Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

@Sunflowers211 (hope that’s the right name :)) my ds has just been accepted at Durham for theoretical physics as well! What college is he in? Ds has Hild Bede .. which quite frankly is a dump, but he isn’t bothered 😆

TapasForTwo · 16/08/2019 08:13

@LaBelleSauvage123 I think you will need to contact the university here to see what accommodation is available. Castle Leazes does have a party reputation, and is looking a little tired and frayed round the edges. I think CL is the only catered accommodation they offer. Park View is the newest and is very close to the medical school.

Student Roost also has accommodation.

Failing that have a look at The Student Room for advice.

LIZS · 16/08/2019 08:15

@FrameyMcFrame dd was same here. We assumed from track and a "thanks but no thanks" email, that she'd missed her offer significantly but turned out to be by only the one grade. School have tried to advocate but no luck. At least she has their support to steer her, it sounds as if this is lacking for many others. Instead of feeling elated that her efforts and dedication produced a very good set of allround results and is solid for her insurance, she's blaming herself for underachieving and what might have been. A very emotional and muted day.

slalomsuki · 16/08/2019 08:22

DS was really down yesterday missing his first choice by 1 grade and settling for his insurance. We did call first choice but they wouldn't budge so he has had to accept what has happened.

What's worse for him is his girlfriend got in to his first choice and he will now be 100 miles apart. I've tried to put a positive spin on it and talked about date weekends but to no avail. He told me they talked about splitting up yesterday which is sad as they are actually good for each other.

He was so down about it he didn't want to go out last night. He did in the end but I'm sad that he is sad at what should be the start of his next big journey and don't know how to help him see it in a positive light.

Gettingthroughtheweek · 16/08/2019 08:23

Still feeling in limbo waiting for remarks here. Main problem is DS feels the grades given were unfair, as he was getting consistently higher grades all year and felt the papers had gone well, and he’s feeling it with the full force of a teenager’s sense of injustice - so even though he has a v good insurance option I fear he may fail to engage. He feels he doesn’t want to go through life with grades that say he was best at his worst subject .... Hopefully the shock will wear off, and he will be more forward looking, but atm it’s all rather deflating.

Benjispruce · 16/08/2019 08:32

mum DD is at Collingwood,Durham.
Sunflowers that was an awful error and so glad you got it sorted.
I am exhausted, only just woken up. DD hit the town last night and I Hope is over her disappointment with her fabulous grades. It’s tricky to know what to say when they meet the grade requirements for their first choice which happens to be a top uni and there are tears.Confused

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 08:33

Feeling exhausted this morning as I stayed up until 3am to pick DC up from a club where they were all celebrating, I'd been awake since 5 😵
DC is going to UEA for Geography. She was disappointed not to get an A* in geog yesterday, she's 6 marks off and has been advised it's unlikely a remark will result in an increase that big with CIE, does anyone have any positive remark stories? Otherwise she was thrilled to pull her bio grade up to an A and satisfied with a C in chemistry, a subject she has struggled with and hated for 2 years!!
We are local to Norwich so if anyone has any questions about the UEA I'm happy to help.
Good luck to those still trying to firm decisions today x

Benjispruce · 16/08/2019 08:39

Juicy have you seen the other thread about dropped marks. OP is about coursework but lots of stories about remarks-some successful. My DD got a fab 8 in GCSE maths and without her knowledge the school got a remark as she was 2 off a 9 and it went up. We are waiting on 2 remarks for Biology and English as 1 mark off an A in Biology and 1 off an A* in English . School paying as so close. Good luck.

Benjispruce · 16/08/2019 08:40

Ours are non urgent as got 1st choice.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 16/08/2019 08:53

Tapas - he’s applying for 2020 so hasn’t actually got a place yet - I was just looking for info in advance really. Thanks for all the links - will have a look. He will definitely want self catered as cooking is one of his main interests.

scarecrowhead · 16/08/2019 09:05

Anyone's dc going to Lancaster ?

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 09:10

benjispruce no I haven't seen that thread but thank you for the tip off, I'll see if I can find it now.

juicy0 · 16/08/2019 09:12

benjispruce I also meant to say good luck for your re marks and I hope those extra marks are there somewhere!

