Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

Nice to read your post specialted, although my DS is coming towards the end of his second year - the workload has most definitely increased! Although he’ll do another year after this in St A’s, he has already been allocated his hospital in Manchester (MRI) for his clinical studies, which he is really looking forward to. Although I’m already wondering where the safest area to live might be, especially after hearing about the mugging of a junior doctor who’d just finished a shift at that hospital! Do wish I wasn’t quite such a neurotic parent!!
Hope all your DC are doing well too... 🤗

Movingmountains · 29/04/2019 18:20

The year has gone so quickly! DS revising hard for exams but says it is nowhere near as intense as A levels. What’s really lovely is to see how settled he is in his ‘new’ friendship group. They’re all off on a big holiday once med exams are over.

adrinkofwater · 30/04/2019 08:07

Yes it has gone quickly. DD is home for VB another week, then I think has a couple of weeks of lectures, before time to finish of the written work for the 2 SSCs they have done. Then exams - or rather exam singular! A lot of work for 1 exam! She has loved her first year though!

specialted · 30/04/2019 15:11

I think dd has six exams, 2 of which are practicals.

swingofthings · 30/04/2019 16:52

So nice to see this thread still going and once again, we are very much on the same wavelength as the feeling of bewilderment that the 1st year is almost over has it home here too. I can't believe how quickly the 'year' has gone and that soon enough, our children will be in year 2, some of them 'mums' or 'dads'.

Muddlethro, I hadn't heard about the mugging. DD has been feeling very safe despite traveling through rough patches on her way to work and I too felt safe, at least not worse than in our supposdedly safe town.

muddlethro · 30/04/2019 18:38

Swing, the mugging was a couple of years ago, so nothing recently. But reassuring to me that you and your DD feel safe.
It’s funny to think that my DS might meet your DD when he goes to Manchester in year three! Do you know whether your DD will be allocated a specific hospital? Or maybe that’s just for the St A’s cohort?

mumsneedwine · 30/04/2019 20:06

Evening all. Our house is in revision mayhem, DD getting ready for those 6 exams (waves at specialted), and DD2 has mock A levels starting tomorrow. And I'm marking so far too busy to worry (much). Be good when we get to end of June and have summer to look forward to. DD now on 2 committees and a peer thing (has a name but I forgot) and I believe has also done some work. I've been prodded and poked a bit as have most people who come near the house - reassuring to know my blood pressure, heart, lungs and joints don't sound too dodgy. And she sometimes comes out with medical stuff which makes us look at her and wonder where our little girl went.
About to start round 2 with DD2 for vet med Confused

booface · 30/04/2019 22:27

Great to see the thread back in action! Nice to hear all your news. I also can't believe that they are coming to the end of the first year. My DS is coming back for study leave on Friday night... it will be great to have him back. He is in catered accpmmodation, but last time he came back the way he attacked the fridge you would think he hadn't eaten all term!

He finally found a group and a place to live next year. Edinburgh is a lovely city, but accommodation is pretty expensive and loads of landlords seem to prefer to let with Airnbnb than to groups 5 second year lads (can't think why!!). He is in a place miles from the hospital as the others aren't medics, so we are figuring out how to get his bike up there for next term! It's going to be a hilly cycle...

The medic rugby "tour" to Prague was as debauched as you might expect.. no rugby was played and he came back minus his hair.... And to think some of them are 6th years who will be our doctors very shortly... Aghhhhh!!

But all in all, after a bit of while to settle in, I think it has been a good first year.

Hope exams go well for all our DS and DDs and then summer is on the way.

