Well he finally got something in the post from Southampton!!

Accommodation is open now till August 1st to get a guarantee place.

I think Southampton guarantees accommodation for all firm and insurance offers. That's what dd1 said, anyway.

Monkey2001 · 13/02/2019 20:43

Offer holder days - Sheffield offers free accommodation in hall for the night before or after (with social stuff too). Says limited availability and first come, first served, but a nice offering. We stayed in student accom in Leeds for Open Day, which was great.

Piggywaspushed · 13/02/2019 20:45

That sounds fab... but why are there rooms going spare??

VanCleefArpels · 13/02/2019 21:19

witchend nearly everywhere guarantees some kind if accommodation for first years, the issue is getting the best opportunity to choose which kind/which location/what price point. It seems to me that there are a few places which are weaponising this to pressure kids to choose them, NTU being the worst example of this

We still haven't heard from Bath so are in this exact position. It's frustrating.

Witchend · 13/02/2019 22:05

Van I think a lot don't guarantee for insurance, although in real terms almost all will get something.
It's one reason why Durham can be a pain as firm as they can take ages to decide whether to accept of refuse if you miss the offer, and then you can miss your insurance accommodation.

Piggywaspushed · 13/02/2019 22:07

I agree coleoptera. My DS has heard from all but we are waiting for results for a scholarship exam and for visit days. It's frustrating that thos who are waiting, or those who are still undecided, seem to be penalised.

VanCleefArpels · 13/02/2019 22:09

In all the places both my kids have applied to there is a first year guarantee regardless of whether firm or insurance. But obviously if insurance there’s less (if any) choice as to what you get

Piggywaspushed · 13/02/2019 22:10

I know I pointed the finger at NTU but I am not convinced others aren't the same. On Student Room earlier, Hull students seemed to know floor and room of accommodation already.

The only consolation is the low birthrate might mean a surplus perhaps...

And I guess some of those firms might not meet their offers...

Piggywaspushed · 13/02/2019 22:11

The first year guarantee just means of any accommodation , though. With some unis this is the difference between accommodation right on campus and accommodation miles away, for example.

SirB0bby · 13/02/2019 23:32

Does anyone know what happens if you sort out accommodation then decide to defer? Do you lose the deposit or would it carry over to next year?

LoniceraJaponica · 14/02/2019 07:29

It depends on the university. DD decided not to take up her place at Nottingham (but based in Derby) last year. They refunded 50% of the deposit.

VanCleefArpels · 14/02/2019 09:46

piggywaspushed precisely and this is the reason why neither of mine had/will have an insurance as the living bit is so uncertain

Piggywaspushed · 14/02/2019 09:57

Oh, it is so stressful!

Visiting Hull this Sat, Lincoln next. Both unis have nice new accommodation so I guess we will find out if it is till bookbale then!

ProlificLurker · 14/02/2019 16:45

Mine has had all his offers now. Going to offer holder days at Leicester and Sheffield. Can’t find out anything about offer holder days for Manchester other than they are on a Wednesday 🤷‍♀️ and he won’t look in his email spam for me 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I’m getting properly twitchy about accommodation, but he is totally disinterested (until he ends up in a dump miles from anywhere - and then it will be my fault. Obviously.)

Piggywaspushed · 14/02/2019 17:08

That sounds just like mine lurker !

ProlificLurker · 14/02/2019 17:17

I’m trying to just prompt him occasionally and then fret about it in secret!

Piggywaspushed · 14/02/2019 17:38

I fret in public! Achieves very little. Been through a lot of Rennies.

Rise in Uni applications

We might not be so lucky after all? Confused

Shimy · 14/02/2019 18:28

DS still claims he has no email from UCAS about being automatically entered for clearing. Does anyone have any advice? can we ring UCAS to resend it Blush

ifonly4 · 14/02/2019 19:05

Shimy, yes I saw something similar. I wonder which unis have noticed increase applications. Not looking good for those who drop a grade or two for their firm.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/02/2019 19:16

It depends whether it's an increase across the board or not. But a bit depressing for those who do drop grades...

I read somewhere that there was also an increase in numbers for those who applied before the early October deadline (I guess the very aspirational applicants?).

OP posts:
Shimy · 14/02/2019 19:28

Ifonly4- Thats makes it even more difficult knowing which one to firm and which one for insurance.

New - It could be schools are setting their internal dates earlier? DS's school old them all to submit by first week in October although they didn't submit to UCAS till late November.

Shimy · 14/02/2019 19:33

This might shed a bit more light:Early deadline applications

It seems the increase might be Medicine, Dentistry and Vet med including other medical type courses AND all course at Oxbridge saw an increase.
