Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

With apologies for my not very feminist thought there!

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 11:23

Lillian thank you for your lovely words.

His uc is for IR and politics. He got a C in politics A Level.

He was interested in Sports Journalism but the Open Days put him off as he found the content too presenting/broadcasting and IT focused. He'd be happy as Larry if there was a degree in league tables!

Littlespaces · 15/08/2019 11:24

ds got into his reserve with three A stars and a B. He expected this result so is very happy.

Mustbetimeforachange · 15/08/2019 11:28

DD had a grade go down by 6 marks after a remark (this was a modular A level). It didn't affect the grade for that module (she was near the top of the grade band) but it probably affected her overall grade when they were all added up. All other re-marks we've ever had (mostly GCSE, one other AS) haven't budged in spite of being 1 mark off the next grade up. Everyone else seems to have the opposite experience!

Fibbsdottir · 15/08/2019 11:33

Am i being dim piggy? Your ds has a place at uni? That's great isn't it? A C is not that bad is it?

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 11:34

The C was his highest result fibbs...

Yes, I am trying to do glass half full but he really should have done better.

Dunlurking · 15/08/2019 11:34

@FrameyMcFrame York have just dropped the grades for her subject in clearing and she's got an offer and is delighted! Huge relief. Was just about to pay for the remarks so we're not going to bother now.

ZandathePanda · 15/08/2019 11:35

For those who did an English paper with a Great Gatsby question, Dd knows some people who got a C rather than A because the board didn’t add the marks for this question onto the tally.

Dunlurking · 15/08/2019 11:37

@FrameyMcFrame meant to say congratulations to your dd for her York offer. Impressed that they guarantee accommodation on campus.

MrKlaw · 15/08/2019 11:40

Ok so Warwick was a firm no. D now uncertain what to do. He feels a bit like his results are worth a ‘better’ university - I understand his confusion even though he is accepted into a top 20 uni and the top 10 grade reqs are as much about balancing supply/demand as they are reflective of the course etc. All a bit intangible as he is mixing happiness at his results with disappointment being so close by one grade from his firm

So - if he rings another uni can he accept a verbal offer without needing to immediately request to be released to clearing - or does he have to do that on the phone with them? I think he wants to know they’ll accept him and then make the decision

MrKlaw · 15/08/2019 11:41

(Note - this would be for bath so may be a moot point if it’s already full..)

ProlificLurker · 15/08/2019 11:42

@Piggywaspushed I totally feel for you. My DS has bombed and been rejected by firm and insurance so this morning has been tough.

He has rung up and been accepted by Sheffield Hallam (I dialled and put the phone into his hands Hmm) on a very similar course. We’ve been looking at their accommodation options for over an hour and he is much more cheerful now. Hopefully it’ll be a kick up the arse for him.

To be honest, we’re feeling a bit ‘que sera sera’ at the moment. I think, having seen these results, that he would definitely have struggled on the higher level course.

I hope things work out for your DS. He will probably be completely different once he settles in at university.

Mine has been looking at the different societies on offer which, for him, is completely unheard of. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Congratulations to all those who have done well!

mum2eim · 15/08/2019 11:44

DD got into her first choice Durham so very relieved, even more so that in October she was considering retaking year 13 as she was so ill.

Congratulations to everyone who has got the places they want with or without the grades they needed. Sending out big hugs to everyone battling with clearing. It must be very stressful but I am sure it will all work out in the end.

And for all of you who are teachers @Piggywaspushed and others, thank you for having faith in our children, they wouldn't be embarking on their next steps without you.

Fibbsdottir · 15/08/2019 11:46

mrklaw you can't get through to a person at Bath on the clearing line and the message says unfortunately all courses at Bath are full for both clearing and adjustment.

ZandathePanda · 15/08/2019 11:47

Piggy I got BCN at A Level and sweet-talked my way in. Ended up with a MSc and PGCE. First year at uni doesn’t count for end marks and he’ll have time to grow up. I really think he should go for it.

Benjispruce · 15/08/2019 11:48

DD went up from an 8 to a 9 in GCSE maths. She was 2 marks off and school got it remarked without telling her so she didn’t know until she started in 6th form.

Northernlurker · 15/08/2019 11:49

I think York are being quite aggressive with their approach to Clearing and they will pick up an awful lot of good students by making quick decisions and attractive offers.

FrameyMcFrame · 15/08/2019 12:01

Dunlurkin, great news for you!

York were fantastic on the phone with DD who can be very shy when speaking on the phone. She was smiling and laughing all the way through the call Smile

.....what is happening with Sheffield though, they were most unhelpful.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 15/08/2019 12:02

DS got his first choice of York. Was predicted AAB got ABB with a B at EPQ also. Happy household.
Congrats to everyone who's sorted and very good luck to to those Clearing. It's also worth remembering that a levels are a notoriously poor predictor of who will do well at degree level. Plenty of people have missed their grades at a level and achieved an excellent degree.

Dunlurking · 15/08/2019 12:06

@Northernlurker I agree about York. I'm extremely happy with this. Thank you @FrameyMcFrame they were like that with my dd. Very impressed. I love the campus. Would have liked her to apply there originally but the grades were higher.

berlinbabylon · 15/08/2019 12:17

He was interested in Sports Journalism but the Open Days put him off as he found the content too presenting/broadcasting and IT focused. He'd be happy as Larry if there was a degree in league tables

Gosh is he my son Grin

Itscoldouthere · 15/08/2019 12:17

@Piggywaspushed I know how you feel, DS got CC in his retakes (he already had an A).
He’s 4 Marks off a B in Biology which is quite frustrating as 4 Marks is so close but quite a long shot.
He spoke to Birmingham but they won’t take him without a B in his subject.
He’s got his insurance UEA but we are worried that he just doesn’t have the right attitude to study at the moment 🤯

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 12:20

We know two friends' results : one got AAB (he's a dark horse) but has no uni planned and the other got CDE and has had to do clearing. That one got a D in politics so even worse than DS!

Might have to plan DH's independent school for DS2 for A Levels...mainly because I don't trust Spanish to be available but also because the teachers at current school really do not push the middle.

Bowbridge · 15/08/2019 12:23

A degree in 'League Tables'. That would suit my DS down to the ground too!

marine04 · 15/08/2019 12:26

@Piggywaspushed my son too. He did get a B in one subject but has bombed the sciences (one of which he is doing his degree in!). I think he is very lucky his insurance has taken him. He did have compelling extenuating circumstances which school applied for but it looks like the compensating marks weren't awarded by the exam body. I also know he didn't work hard enough but he's currently suffering from depression and lack of motivation so I can't exactly blame him.
