Starting uni 2017 continued.
Tales of radiators, errant boilers, tomatoes and potato mashers...oh and university students.

Brizzle you almost distracted me from the fact that Sainsbury's give vouchers for high tomato consumption 🤣.

DD is still waiting for the result of one of her first semester exams.

Assignment due Monday about employability. I'd love to read it.

Grin They don't give vouchers for carrot or kale consumption Angry

I am waiting for assignment results for myself (Masters degree) at the moment, only about 11 hours to go.

Good Luck brizzle!

SMaCM · 21/03/2019 06:53

I want to go back and do my masters. Anyone know any funding sources? I can't afford it ☹️.

bigTillyMint · 21/03/2019 06:56

Good luck Brizzle!

No vouchers here, but we don't shop with Sainsbos!

DD submitted an art appreciation essay yesterday (which involved a compulsory day trip back to London to visit two art galleries she could go to any time in the holidays) for an option she was put ontoHmm She said it was rubbish becaise she doesn't have the "cultural capital" to appreciate artGrin

Xenia · 21/03/2019 06:57

Thanks for teh new thread. The children are now half way through the 3 years. It has gone quickly.
Good luck with the assignment results, brizzle.

I've got a postgraduate loan from student finance because I can't afford it either. I'm doing it via distance learning so I can work at the same time.

It's gone very quickly so far- for us. Our perception of time is apparently affected by the amount of new knowledge and experiences so it should seem much longer to them. DD isn't halfway through yet - anyone else's on 4 year+ courses?

brizzlemint · 21/03/2019 09:29

DD was but has switched it to the 3 year BSc instead of MSc because she wants to change universities for the 4th year as the MSc year is either research based or treatment based and she wants the alternative.

Nearly Easter and looking forward to getting DS home for a few weeks.

He is getting placement sorted but regretting accepting the 1 he did as he’s had another couple of offers and interviews still being offered.

LosingHerMissMarbles · 21/03/2019 09:53

DS finally booked train home for Easter. It will be revision central here this holiday. DS2 with GCSEs and DS1 with second year exams after the break. He has to get a 1st or high 2:1 each year to stay on for his MPhys (4th year). It'll be lovely having him home although I'm not looking forward to the anxiety levels in the house!

latedecember1963 · 21/03/2019 11:14

Thanks for the new thread, Brizzlemint and good luck for your assignment result.

I'll be collecting DS2 next weekend. He hasn't been home at all since going back in January but we went to see him a couple of weeks back for his birthday.
Time seems to have speeded up as I've got older. I remember my college and post grad years seeming to stretch forever.
DS2 will now do 4 years because of his year abroad next year so we can keep each other company, Eccles, along with others I'm sure.
He's also thinking about doing a Masters and / or a doctorate as he just loves studying. We've brought both our lads up to appreciate the opportunities that learning can offer so it seems counter intuitive to start putting the brakes on now, but we really do have to think about topping up our old age funds at some point. 😁

Stopyourhavering64 · 21/03/2019 11:43

Ds finishes 2nd year exams by end of April!...then he's coming home with his 2 flatmates to show them around ( we live in a popular tourist area) He's then off for a month to do some conservation work abroad
He's at Uni in Scotland so is doing a 4 yr degree course but is already talking of postgrad study and potentially PhD! ...guess I won't be retiring just yet, just glad he's enjoying the course and is looking ahead
Dd2 graduates this summer and my other dd is returning from working abroad so the house will be busy again after 2 very quiet years!

FaithFrank · 21/03/2019 11:43

My dd is also doing a 4 year integrated masters course. If we keep these threads going for another 2+ years, will we get a prize of some kind? Grin

She will be back here for 3 weeks in April and already has a few plans. The burning question is whether she will get an Easter egg from her grandparents this year. It might be that she is too grown up. Or it may be that Grandma has the beginnings of dementia and won't remember. Sad

dingit · 21/03/2019 14:47

Another one with a dd doing a 4 year integrated masters course. She doing a placement next year. Last exam 14/6, placement starts 24/6. There's also the small issue of finding somewhere for her to live and moving her in Shock

bigTillyMint · 21/03/2019 16:27

DD is doing a 3 year degree but is talking about doing a Masters after, so I could be here for 2 more years!

And I'm another one with double whammy exams...

brizzlemint · 21/03/2019 16:54

DD just confirmed her summer placement and booked her accommodation etc, she's quite excited about it all. My results were better than I expected so that's good too - thank you for the good luck, it worked.

OP posts:
Xenia · 21/03/2019 18:35

I always have double whammies due to having twins although I think the first year we had A levels with our older daughter when her sister hd GCSEs with their brother GCSEs the immediate year after was probably the most stressful.

My son(s?) didn't get the job at Wimbledon. Their sister did it at university and liked it but it is only short so it doesn't matter. I am sure they will get something else.

brizzlemint · 21/03/2019 19:29

No double whammy exams here, GCSE courses have just started for my youngest. He'll be doing GCSEs when DD and I are finishing our Masters.

And this is why I only had one child Grin

Eve · 22/03/2019 08:51

We have the same issue, exams finish 19th June, placement starts beginning of July at the opposite end of the country! So we need to bring him and all his stuff home from the uni house then move to new accommodation and get a car for him as he will need transport as placement is rural.

Xenia · 22/03/2019 11:38

That sounds a tight timetable, Eve. We are going on our annual family holdiday immediately they break up in June but that is not complicated. I suspect like last year one twin might move his possessions to his year (3) house and not bring much back and the other might entirely clear his room. They have a car down there so they probably won't need my help but I am happy to drive down if they need it.

Just another year plus left.
No drop outs so far. I just watched this about Theranos which is perhaps how not to be a drop out - abcnews.go.com/Business/theranos-remarkable-blood-test-claims-began-unravel/story?id=61173853

Stopyourhavering64 · 22/03/2019 14:40

Ds finishes end 2nd year exams by end of April, so is depositing his 'stuff' in a storage unit over the summer ( as he did last summer)....works out cheaper for us than heading up to collect all his stuff which would involve a 700 mile round trip and an overnight stay, both times!
However dd2 graduates in July and be bring all her 'stuff' back home ( as she's heading off travelling for several months) ....god knows where it's all going to go!

Haffdonga · 23/03/2019 16:47

We'll be double-whammying the revision over Easter too. Ds2 has his second year exams coming up and ds1 is in the final year of his integrated masters with final exams too. It will be like the dreaded GCSE/ A level year again but I'm secretly looking forward to having them both tied to their books under my roof. Wink

It will be the last time ever though as DS1 never ever ever wants to study again and will be travelling when he finishes. Ds2's timetable stops following uni term patterns after his exams as they go straight into hospital placements over the summer. I've been sentimental
hoping we can fit in a final family holiday together but I don't think there's enough overlap.Sad

Brizzle - wishing you fantastic Masters marks! What an achievement doing a masters and working at the same time. Wow!
