Starting uni 2017 continued.
Tales of radiators, errant boilers, tomatoes and potato mashers...oh and university students.

DD came back for the weekend - DSs 18th birthday - and has gone back for 2 or 3 weeks.

Has everyone else's DC sorted or at least thought about what they are doing for their dissertation?

Xenia · 24/03/2019 19:29

They have not mentioned dissertations yet to me. I am not sure what the time limits are etc. There were none on my degree as I read law which I don't think tends to have them - just masses of exams.

brizzlemint · 24/03/2019 20:28

Thank you Haffdonga, I managed to drag my grade up from a C to a B. I'm starting my dissertation now Shock

Bravo Brizzle . You must be an inspiration to your DD.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2019 15:30

DD just arrived home for a few days off. Smile

brizzlemint · 25/03/2019 16:12

I think she's a good influence on me!

Just back from taking DD to the nearest hill, I think the one thing she doesn't like about her uni is the flatness of the area. Grin

I expect you're a positive influence on each other, BrizzleSmile**

Dd1 came home this weekend to see George Ezra, home for her last uni length holiday at easter before going to school holidays. Finished her exams last week and onto phantom heads. House seems so much noisier with 3 kids at home!

Horsemad · 25/03/2019 19:43

Sounds good Red HelenB 🙂 DS is home on Saturday, I'm looking forward to seeing him!

latedecember1963 · 26/03/2019 10:55

Congratulations on your result, Brizzle.
The end of term is almost here. I'll be driving to DS2's house on Friday afternoon, staying over and then we'll head back on Saturday.

He's just found out that his personal tutor is moving to a new job after Easter. He's been a real inspiration to my son and has really encouraged him. Would it be odd if I sent him an email saying how much we've appreciated the time and effort he's taken and to wish him well in his new venture? I know my son would be totally ok with it but would the tutor think it strange? I don't want to breach etiquette!

Xenia · 26/03/2019 12:02

Well done to Brizzle.
I raised dissertations with one of mine - he has to agree the topic by May and I presume it will be similar for his twin. He was off to play tennis - he seems to play almost every day at the moment.

SMaCM · 26/03/2019 13:07

Late December I sent a letter to an inspiring tutor at sixth form and they said no one ever does it, but it was really nice to read.

So - from my experience - who cares about etiquette when you're telling someone they really make a positive difference in this world.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/03/2019 13:29

It's surely never wrong to thank someone.

Carriemac · 26/03/2019 13:37

triple whammy here!
DT daughter has exams when she goes back after easter, DT son has summer second year exams, DS1 is doing an intercalated masters so writing his disseration over easter
and I'm writing up my (part time and very drawn out) PhD whilst workig.
attempting a family holiday at easter but it will be a bring the revision cottage break!

Haffdonga · 26/03/2019 14:09

Quadruple whammy Carriemac ! Good luck to anyone in your household who isn't studying. I can imagine there will be a constant need for coffee and late night snacks ministered to you all.

Latedecember - I agree, who cares about etiquette? I'm sure the tutor would like to hear that he's made a real difference. If your ds writes one too then all the better. We wrote similar to a sixth form tutor who had had an enormous influence on both our dss when he quit teaching . He wrote back a really heartfelt thank you to us saying he'd choked up when reading it.

I think we somehow assume that people in official jobs know we're grateful so don't need thanking, but we're all human and a little appreciation never hurt anybody Smile

Carriemac · 26/03/2019 14:19

there are occasional fights over laptop charging cables and the 'best' revision table..
but we have lovely revision breaks involving chocolate and trash TV :)

FaithFrank · 27/03/2019 12:07

I agree with the others latedecember a sincere thank you can never be the wrong thing to do.

I sent a thank you email to a sixth form teacher who encouraged dd. He sent back a nice message saying what he appreciated about her. It was an all-round love fest Grin

RedHelenB · 27/03/2019 17:08

Well done Brizzle.

One very happy daughter , passed 2nd year dentistry exams and got merits in 2 of them.

Horsemad · 27/03/2019 17:15

Well done to RedHelenB's DD!

RedHelenB · 27/03/2019 17:31

Thanks Horsemad I could tell she was really pleased cos she rang me straight away. She can relax and enjoy her Easter holidays now.

Malbecfan · 27/03/2019 17:48

Well done RedHelen's DD. Good luck Brizzle.

DD has been home for 10 days now. She is revising very hard, but it's nice to have her around to put out washing (mostly hers) and run round after my father whilst I'm at work. She is going back the week before term starts, which will actually be before Easter. However, she is going to a football match in London on Saturday with the lad who has the next room to her and I'm not at all jealous...!

She has next year's accommodation sorted and will be in one of her college's houses with her mates. It has an oven and a freezer, so she's very happy that nobody else wanted it. It's also cheaper again than this year's room. She has chosen her options for next year and like lots of other DC here hopes to take her studies into the 4th year Masters.

latedecember1963 · 27/03/2019 17:54

Thank you for all your reassurances that I wouldn't be weird to email my son's tutor. I sent a message yesterday evening and today I've had a lovely reply.
Well done to Redhelen's DD and good luck to all those DC who will be revising during the Easter break.

brizzlemint · 27/03/2019 18:28

well done RedHelen's DD, that's good news.
I found out that most of the people on my Masters programme got D for the last project, plus 20% of the people who started have dropped out Shock

Well done to RHB's DD.

Xenia · 28/03/2019 11:49

Well done on the dentistry exams. My twins have their exams after Easter I think and I am telling them to work backwards as they are sking for a week over Easter itself and one has a field trip for his subject which is abroad too just before or just as term starts and I think theo ther has a friend coming to stay for a week so I doubt there will be vast amounts of revision time at Easter at this rate.

I have not heard any plans from mine about after graduation yet. One is applying for a summer job I think but whether he gets it remains to be seen.
