Following on from our previous thread.

Good luck to all DC awaiting results and university places.

School question: Is it only the SLT and the Exams Officer(s) who get to see the results today?

That seems a bit harsh - if you deliberately chose insurance with a reasonable grade gap as a safety net then why not give you the opportunity to improve on that?

I would agree with you when the insurance is a genuinely lower ranked university. But the difference between Warwick and Southampton is not large. The concept that there is a big gap between the RG type universities is made up by the league tables, who deliberately accentuate and amplify small differences.

Northernlurker · 15/08/2019 09:45

A lot of people at dds school have dropped grades. Dd got her a in history, b and c in the others plus a in extended project. Very happy with that and she's looking forward to starting at York.

Sinn · 15/08/2019 09:46

@piggy my son didn't work as hard as he should after his UC to be honest, and his grades made us really wonder if he should even go to uni at all.

He's just finished his second year and is on target for a high 2-1, so he might have just needed a shock.

marine04 · 15/08/2019 09:46

Sorry @Decorhate, I missed your previous message. It's York University and biology was showing up as B,B,C of equivalent tariff instead of the usual A,A,A/A,A,B.

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 09:46

I don't know what the point of a gap year would be tapas as he'd then be applying to uni with really low grades. It's now or never for university.

Lililili · 15/08/2019 09:47

Dr MadelineMaxwell I would go for remarks as they are so close. Even though it doesn’t matter for university these are results that will be on CVs and application forms etc. Last year my DD went up by 18 marks in one paper and her overall grade went from a B to an A*. She also went up by 5 marks on a Maths paper. She had continued a question on extra paper and it hadn’t been marked.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 15/08/2019 09:47

A message for those whose DC didn't get the grades they hoped for or needed ..... last year DD didn't get the grades she needed on one vital subject. She passed but they weren't quite good enough. She was devastated and thought her dreams were out of the window.

Fast forward one year and after re-taking she's just passed with flying colours plus got an extra AS under her belt and is off to her first choice Uni Smile

So to those who haven't got great results...it may seem like the end of the world now but you can come back from this. You can still achieve your dream, don't give up Smile

My son has been accepted at Lancaster! He found out by accident whilst searching for his login to Track. Then we went to school to get the results, which were fab! Does anyone know if you have to formally accept a university place on ucas? Or via email?

bizzey · 15/08/2019 09:50

piggy is the UC only for this year then ?
So sorry for you having to go through this .

Would a change of course make a difference?

Fibbsdottir · 15/08/2019 09:50

Dd didn't get Bath which was her firm. She's going to call them but missed by 2 grades so almost no chance just ringing to tick it off the list. She's been accepted by her conditional which i think she'll end up accepting.

Rivkka · 15/08/2019 09:52

@slalomsuki can he phone his firm and explain? Might be worth a shot

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/08/2019 09:52

DS said that at his school the maths results aren't what they would have anticipated. And this a very selective school with maths/STEM specialisms.

DS has gone radio silent on me so have no idea what the next steps are for him. I would hope the teachers might encourage him to phone Durham while he's there. And offer pointers on priority remarks...

Sorry to hear about your DS @Piggywaspushed. Must be very frustrating. Given his keen interest in sport what about a journalism apprenticeship. Has he voiced any opinion on what he wants to do next?

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 09:54

Not reallybizzey as his best grade is in his degree subject.

Decorhate · 15/08/2019 09:54

Ds is a very lucky boy. Got nowhere near his offer and they still took him. He is happy!

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2019 09:55

A journalism apprenticeship requires rather a lot of get up and go...also, not really a very local option.

Miljah · 15/08/2019 10:01

Still awaiting BTEC results (2 A level equivalents) but got an A* in the A level!😊

Thanks, bluewonder about Art Foundation. DS2 is not being moved to go for Clearing today, so AF it is!

As for the poster who described my DS1 as 'unpleasant' because he was irritated at spending much of his first year at uni, paying £15k, sitting alongside some other students who really shouldn't have been at uni, as he had already covered quite a lot of the work in sixth form.

The odd poster's DC on this thread is possibly wondering why they busted a gut to get AAA when it appears others will get on the same course with BCC!

But I think they can rest assured that they are less likely to struggle once actually at uni.

Fibbsdottir · 15/08/2019 10:02

A recorded message at Bath says there are no vacancies in any courses through clearing and adjustment.

Mustbetimeforachange · 15/08/2019 10:04

DS bombed on his best subject, having got top marks all through. I think he was probably a little too relaxed having got an A* last summer with little revision! Never mind, he's happy.

Decorhate · 15/08/2019 10:06

@Fibbsdottir What subject was your dc wanting to do?

Fibbsdottir · 15/08/2019 10:07

Sports science

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/08/2019 10:09

DS did the same with A Levels as he did for GCSEs. Focused on his least strong subject (Govt & Politics for which they changed syllabus at the end of Yr 12!!!) to the potential detriment of his much stronger ones. Got the same high B grades in all three. Sighs.

Totally surprised that Durham are still considering him TBQH.

The odd poster's DC on this thread is possibly wondering why they busted a gut to get AAA when it appears others will get on the same course with BCC

because it's not just about uni places although that is obviously important, it's about getting the best A level results you can and having good results on your CV.

I got 3 As in my A levels, another girl on my course got BBC. We both got 2.1s on our degree course. A level grades don't tell you how well you will do on the degree.

berlinbabylon · 15/08/2019 10:21

It's a horrible time, I missed Cambridge by a grade and was gutted. Ended up going to another RG and had a great time but it's such an awful feeling

Similar to me - I got the A level grades (exceeded them in fact) but failed their entrance exams. I guess they sort the sheep from the goats (or as DH kindly said yesterday, the tutored from the untutored - actually, given my career history since, I think my A level results flattered my actual intelligence).

Congratulations to everyone who has got their desired uni places and also to those going to their insurance offers, you will have a great time wherever you go. For those who didn't, there are loads of options and everyone is still so young and there is plenty of time to do something else or take a gap year/resits or A level entry apprenticeship.

bizzey · 15/08/2019 10:22

Southampton..be afraid ....be very afraid ...
Cos bizzey will be visiting you lots !!!

Yeah he got his firm !
A (maths) A (chemistry) B (geography)
Which were his predicteds all along.
AND He actually phoned me !

minesawine · 15/08/2019 10:24

Thank you for the good wishes and congratulations.

DS got ACC and is only 1 mark off a B for maths. It says £48 per paper to review the grade, so £144 for 3 papers. It is a lot of money, but how can i just ask for 1 paper to be looked at when I don't know which one gave him the low grade. Does anyone else have experience of remarking. I don't know whether to do it or not, but 1 mark off makes it very tempting.