I have just found my way back into MumsNet via another thread & thought I'd take a look at your news. Impossible to believe it's been a year!
Lovely to hear how you (& DCs) are all getting on.
It's been a complicated year here but for now we are all crossing our fingers and toes. DD is presently applying to transfer after a year in BioMed, subject to sufficient places left, 2 more exams being sufficiently highly graded & references.
I will report back in a few months. Yes, another stressful summer, on top of DS sitting GCSEs.

specialted · 05/05/2019 10:02

Oh gosh Somerset, that sounds brill, keeping everything crossed for your dd. Would she join in year two or one? Really hoping you hear good news soon

SomersetS · 05/05/2019 10:24

Year 1 (kerchief). But she has gained masses in life experience, maturity, familiarity of the city, taken up her hobbies etc. Everything is crossed because I'm not sure any of us can take the disappointment of last summer. 🤦🏻‍♀️

SomersetS · 05/05/2019 10:25

kerching sorry.

specialted · 05/05/2019 11:41

Please keep us posted Somerset! Are you able to say which uni she's at?

SomersetS · 05/05/2019 15:45

Leicester for which she was holding a firm offer for medicine.
Long story involving disappointment, time, remarking, upgrades & serious illness.
We won't know until Aug apparently whether she's accepted for transfer. Thankfully she hasn't needed to do UKCAT again nor interviews though there is an application form, still needs volunteering or proof of commitment to Medicine & references.
I'm almost as worried as I was throughout 2018/19!
Hope all your DCs all enjoyed their first years.

Movingmountains · 05/05/2019 20:56

Fingers crossed Somerset - I so hope she is successful this summer. It is a long game this medicine business and I am sure her perseverance will pay off

adrinkofwater · 06/05/2019 08:18

Nice to hear from you Somerset! I'm glad you're DD has had a good year and has this opportunity! Really hope she gets it!

swingofthings · 07/05/2019 07:09

Thanks for coming back Somerset. Crossing all my fingers for your DD Flowers

booface · 07/05/2019 08:02

Really hoping it works out well for your DD, Somerset. She is a very resilient young woman by the sounds of things and will make a great doctor.

Baytreemum · 07/05/2019 14:54

Good luck Somerset DD - she deserves it after all this. Fingers mega-crossed for you both xxxx

Movingmountains · 26/05/2019 08:34

Can’t believe it’s a year since the stress of A levels. Must say first year med exams much less stressful for me with him not being at home 😂. Not sure DS would agree! He says he has been revising for 11-12 hours a day. At least they are over quickly - he has 3 exams in 3 days then results a week later. So no long summer wait this year. Then he is off with his medic friends on a tour of Eastern Europe. Not sure I’m going to get to see much of him!

specialted · 26/05/2019 10:59

Yes moving mountains this year has flown by! Glad ds will get exams and results over with quickly. He sounds like he's been working very hard. Dd just starting hers, she has six over three weeks then a wait of about three weeks after that for results. She is off to Zante (Confused) with home friends afterwards and will be back working at local private hospital after that filing notes to pay for it no doubt! She is very much looking forward to moving into a house next year, think she's had enough of halls with rigid meal times etc etc. And she wants to be with her medic friends, most of whom are in all in different halls to her .

mumsneedwine · 26/05/2019 12:09

Mine went to Zante last year - I tried not to think about it too much !!! Came home mostly in one piece 😁. DD working all
Summer (except for coming on holiday with us as she's missed her sister) as she wants to go travelling next summer and wants as much money as possible. Think she has 4 casual jobs now, including working at Royal Ascot (we can walk), and at a care home as an HCA. She's also helping at the Uni open days which they pay them for ! 2 exams down and 4 to go (including the dreaded anatomy spotter - speed dating with body parts it seems). Good luck to everyone

booface · 30/05/2019 10:43

My DS finished a week or more ago as he is in Edinburgh. Wow, first year gone already! Lovely to hear news of how all yours are getting on. He is in Amsterdam with a group of lads, less said about that the better probably! Then back for a summer of working and hopefully a bit of relaxing.

I look at the medicine 2019 board every now and then to see how they are getting on and feel v grateful that we have that year ahead!

OP posts:
booface · 31/05/2019 10:37

That last bit of my post didn't really make sense. What I meant to say was I am glad ours have their A levels behind them and are getting settled!

SomersetS · 22/06/2019 16:48

GCSEs over for DS. DD all set to apply for transfer 16 July.
In the meantime a bit of respite!
