Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

Piggy and others with underachieving boys; my bright but incredibly lazy DS1 frustrated the hell out of me by being an idle git and totally ploughing his A levels.

Squeezed into a foundation year at a decent Russell Group uni, grew up about 5 years in a couple of terms and ended up with a solid 2.1. Yes the A levels were a bit of an issue when he was job hunting (many grad schemes asked for at least BBB) but he got there in the end and has a decent career now.

I’ve even asked him how I could have motivated him to work harder (he has a younger brother) and he says he honestly believes nothing would have worked until he grew up a bit.

GaraMedouar · 15/08/2019 14:34

My DS also likes gaming, and I’m sure this why he didn’t get the grades he could have done. I nagged him but not excessively as I thought this could backfire on him, he kept insisting he needed some downtime and this is what he liked doing etc. So he’s scraped into his first choice and seems to have been on Xbox most of today! I am hoping he will take more responsibility at university without me there to constantly look disapprovingly at him!

Shimy · 15/08/2019 14:49

@MrKlaw He sounds exactly like mine. I try, really try hard to get him to communicate but nothing works. Throughout the wait I could get no sense of how well he thought he had done in his papers. Just nods and grunts and one syllable answers. In a way and pardon me saying, after watching the ghastly program about Warwick last night, I think he had a lucky escape.

verystressedmum · 15/08/2019 14:52

So. Missed one offer grade for firm by one and we have decision pending!!!!
It may take a few days. No idea what we should be doing now. Nothing from the insurance choice I'm assuming because the firm hasn't rejected yet.
Anyone been in this position??

verystressedmum · 15/08/2019 14:53

We've called the uni they've said just have to wait they will make a decision as soon as they can. When they do they will update.

SheilaHammond · 15/08/2019 15:02

I only lurk usually but am popping up to say well done and commiserations to all your DC. These threads have been so helpful. My DD got into her course of choice so she's happy. Fingers crossed for all of you waiting for decisions.

Decorhate · 15/08/2019 15:02

Catching up on everyone’s news. Congrats to those who are happy with how it went today & best of luck for those still needing to sort something out.

Dd missed her firm by the tiniest margin a few years ago and did not feel like celebrating but luckily she loved her insurance from when she got their & tbh I think it was a better fit for her.

Does anyone know if you have to actively accept your firm or do they assume you are coming? Ds says there is nothing to do. Dh is sceptical & we can’t remember what happened when dd went

TheFallenMadonna · 15/08/2019 15:05

What a nightmare verystressedmum. A two and a half hour wait was long enough. A couple of days?? Has she met the grades for her insurance?

SheilaHammond · 15/08/2019 15:05

And meant to say lots of empathy for you parents of teen boys who need a rocket up them. Been there with older DC. They do grow up in the end. But my God, you tear your hair out on the way.

verystressedmum · 15/08/2019 15:08

@TheFallenMadonna yes in a way! She's got the grades except the one grade he didn't get was the one that is needed! So I have no idea if the insurance will offer. We haven't had anything from the insurance though. No idea what to do

AWanderingMinstrel · 15/08/2019 15:09

Congratulations to everyone's DC today and hand hold for those of you still wading through. This is my third time through but not as bad as the first time when eldest DC bombed for vet med. But they picked themself up, got a 2:1 in another degree, reapplied and now is studying Vet Med. They don't have to give up their dream even though today is a tough day. It is not a race.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/08/2019 15:19

So potentially looking at clearing, but not sure? That must be horrible. However, DS's insurance rejection came through before his firm acceptance, so if that hasn't happened, it might be positive.
DS actually scored higher overall than his offer, but the higher grades were in the less important subject, which made his insurance reject him, but his firm were more accommodating, thank goodness.

Scabetty · 15/08/2019 15:19

Dd got her insurance but 1 mark off an A for her first choice. School have arranged a remark but no guarantee first choice will now take her they said. She has filled out a ‘remark form’ with them (Durham) and has to get back to them with new grade by 31st. Initially upset but happy with insurance choice. Christ this is an awkward system.

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 15:27

God, this all brings back memories. Huge congrats/commiserations, as someone said earlier it is a brutal process. Flowers

The gaming is a massive issue I feel and was a major cause of my DS1's poor work ethic/A level results. He eventually got asked to leave his uni (by some fluke he'd been offered an alt course at his Firm choice RG uni) after 18 mths, during which he failed Yr1 and had to resit the year.

If I could ban computer games I would do so without any hesitation. So many bright kids get addicted to them. Having said that my DS now has a great job - working for a computer gaming company... 🙄 Travels a lot, works non stop and is HAPPY.

Can't remember the poster whose DC was dithering about going away from home. Great results! Would he defer for a year?

lovesapinot · 15/08/2019 15:36

Hi all - new to this thread.

Congratulations to all - I'm sure you have all had a stressful morning!

I wondered if anyone could tell me how long uni's take to give decisions when applying through clearing? It's myself that's applied so will be a mature student.

I had to wait till 3 today until I could add my clearing choice (although obvs not been in education recently)

Thanks!

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 15:38

@lovesapinot have you spoken to the uni dept?

lovesapinot · 15/08/2019 15:39

Yes - not today though.

When I enquired back end of July they said they had loads of places left & to apply via UCAS and add choice in. However as I didn't send application until during the embargo period I could complete/add clearing choice till today - if that makes sense?

lovesapinot · 15/08/2019 15:39

Couldn't not could*

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 15:41

Might it be worth a call to the clearing line/subject dept for the uni you're applying to to have a chat? They may be able to let you know how long until you are likely to hear something.

lovesapinot · 15/08/2019 15:43

Thanks @Horsemad will do!

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 15:46

@lovesapinot, keep us updated! 🙂

Dd off to first choice to study Psychology with AABB grades. Thinking of a re mark for French as she is only 2 marks off an A and that is with full marks for speaking. Full marks for music practical too but not close enough to A* for a re mark. Could go for adjustment but loved Liverpool and can’t wait to go.

CharliesMouse · 15/08/2019 16:03

My son with his AAA is dithering Horsemad. I don't know whether Nottingham will let him defer because I don't think he has asked them! Personally I think he needs to keep the momentum going or he'll end up sitting at home getting on my nerves twiddling his thumbs.

He's not a very mature 18 year old and I fear he could be one of those students that go away to uni and are home again before the end of Fresher's week refusing to go back! I suspect he thinks he might be letting people down if he opts to stay at home and go to our local uni - his insurance choice - which is a great uni but not RG or top of any league tables. (His teachers were very keen on him applying to RG unis given his abilities.) I think he'll do best wherever he feels happiest but HE NEEDS TO DECIDE!

Horsemad · 15/08/2019 16:08

@CharliesMouse, did you get my PM? 🙂