DS was really down yesterday missing his first choice by 1 grade and settling for his insurance. We did call first choice but they wouldn't budge so he has had to accept what has happened

saluki we are in exactly the same boat. Dd cheered up a bit last night but is miserable again today.

minesawine · 16/08/2019 09:29

Ragwort My DS has chosen the 3 year course, but aparently its fairly easy to switch to 4 years. He csnt wait to get onto campus, I feel sick at the thought of him going. We are going to drive up to Nottingham for the day next week, just to have a wander around the city.

FrameyMcFrame · 16/08/2019 09:37

Slalom and LIZS, I was surprised that so many students have seemingly been declined after coming so close. It seems brutal and I'm not sure what has happened there.

I felt DD was treated badly after investing so much in Sheffield, open days, interview then putting them as firm choice.

DD was very decisive after seeing she had got higher grades than her insurance she just immediately declined it from her phone and went into clearing! Her first and second choices were very far apart in grade terms.

I'm glad she did as she has got a place at York now as opposed to Edinburgh Napier.

I think that's a good upgrade! And I'm happy because it's not as far away and the accommodation is much cheaper.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/08/2019 09:45

@juicy0 DS has now firmed his place at UEA. He thinks he wants to take a bike up to use. How safe is Norwich for cyclists? Are there 'off-piste' (not along major roads) ways to cycle into town?

Where are the nearest decent sized supermarkets to Campus? Are they walkable?

TIA

Fibbsdottir · 16/08/2019 09:46

Bath told dd at her one-to-one to call them if she didn't get the grades. She missed by one but they were completely uninterested as they had lots apply through adjustment.

errorofjudgement · 16/08/2019 09:48

Disappointment here from DD, like many others she narrowly missed her predicted grade (only in one subject and only by 2 marks) and cannot see the good grades she got for the ‘poor’ grade
Luckily she went out last night with friends so I’m hoping will have a better perspective today.
The school have recommended a remark and we’ve ordered copies of both papers and will be guided by the school as to which one we should get remarked.
Luckily no uni place on the line as DD is taking a gap year and applying to drama school.

slalomsuki · 16/08/2019 09:54

@FrameyMcFrame interesting you mention Sheffield and investing time with them as that is our problem university that won't entertain one missed grade for a course that's in clearing. DS loved it on all his visits including taster days and came back very positive from them which isn't how they have treated him now.

He has another Russell Group uni to go to which is great but not the one he had set his heart on

Madhairday · 16/08/2019 09:55

We've had no email through from uni yet which seems a bit strange, was expecting something about accomodation etc. She got her offer confirmed and changed to unconditional on track, so we know she's in. Is it worth chasing them do you think or just waiting out?

ZandathePanda · 16/08/2019 09:56

Juicy yes lots of positive remark stories. For example, at A Level someone I knew last year went from a D to a B in a language. So I would have thought that was more than 8 marks.

My Dd has two A and a B. With the B, shes 2 marks off an A which, tbh it still lower than she anticipated after getting A consistently in Year 13. Her very experienced teacher, who has examined this humanities subject for years, looked at her 3 individual papers’ marks and told us to get a remark for one paper. This one is really much lower than the others - possibly not a good move for me to ask if she missed out a question!!!? She repeated the format, the 3 essay questions and how she’d answered to me!! We are having a remark of that paper because of how odd it is. She said she thought it was her best paper of the lot and came out of it smiling. She would have to go down 20 marks to get a C overall and that would be like her getting probably about 20% on that paper.

Problem is, is that if has been marked really low, the exam boards may only be looking at adding up the scores rather than a review of her answers. It’s not in their interests to change lots of grades.

I don’t know what the answer is with humanities. It’s always going to be subjective so there will be swings either way. It seems wrong that we can afford to pay for the remark too and other can’t risk it.

GoldenRuby · 16/08/2019 09:57

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I think there is an Aldi and a Tesco in walking distance. From memory someone said the supermarkets are closest to the Village accommodation, maybe a 20 min walk? Haven't explored that far yet so I can't confirm. What accommodation is your DS hoping for?

GoldenRuby · 16/08/2019 10:01

@Fibbsdottir so frustrating for your DD. Where is she off to instead?
