Medicine 2020

EightToSixer · 30/09/2018 20:53

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

Interview for dd at uea. Happy!
Bmat scores average so will see how that plays out for the 2 bmat options...but then it s a bell curve so she with the majority.

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2019 15:19

@emummy sorry to hear that. Which 2 is she still waiting for? Are her stats good for those?

emummy · 23/11/2019 15:32

Aberdeen & Glasgow; think she might make Aberdeen, doubtful for Glasgow.

EightToSixer · 23/11/2019 16:25

DD's BMAT scores were average which was a bit of a shock for her after all the studying she did for it. She's come to the conclusion that Oxford will be a straight rejection now.

Interview on Monday for Plymouth, which she is very excited for. We are driving down tomorrow to spend a night at the (rainy November) seaside.

Emummy sorry to hear that. Was aberdeen her favourite? Hope i remembered that right and it works out for her. Good luck for monday sixer and dd.

emummy · 23/11/2019 17:28

Yes thanks it is. She feels that if she is unsuccessful this year she will resitUCAT next summer & take a gap year. Aberdeen are not sending out invites till mid December so a wee bit to wait.
Good luck to all the dcs with interviews so far, hope they go well.

Tinkobell · 23/11/2019 18:03

@Monkey2001...have faith 🤞I’m sure it will speak volumes to the interviewers that your DS is tenacious and determined! The Sheffield course is full full on from week 2 ....dissection full on, clinical placement etc ...I think DD is enjoying some bits more than others - be good to have a lengthy conversation with her about it at Xmas. Certainly seems very varied and stimulating but long hours just one free afternoon a week to get out and do a hobby etc....although they have weekends too.

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2019 21:37

@emummy fingers crossed for Aberdeen. She would not be the first to have 1 interview and 1 offer, which is all she really needs.

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2019 21:39

Thanks @Tinkobell, hope there are not too many bits your DD is not enjoying Smile

ladsmum · 24/11/2019 00:51

@tinkobell all sounds very exciting for your DD. Got fingers crossed that DS will make it to Sheffield for 2020 to join her.
So sad to hear about some DCs rejections - all feels rather unfair especially when they have so much invested in it. Here is hoping it all comes good.

Tinkobell · 24/11/2019 10:54

I think it's inevitable that there'll be some modules that they like more than others along the way. First few weeks was histology which she found a slog, but interspersed with a lot of v interesting stuff too. The long 2 hr placement commute every 2 weeks (not frequent at this stage) also has had a 👎 but then apparently the practise itself is super, so that's surely more important than the journey?. Think it takes a while for them to 'bed in' tbh.

Monkey2001 · 24/11/2019 17:32

@emummy DS has turned into a gap year fan having had it foisted on him. It is great that your DD can be philosophical and have a long term plan so she is prepared if it does not work out this year at Aberdeen or Glasgow. Aberdeen give extra points in their scoring system for achieved grades and those are carried through to the post interview score.

emummy · 24/11/2019 18:01

Thanks Monkey. I think she could really benefit from it, although the thought of re doing UCAT makes me ill, never mind her!

FiveHoursSleep · 25/11/2019 09:34

Update on my DD.
She's just had an email from Manchester saying they have confirmed that due to a technical issue she wasn't sent the link to the Non Academic Information form so they've rescinded her rejection and she has until Wednesday to submit the form.
She is very happy to have a second chance.
Thanks to those of you who offered sympathy/support.

speedyhedgehog · 25/11/2019 09:40

Glad to hear that 5 hours sleep! She must be thrilled.

FiveHoursSleep · 25/11/2019 09:50

@speedyhedgehog She's very happy, especially as she passed her driving test today as well.

Monkey2001 · 25/11/2019 09:54

@FiveHoursSleep that is great news, well done her!

speedyhedgehog · 25/11/2019 13:29

Newcastle interviews out! DD has received one this morning - anyone else with good news? I know there are a few of us waiting to hear back from newcastle.

Monkey2001 · 25/11/2019 14:45

Great news Speedy. Loads starting this week - UCL interviews seem to be coming out too.

DS now has Cambridge date (at 8:30 in the morning - good thing they offer accommodation, but not really his best time of day!), so 2 interviews this week, 2 w/c 9/12, then wait......

SummerbodyIwish · 25/11/2019 15:08

Speedyhedgehog. What UCAT score? If u dont mind me asking. My ds applies to Newcastle but not heard anything

speedyhedgehog · 25/11/2019 15:39

Thanks monkey. Dd has one this week, 2 next week and now newcastle the following week. Can't believe it'll be done before christmas then we'll have to try to forget about it until March! Summer body her score was 3100 band 1. Hope you hear soon 🤞

SummerbodyIwish · 25/11/2019 15:53

Hedgehog that score is amazing. My ds got 2840 sjb 2. So hopefully that will be enough. The waiting is painful

speedyhedgehog · 25/11/2019 17:06

Thanks summer body. Seems likely 2840 will be enough doesn't it?, its also an excellent score. The waiting is torturous though. And i got it wrong, we have next week off, 2 the following week and one the week after that.

speedyhedgehog · 25/11/2019 17:08

Sixer have been thinking of your dd today and hoping it went well for her. 😔

speedyhedgehog · 25/11/2019 17:24

Whoops that was supposed to be 🤞
