Neither because the best city is Newcastle!WinkGrin

Benjispruce · 15/08/2019 21:54

Which college mum?
