Starting uni 2017 continued.
Tales of radiators, errant boilers, tomatoes and potato mashers...oh and university students.

Have just been studying DS's face; it does look quite swollen tonight and he's had the cold/headache/high temp & achey joints mentioned in the list of symptoms on NHS... He's been very listless all week.

Will keep an eye on him.

Mamia15 · 07/04/2019 22:13

Oh no Horsemad :(

DC doesn't feel that poorly - seems more concerned that they can't take part in end of term activities, final lectures or go out.

Mamia15 · 07/04/2019 22:15

Oh and they have a swap kit from the NHS - its a notifiable disease so if anyone has it, they'll need to see a Dr.

Mamia15 · 07/04/2019 22:17

*swab

bigTillyMint · 07/04/2019 22:20

Crikey, scary they can still get it despite the MMR.

DS caught measles (thankfully not badly) when he was too young to have had the MMR - 6months maybe? Thankfully DD had had the MMR and didn't get it. FIL had it as a child and lost the sight in one eye. Do glad I didn't fall for Wakefields crap.

LosingHerMissMarbles · 07/04/2019 22:24

Hope your DC isn't too poorly Horsemad. Friend's DC at Liverpool has also had mumps recently despite having had all MMR doses when younger. Wakefield was such a dangerous charlatan.
Interestingly my DH was at doctor's surgery for travel vaccines recently and the nurse gave him MMR booster. They are apparently giving it to all relevant patients to boost their immunity at the moment.

hellsbells99 · 07/04/2019 22:37

I think there needs to be more investigation into why so many are getting mumps despite having been vaccinated. There needs to be a better vaccine or revert back to the original single mumps vaccine if that is better.

Alaimo · 07/04/2019 22:41

I had mumps as a master student, despite being vaccinated. As far as I could tell it was less severe than it would have been without vaccination. My GP however first identified it as a bacterial infection so sent me away with antibiotics and the advice to see my dentists. I believe it was my dentist who eventually identified it as mumps and sent me back to my GP to get tested.

MoorMummy · 07/04/2019 22:46

Just catching up after trying to work out whether my son started in 2017 🤣 which he did. I think I was on some of the early anxious threads ( son missed his offers and had to go into clearing ) . Anyway he’s had a great two years, seems to be doing ok and isn’t getting into any disgraceful scrapes, he’s very social but not a huge drinker , leading DH to question whether he was swapped at birth.

He’s just had a field trip to NYC, looking forward to one in Spain later in the year and thinking about a Masters once next year is done.

Only fly in ointment for me is him moving out of a very plush comfortable and SAFE new build student apartment into a rather edgy terraced road for Y3. I’m trying to detach and let him crack on, but as my PFB and only child it’s hard!

Horsemad · 07/04/2019 23:11

MoorMummy my DS is doing a house share for Yr3, after 2 yrs in lovely halls accommodation.
I'm like, 'WHY?' (because if it were me, I'd love to be in halls, with my own toilet! 😆) but as you say, we have to let them get on with it!!

MoorMummy · 07/04/2019 23:19

🤣🤣 horse mad! They drive you nuts! The flat was a six bedder, two bathrooms, gorgeous with masses of storage. Third floor and very secure. We had got used to the the cost and his flatmates were lovely, I’m over there cleaning and knocking about now and then as DS and I share the same taste in music and gigs 😊. But he’s staying with at least one flat mate from this year and the other two went to a school I know well, so basically four young RC lads ( on paper- I can’t imagine they are that observant 🤣🤣) living together , what could go go wrong 🤣🤣. I’m pretty stringent on checking safety certs etc so I’ll be super vigilant and hopefully it will be ok.The rental company for this years flat have been excellent and therefore hard to beat.

Good luck to your DS for this year.

bigTillyMint · 08/04/2019 07:35

Hi MoorMummy, I recognise your name! Good for your DS - that's what student life is all aboutGrin

polarpig · 08/04/2019 09:37

Chickenpox is the one that bothers me as well as mumps as one of mine has never had it despite being accidentally exposed to it lots of times. Even when their best friend at school (and about half of the class) had it they didn't get it.

latedecember1963 · 08/04/2019 13:05

I remember all the hoohah about the MMR when DS2 was at the age to have it. We went ahead because his brother born in 1993 had had it with no ill effects. If Ds2 had been our 1st child we may well have been less relaxed about it.
Hope those DC who are unwell feel better soon. There's never a good time to be ill, but weeks before important exams will only add to their stress.

brizzlemint · 08/04/2019 13:10

I only got DD to have the vaccination because I decided if I didn't do it and she got seriously ill from measles then I'd feel too guilty and I thought measles was more likely than autism.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/04/2019 13:58

DD hasn't had chickenpox, we got her vaccinated ahead of GCSEs. She was needlephobic at the time, but rationally disliked the idea of being unecessarily ill even more.

She had a day off from revision yesterday, went with some pals to see the boat race. Cambridge won, the women smashed it so I imagine she was happy.Grin

Needmoresleep · 08/04/2019 14:13

DD only has a term left of pre-clinical and they are piling on the work. She is tired and ill but has elected to stay in her flat, at least for a few days as the others have gone home and she thinks she will get more work done.

It sounds nice. A friend cooked for her last night, and she is cooking for others tonight. Term time is busy with lectures, placements, sports training etc, so I think she is enjoying a chance to do things at her own pace. No idea when she will venture home, but though we would like to see her, we are really pleased that she is comfortable and settled.

MountainPeakGeek · 08/04/2019 18:28

I hope all the dcs that are under the weather get better soon.

DS1 is in his final exam week now. He comes home for the "summer" (we still have some snow on the ground, LOL!) next weekend.

He's feeling confident for his exams, but is decidedly unimpressed with their timings. He has 5x 3hr papers to sit and 4 of the 5 have been scheduled for the unenviable 6-9pm slot, including Friday and Saturday night Grin

brizzlemint · 08/04/2019 18:36

Errol do you mind me asking if the NHS did it or did you have to pay? I will look into that just in case.

We were delighted about the boat race too.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 08/04/2019 18:51

We paid for the vac, brizzle.

Xenia · 08/04/2019 20:52

Good luck for those doing exams. My 2 and their friend who is staying have been working today as essay deadlines are coming up, although one only got to the point of coming up with his essay topic. They have just gone out to dinner with another old school friend.

Mountain, that sounds awful exan scheduling particularly one at 6pm unless someone is an owl rather than a lark I suppose.

Needmoresleep · 09/04/2019 10:50

Mountain, where is your son? The US? DS is on the first year of a PhD and even then they seem to have exams every 4 weeks, and all count. The American students seem to think this is normal as they havd had similar all through school, whilst DS has belatedly realised there are advantages in the UK approach.

Our broadband has gone down and dear Virgin say it will be at least Thursday till they get it up again. So I doubt we will see DD till the weekend. Presumably with virtually no one around she has no distractions so is doing some studying.

Xenia · 09/04/2019 11:55

Sorry about the broadband. We have a second friend of my son coming to stay today now for 4 nights plus the other one already here so the house if illing up. Apparently they all need to work and the one coming early today is bringing books for the one already here.

bigTillyMint · 09/04/2019 12:15

Exams at 6-9pm would suit DD perfectly, even on a Friday/Saturday night as she doesn't go out/start work till 10pm Grin

RedHelenB · 09/04/2019 16:54

How s ds Horsemad?

He ll enjoy his house share next year, its one step on from halls.
