Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

Huge relief here. Got his predicted grades.

Most of his friends got their first choices too; just one waiting to hear.

pasanda · 15/08/2019 12:31

Well done to all of your dc's today. I just read the press release from Ds's school and a friend got 5 A*!! I mean how??? Just how! 😵

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 12:33

marine, I extend the hand of empathy! Flowers

NotSorry · 15/08/2019 12:34

Got ABC, been through clearing and he's got a place at 2 uni's - one of which we're going to see tomorrow - he feels a lot happier

Roller coaster morning. DS missed his offer by one mark in History, the subject he applied for. Did get higher than offer in Maths and EP though. Rejected by insurance (same offer as firm), but firm not updated this morning. He applied for deferred entry so I was surprised it wasn't just a rejection, but eek. Told him to phone, he was in a state. Took him into college as a car journey is always grounding I think in these circs. They told him to ring, so he did Hmm, and after 15 minutes on hold he was told he was in. It's now on track, and we can laugh at him being better at Maths (my teaching subject) than History. May go for a review of marking. Not sure. Pressure is off anyway. 2 and a half hours from him sobbing over the dropped grade to me sobbing over him getting in. Blimey.

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 12:37

My DS is just so unlike me! I got an old fashioned unconditional (ie an EE offer) at York in my day. Still worked hard; got all top grades (just the way I am wired). It is just really hard to empathise with and understand his inertia but I am trying.

Watching the cricket and the prospect of a Dominos has enlivened him somewhat.

Glad to hear such positive vibes about York. It gets a bit of a bashing on MN from certain quarters but it is such a lovely , warm city and a fab place to be a student or young person.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/08/2019 12:40

Sorry things are tense chez Piggy. How keen is he on the course?

Congrats on "your" results though. I don't teach A level now, but already feel the fear for next Thursday.

Danglingmod · 15/08/2019 12:43

Ds's headteacher congratulated him on still working hard with his unconditional in hand and said that it was about 50:50 whether students did in his experience.

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 12:44

I have huge fear for next Thursday fallen . First time ever for my other GCSE to get results and a flaky English class with lots of PP and poor attenders! Fun!

Keen? Not sure... he has opened his post from them today. Don't know if he read it!

Danglingmod · 15/08/2019 12:45

That does sound like a roller-coaster, Fallen.

Anecdotally, then, it seems we've got some dc on the thread (and in rl) into their courses or good courses through clearing with several dropped grades and others rejected just one mark off one grade. Hmmm.

juicy0 · 15/08/2019 12:49

DC had an unconditional offer so whilst our morning wasn't as stressful as others she was still super anxious to get the grades she wanted and had worked so hard for. I'm relieved and proud to say she is pleased with her results of AAC the C being chemistry which she has battled hard with since day one!!
Well done to all your DC's who have achieved their required grades and huge empathy to those who are still making calls and trying to make plans because the unexpected happened xx

OMG what a weird day. Have been stuck at dd's school where I have no phone & very limited internet ... strange netherworld of slightly hysterical parents & 18yos.

Upshot for is is that she missed her grades (impressively - she needed AAB) but is right on the A boundary for both biology (literally 2 marks below) & chemistry so school have said remark but Southampton have let her in anyway Grin & she's adamant she won't risk remarks.

I was expecting ABC (hoping for A*BC) - she got BBC and applied for deferred entry so isn't starting 'til 2020 anyway ... the whole thing feels unreal & anticlimactic.

She's off with friends so we haven't had a chance to chat about things, I wonder how she'll feel once the relief of getting in has passed & she's stuck with grades that may or may not be correct. But it's her choice & 6th form has been just so utterly awful that we're all so happy never having to go back again!

Sorry to dump ... will read back & catch up now.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/08/2019 12:51

My students are just so unpredictable! Nature of AP, but blimey it's tough.

We are feeling a bit weird now. Such an emotional morning, but now nothing to do at all, as he's not actually going until next year. New fret (for me, DS is on the PlayStation...) is no letter on Track. But it's a deferred place. And just updated. It is all fine. I think I need to go for a walk!!

FrameyMcFrame · 15/08/2019 12:53

So we are off to York on Tuesday for the clearing open day
More open days!!! I thought I'd finished that bit!

Itscoldouthere · 15/08/2019 12:54

Does anyone know when UEA will make accommodation offers?

TheCheeseAlarm · 15/08/2019 12:56

DS2 bombed. He's missed his firm, Warwick, by a country mile but his insurance, Reading, have accepted him. He's not sure what he wants to do and is thinking of deferring. He says they've given him a pity place.

His results are so far off his predictions and mocks that it's ridiculous. They're nowhere near good enough to reapply with next year.

So after he's got over the shock then there's some serious thinking to do.

Congratulations to all those who got what they wanted or needed.

Entschuldigung · 15/08/2019 12:58

DS has an unconditional so that's all fine. He thought he'd get at least AAA but he got BBC. He hasn't worked at all so he's done quite well if you think of it that way. He got 151 in one subject and the grade boundary for an A is 152 so I think he should get that remarked. I don't know anything about how to do this! He needs to talk to school but he's gone off with a friend for the afternoon

The other subjects just gave the grade letter so no idea if it's worth getting those looked at too. How come some subjects / exam boards give more information than just the grade letter? Is it the board or is it because the result was close to a boundary?

MrKlaw · 15/08/2019 13:00

@HugoSpritz yeah maths. I don’t think a year out would help him - he would benefit from keeping the momentum from his A level work. Plus doing further maths helps on the first year to settle in.

Plus we’re talking about relatively small changes - I know he’s more frustrated by missing Warwick by only one grade (and matching the overall requirement). So whether other unis have clearing spaces I think isn’t the point - it’s missing Warwick that’s stinging

Hopefully he’ll get over it and his insurance is still a great place

RedHelenB · 15/08/2019 13:01

@TheCheeseAlarm Definitely take the place at Reading

uzfrdiop · 15/08/2019 13:02

I understand his confusion even though he is accepted into a top 20 uni and the top 10 grade reqs are as much about balancing supply/demand as they are reflective of the course etc.

You do understand that there is no definitive difference between top 10 and top 20, that the position depends on the specific league table used, and this varies from year to year?

But I guess if you think a top rate course is second rate you indeed shouldn't take up the place and leave it for somebody who actually wants it.

Benjispruce · 15/08/2019 13:03

Ents DD is 1 Mark off A* and A in all subjects . Her school pay for remarks if within 3 marks of next grade. Just had to fill out a form today.

Benjispruce · 15/08/2019 13:05

Also DD only got marks for History, had to get school to look up Eng and Biology mark.

TheCheeseAlarm · 15/08/2019 13:05

@RedHelenB. Yes. I think he should take it but it looks quite straightforward to defer it for a year. I think he has some growing up to do.

Looking at the break down of marks; it's not just a couple of rogue papers. I think he's just not worked as hard as he thinks he has.

CharliesMouse · 15/08/2019 13:07

Congratulations/commiserations to all (depending on circumstances)

My DS got a fabulous A, A, A. He needed AAB for his first choice at Nottingham Uni so that's in the bag - BUT, he's having a serious wobble about going away. I'm trying to give him the space to come to a decision but he can't dither for ever and I have visions of him doing absolutely nothing.

I suspect he might be happier living at home and going to our local uni which seems to have his degree choice available still through clearing but it won't be for long I'm sure. He's currently on his mock driving test (great planning on his part!). I'd be happy for him to take a year off but only if he plans to do something with it. I've told him sitting at home for a year doing nothing is not an option. I feel like he needs a rocket under him!
