old thread

A chat/support thread for parents of undergrads who have entered the quite frankly slightly odd world of Oxbridge. Grin

Apparently we are parents to undergrads now Confused

Yes, Sunndowne, he is an engineering student - he was part of a team from the student group at his church.

I haven't seen any ball photos, he was at Jesus ball last night, and Trinity Hall event tonight, then a charity one later in the week. I suspect he is going to be knackered!!

OhTheRoses · 18/06/2019 21:41

Four more sleeps until she's home Smile. Full house this summer!

Sunndowne · 19/06/2019 17:02

Thought so pandas. My DS is an eng. Student too. My DD was also at Jesus ball. Haha, they all mingle without them knowing we chat away!

Nice isn't it ohtheroses that they'll soon be home.Smile

OhTheRoses · 22/06/2019 16:01

Hooooome Grin
All thoughts of replacing the old jalopy with a smaller car flew away when we had to send dh home on the train!

PandaG · 22/06/2019 16:26

Oh no, Roses! We are home too, no problem fitting everything in as DS was able to leave pots and pans etc and his airer in a storage space rented by a friend.

First load of washing on, and there will probably only be one more. We bulked the first load up with our running gear; did the Huntingdon parkrun on the way down this morning, then showered at DS's. We meant to do run in Cambridge, but closure of the A14 and diversions meant we didn't get there in time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/06/2019 16:32

That's funny Roses!

dd is home too now. It's lovely :) She's not a very efficient packer, and seemed to have bought home quite a lot of food, but we did manage to get it all in without too much embarrassment in front of the porters.

I didn't go. Hubby and DD crammed the car full of DD's stuff. Only hiccup, they closed our junction on M25 and DH got lost! Isn't it lovely to have them home!!! Enjoying until novelty wears off and I'm moaned at!!!!
Good on your DH ohtheroses.
Thanks for stories and support this year - has been really good. Flowers enjoy summer!

Oh it’s lovely to hear they are all home, we are still plodding on into 9th week 😢. DS has four exams and finishes on Friday morning, it’s feeling like a long week ahead. It’s been quite a tough day for those still going, seeing lots of friends excitedly packing up and going home. He says it’s very quiet around college, there are about 1/2 of them left so it must feel quite empty. I’ve said I think a bit of bunker mentality will probably kick in amongst those left as they are all in the same boat and can support each other through it. His mates are going back on Friday to trash him, bless them!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/06/2019 18:45

Your poor lad. It's rotten for them. dd says the oxford mathematicians have their exams next week.
It's going to be extremely hot too.

Bakeandyarn · 22/06/2019 19:05

I know, the weather forecast is hot, hot, hot! Fortunately he’s got morning exams with the exception of Monday afternoon so should be ok but the time it gets really warm! He’s worried they won’t be allowed to remove jackets and sub fusc in the exam room but I’m sure they will?

Sunndowne · 22/06/2019 19:14

Oh bakeandyarn, your poor DS. He's just got to hang on in there - soon a long rest!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/06/2019 19:17

They must let them take it off surely?

OhTheRoses · 22/06/2019 23:36

Oh Baked the poor lad.

OhTheRoses · 24/06/2019 08:36

Waiting on tenterhooks for exam results due today.

OhTheRoses · 24/06/2019 10:09

High 2.1. V pleased daughter.

Sunndowne · 24/06/2019 13:48

Congratulation Rose's DD and her mum!! Weve nurtured them there!GrinGrin

Sunndowne · 24/06/2019 13:49

Oh whoops- sorry about typos. Blush

Bakeandyarn · 24/06/2019 15:30

Great news ohtheroses, I’m just a teeny bit envious! DS currently doing first exam! I’m so glad you haven’t all left me here on my own.

HeyBells · 24/06/2019 18:32

Baked a friend's CD is still plugging away at Oxford with exams this week. It seems harsh when everyone else is home. DS enjoyed his last week, he was at Jesus ball as well. He mostly seems to be sleeping now.

Congratulations Roses DD.

HeyBells · 24/06/2019 18:33

DS not CD!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2019 20:42

Congratulations to your dd Roses! That's brilliant!

OP posts:
ofteninaspin · 24/06/2019 21:48

Congratulations to your DD Roses! A little envious here too as DD is one of those still plugging away at Oxford. Like Bake's DS, she had her first exam this afternoon.
Gowns can, apparently, be removed for the actual exam although have to be worn outside. Still stuck with black tights though - not ideal hot weather wear!
DD is one of a dwindling number at college not yet partying and she is very much looking forward to trashing at the end of the week!

Bakeandyarn · 25/06/2019 07:10

ofteninaspin I’m glad we’re not the only ones still going. DS did say that they were told yesterday that they don’t need to wear suit jackets in this heat which is good. I know for matriculation some of his female friends were told that they couldn’t go in as their ankles were visible, as they had not worn socks or tights! His remaining exams are all morning ones so if it gets hotter this week at least they will be out the way earlyish! He is definitely looking forward to Friday trashing and partying, they’ve definitely earned it.

ofteninaspin · 25/06/2019 11:43

Bake Thank goodness jackets need not be worn. Just the thought of wearing a collar and bowtie in this humidity makes me wilt!
Good luck to your DS and everyone else taking exams for the rest of this week. DD has (biodegradable) trashing kit ready for Friday!
