Medicine 2020

EightToSixer · 30/09/2018 20:53

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

Congratulations to your DD EightToSixer! DS is still waiting to hear from Leicester, Nottingham and Kent and Medway. He has an interview with UEA.

emummy · 20/11/2019 16:38

Still nothing for us, waiting on Glashow, Aberdeen, Dundee & Edinburgh. The last 2 are sending out invites in the next few weeks I think, Aberdeen do it in batches till February & Glasgow are not saying!

MaddieElla · 20/11/2019 16:45

Thanks Monkey, that is really helpful.

Hostess, you correct I'm sorry. I am getting Birmingham and Sheffield mixed up - too many open days lately!

This is all very useful information thank you, I'll stop chiming in now and let you get on with next year's intake. Blush

speedyhedgehog · 20/11/2019 16:47

Well done sixers dd.
Exciting day for my DD too - she's had an interview date through this afternoon from Edinburgh! That's 3 for her too, waiting to hear from Newcastle now.

SummerbodyIwish · 20/11/2019 16:54

Waiting to hear from Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool. Anyone else heard from these 3?

HostessTrolley · 20/11/2019 17:01

@maddieElla - chime away - the application process is a minefield which is why applying strategically is so important x It’s not so much about where they want to go, as it is about targeting unis where their profile has the best chance of getting the most interviews, which is different to university applications for most other subjects x

PiggyPokkyFool · 20/11/2019 18:42

Another one waiting to hear from Nottingham @Hattifatteners - if DD doesn't get an interview there she will shoot me as the only bit of interfering encouraging I did was suggesting she should apply there as she would have a good chance of an interview.
If you hear a news headline 'London Mum battered to death with 101 MMI questions book' you will know what happened.
It has been nice knowing you all.

SummerbodyIwish · 20/11/2019 19:20

That made me giggle Piggypoke

ladsmum · 20/11/2019 23:24

We are just waiting for Manchester. Last year DS's interview invite was sent on 23/11 (in one big batch I think), so I guess we'll hear soon.
Interviews lined up for Sheffield 5/12/19, Anglia Rushkin 9/12/19 (long train journey plus overnight so glad to have a Monday) and Sunderland 16/12/19. We gave Newcastle a miss this year as they would have asked for 3A* on resit (if his UCAT 2730 was even high enough for an interview). So much easier to understand applying "strategically" second time round. Feel really sad for some candidates on TSR that haven't chosen wisely :(

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2019 11:34

Hope BMAT results were OK for anybody waiting. The results are looking fairly low this year, average for S2 is between 3.5 and 4, which is low compared to previous years.

DS got e-mail from Cambridge yesterday confirming that he would get an interview, but not giving details. That was a nice thing for the college to do for people waiting anxiously, they can relax a bit whilst the admin of organising the interviews happens.

Tinkobell · 22/11/2019 16:43

@ladsmum and @Monkey2001....still rooting for your DC’s and great to hear the small positive steps forward! Keeping it all crossed!

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2019 18:50

Thanks @Tinkobell. 4 interviews here now, just hope he can convert at least one into an offer. Maybe DS and Ladsmum's lad will be joining your DD at Sheffield!

FiveHoursSleep · 22/11/2019 19:51

DD's application for Manchester was rejected because she didn't send in a Non- Academic Information Form. She didn't know she had to do that.
She's pretty upset as Manchester was her first choice,

speedyhedgehog · 22/11/2019 20:31

So happy for your ds monkey. And same as you, i hope all the bmat ers on here have got what they needed. So sorry about your dd fivehoursleep. That is a tough blow.

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2019 20:49

@FiveHoursSleep that is awful. Did she miss an e-mail? Most places chase the information they have not received - has she asked whether she can still submit it?

242Mummy · 22/11/2019 20:50

FiveHoursSleep oof that is tough! Can she explain to the uni? Did the email go into her junk folder?

242Mummy · 22/11/2019 20:50

Cross posted, Monkey2001!

FiveHoursSleep · 22/11/2019 21:18

She didn't get an email even though their website says she should have got one. She has emailed them pointing this out and asking if they would let her fill it out late. So fingers crossed.
She has good predicted grades/ GCSEs/ UCAT scores so should have been a shoo in for an interview :(

speedyhedgehog · 22/11/2019 21:31

🤞Everything crossed for her - poor girl if she didnt even get the email its unfair to penalise her so severely.

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2019 22:24

Yes, hopefully there will be a batch of people in the same situation so that they have a strong case between them. Have you/she checked on TSR to see whether there are others on the Manchester thread?

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2019 22:29

@FiveHoursSleep one thing I have seen mentioned on TSR is that school e-mail systems delete spam/junk mail. Did she use a school e-mail address?

FiveHoursSleep · 23/11/2019 08:29

@Monkey2001, no she has a gmail address.

SummerbodyIwish · 23/11/2019 09:18

Hi fivehours someone on TSR is in the same situation and didn't receive the email re the form for Manchester. Maybe it was a glitch and worth pursuing

MedSchoolRat · 23/11/2019 10:59

DD has interview at Kings in early December. :)
No news (so good news?) from the other 3 London Unis she applied to.

I am helping out with mock MMIs next week at her school.
I came up with a corker (I reckon) question, ha!

DD moaned mildly about friends (not medical applicants) with offers rolling in & who don't even have to interview.

emummy · 23/11/2019 12:01

We’ve had 2 rejections, waiting to hear from other 2. Fingers crossed, need to start planning for what to do if she doesn’t get anything.
