That's nice ... some good accommodation news Smile

Itscoldouthere · 12/02/2019 20:47

I will have to look up UEA travel costs as we are going to an offer holdersday on Saturday, can’t say I noticed anything when we booked.
Ds is also still waiting to hear from Bath 🙄 if he doesn’t hear in the next two weeks he’s going to withdraw as he’s getting twitchy about accommodation as he will only consider en suite and is looking for quiet halls!

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2019 20:55

Just checked the UEA one : it's got eligibility criteria.

Another accommodation success. Once Dd had submitted her acceptance of an unconditional offer she sent off her accommodation preferences. Two days later she received an offer of her first choice. Accepted, deposit paid. Now she is planning her colour scheme.

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2019 20:56

Of course if they have those en suites, they have to clean them themselves!

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2019 20:57

I'm still feeling twitchy about this accommodation stuff. We won't be firming anything until at least second week of March and it feels like so many unis do first come first served...

Itscoldouthere · 12/02/2019 22:54

Don’t fit the criteria for UEA funding.
Judging by the amount of cleaning DS does in his current home bathroom I think his ensuite will be rather grubby 😊
When we looked around halls one place had a weekly cleaner in the price, but can’t remember which university it was, they’ve all merged into one now !

Piggywaspushed · 12/02/2019 23:02

We definitely had cleaners back in the day. Everyone left their bin outside the door if they didn't want her to come in! Not me, obviously. But we didn't have en suites needless to say. And they still reckoned my friend contracted hepatitis from filthy toilets ....grim.

FrameyMcFrame · 12/02/2019 23:15

Checking in to the new threadSmile

DD Off to the Sheffield offer holder day on Sat

Shoukd we be applying for accommodation now? I don't know how all of this works

Good to read everyone's news.

BigGreenOlives · 13/02/2019 00:05

Some of the halls built in the 1990s at UEA have en suites and cleaners that bring a loo roll a week. No cleaners at one of the halls built in the 1920s at Bristol & no weekly loo roll delivery either. I’m being a bit vague so as not to out myself.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/02/2019 06:20

Loo roll that bone of student flat-sharing contention...

DS has just heard which Durham college he's been allocated. Thankfully it's self-catering (it's still expensive though...)

Does anyone do online shopping for their DC`s. Is it possible and secure to send food to the halls.

BigGreenOlives · 13/02/2019 12:30

People definitely do. I haven’t as dcs at uni both like cooking and so like choosing for themselves but dd benefits from friends’ mothers generosity.

justasking111 · 13/02/2019 13:11

I was thinking about loo rolls, bleach and household stuff as well for DS. I know that is something he would not think about. So not to bother with food then. Thanks for that.

ifonly4 · 13/02/2019 14:28

BigGreenOlives, when we looked around Birmingham a wellknown supermarket delivery van was going around dropping off lots of deliveries!

I will let my DD do her own shopping as she'll know what she wants and needs. A student at Warwick told me they often eat together on a Saturday night, so that's going to vary the shopping list as well.

bizzey · 13/02/2019 15:54

Well he finally got something in the post from Southampton!!

Accommodation is open now till August 1st to get a guarantee place.
He asked me if he should firm now .
Offer day is 2nd March. The other was February.
Dont know whether to wait for march to see if they dangle any carrots for him ...or just firm now and get on with the accommodation?
He is only chatty at certain times of the day so dont always get alot out of him
-how do you hack accounts-

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 13/02/2019 16:08

bizzey check to see if the accommodation is offered on a first come first served basis. If not, I'd advise him to wait until he's done the offer holders' days.

DS and I did his UCAS application on my PC - that's why I can access it but have had no success hacking his phone so not able to see the emails coming in from universities. I have only managed to see about one email and that's with really having to push for DS to show me....

Well think i miss read it ..??
Phoned them ..accomidation is allocated after results day .
Think he will wait now till offer day .

Should say cos i asked..no firts come first served ..?? Everyone applies and it gets sorted after results day .

LIZS · 13/02/2019 16:37

We were at an open day on Saturday where they stated accommodation booking opens from early March until end July. Although they do not allocate until after results day they take into account firm before insurance and allocate preferences in date of submission order.

VanCleefArpels · 13/02/2019 17:05

justasking personally I wouldn’t do the online shop for my student - mostly because I have no idea how much space he has in cupboards/fridge/freezer and what day(s) he might not actually be cooking for himself due to other commitments. It might go to waste. Maybe better to send a gift card for their favourite supermarket if the purpose is to save them a bit of money?

justasking111 · 13/02/2019 17:12

Oh I thought with online shopping he could make up the list, I was just the bank lol.

Saw a DM who paid for her DD meals on a weatherspoons app when she ate out with friends, thought that was quite clever.

bizzey · 13/02/2019 17:16

Oh ..the gift card idea sounds good .
A lttle bot here and there till they go would be easy to do. Stock up on their money for food without noticing it .
Ohh ..thank you

VanCleefArpels · 13/02/2019 18:25

justasking ah well that’s different! If he has the app for whichever supermarket you can set it up to store your debit card details. But I’m not sure I’d want my kids to have unfettered access to all sorts (ie alcohol 😉) in that way 😂

VanCleefArpels · 13/02/2019 18:26

bizzey saving up now is a great idea! I’ve also heard about the Wetherspoons app, must give it a try!

Somethingsmellsnice · 13/02/2019 19:27

When it was my older son's 21st I did an online shop for a birthday cake, a bottle of champagne and a box of 20 beers to be sent to his house before 9am when I knew he would be in!
