So tonight is "medic initiation" for DD ! Hope it's not as bad as I'm fearing!

muddlethro · 24/09/2018 22:33

Adrink...dread to think what a "medic initiation" entails...! ConfusedHope you manage to get some sleep tonight...keep us posted! 👍

swingofthings · 25/09/2018 07:41

Hi muddlethro my very good medic friend took that exact route albeit many years ago, St Andrews and then Manchester and said she loved Manchester which reassured me when DD decided to go there.

muddlethro · 25/09/2018 12:48

Thanks Swing, that's really good to know... 🤗

specialted · 25/09/2018 17:42

Dd just phoned which was nice, she sounds very happy. It seems pastoral Care is v good which is reassuring. Think they had a talk on mental health today and were told it's ok to take a year out and then return if you're struggling. Her medic parent is lovely, they are both v similar in lots of ways which is good. Think they all got pranked on day one in the med school which she laughed about. Afterwards anyway!

adrinkofwater · 25/09/2018 17:52

Well DD survived "medic initiation". It was apparently quite fun Hmm. No details given and I didn't ask!

mumsneedwine · 25/09/2018 18:06

I've just heard about the prank specialtd. Mine thought it was funny afterwards but was completely taken in. She FaceTimed and seemed so grown up and relaxed. Apparently they were told 10% of them will marry each other 😁. No candidates yet (or so she tells me). Was so lovely to see her so happy.

Katisha · 25/09/2018 20:14

Yes DS said they were shaking with worry during that prank and then delerious with relief afterwards!

specialted · 25/09/2018 20:19

Dds name was one of those on the list! She was mortified!

muddlethro · 25/09/2018 21:03

Adrink...glad to hear your DD survived the "medic initiation", although admiring your restraint...! Curiosity always gets the better of me...! 😝

mumsneedwine · 25/09/2018 21:28

My DD would've run away if her name had been on the list specialted !! Although her social media is pretty dull. Apparently last year the prank involved giving mouth to mouth so looks like they got away lightly. Tonight is jungle party I believe. Her major concern was finishing lectures at 6pm Monday and medic ball starting at 7. She's asking her parent about that

Mommymoomitzi · 25/09/2018 23:05

DD in full swing PBL now. It’s very different to school - they really need to be self directing, but DD loves it. Out to GP’s, Podiatrist, Drug and Alcohol, Ante Natal and Children’s Mental Health Unit - all before Christmas. They throw them right in the deep end at Plymouth. First exam in October - doesn’t that seem odd?

Movingmountains · 26/09/2018 07:11

Same at Sheffield Mommymoomitzi - DS starts at GP next week, yesterday I had a text to say they had been touching dead bodies! Not your usual text 😂
So far laundry has caused most stress - resulting in him having to hand wash his socks in the sink! Maybe it will make them appreciate their lovely Mums who used to do it all for them

swingofthings · 26/09/2018 07:23

Same as Manchester. Am amazed how few lectures they have but a lot of work expected for PBL sessions and preparation for topic so definitely suits those with self discipline better.

DD loves it, find PBL sessions very engaging and can now see how it stimulates learning.

Out in the community on a placement by December. It sounds so much fun I wish I'd done medicine... Except no way Iwoul have passed the first stage of the UK at :)

biscuit2000 · 26/09/2018 11:56

DD poorly already and missing today's sessions. Not used to the combined late nights and early starts. She went with a "medicine box" so already using cold and sore throat remedies. She's hoping it will pass quickly before lectures get into full swing.

muddlethro · 26/09/2018 13:13

Mommymoomitzi....my DS had exams last year (after reading week) at the very end of October, and it's the same this year apparently.
^
Biscuit2000...^sorry to hear your DD is ill 🤒...it's a good job she went prepared with a "medicine box"...at least it means she doesn't have to get dressed and drag herself to the chemist!

booface · 26/09/2018 13:30

Oh bless, they are all getting ill, hope they are all better soon. My DS is on the mend. Welcome week is such a germ mixer! I love that they are all struggling with laundry, to my shame my DS told me that people seem to be separating whites and colours, and is that a thing? Blush

Booface...if it's any consolation, my DS sent me a picture of a pile of dirty washing asking whether it could all go in together. Just as well he did, as managed to avert a laundry catastrophe! Lesson learnt, don't put light coloured T shirts in with new, dark denim jeans!! 😝

shank2 · 28/09/2018 10:32

My daughter is applying at the moment - I have asked questions on here before and have been reading back through a lot of the treads- something that sticks out is that a lot of people did not get interviews at Nottingham even though they thought they would/should? Any views on this?

mumsneedwine · 28/09/2018 11:44

It's hard to know how they score the PS I think. No one knows exactly what they are looking for.

Katisha · 28/09/2018 13:41

I have no real idea how DS got into Nottingham and yet was rejected from his other choices - I think all the scoring and so on can only get us so far and there comes a point where the medical schools go on their hunches or something...

oneteen · 28/09/2018 14:49

I do think Nottingham entry requirements are interesting because judging by scoring - UKCAT performance is quite important carrying 40 points. I could not see that they scored A level predictions but I guess this is not really that important if they set the offer after interview at AAA or above. It looks like 60 points out of 72 would hopefully get you an interview but given that 16 of these points are from PC/Reference...my guess is that they are probably looking for solid all rounders ..

Katsiha - sorry you may not want to disclose this information but what was your DS's UKCAT score? I remember your comment about being able to talk about volunteering and really grasp the issues - so I guess Nottingham probably score DC's who show real depth in there PS quite highly.

mumsneedwine · 28/09/2018 15:18

My DD there too and her stats were UKCAT 2780, 6A star, 4A and predicted 2 Astars A. Had week at GP, 3 days in a hospital and volunteered for 8 years at riding place. Did day at Liverpool on taster day and a day at conference at John Redcliffe hospital. She somehow got 4 offers from Sheffield, Liverpool and Southampton - think sometimes it's luck.

specialted · 28/09/2018 15:37

My dd got 2800 on ukcat. Not sure that her ps was any better than the majority, she did have lots of mentoring etc at school and music and sport but presume most had that. Lots of volunteering etc. And a job tutoring someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia. Maybe that helped? Who knows????

mumsneedwine · 28/09/2018 15:45

Oh forgot to mention the jobs. Posh hotel and Waitrose for 2 years which they seemed to like. Boy I miss my discount card (just as well youngest DD just started there. 😁).
