Welcome to the new thread! Can't believe we are on the 4th already

This is the week when I realised all the stress of last year was totally worth it. Listening to DS absolutely buzzing because he has been ‘scrubbed-in’ and allowed to hold the camera in surgery was a joy to behold. He’s on a 2 week hospital placement getting a taste of being an actual doctor.

adrinkofwater · 17/01/2019 21:40

Oh wow! That must be so exciting for him! I don't think that DD has done anything quite so doctor like yetGrin

specialted · 18/01/2019 06:40

Movingmountains that sounds fab! Sheffield certainly get them going early! Dd def not done anything like that yet, in fact they've only just started dissection this term, which she absolutely loved.

Movingmountains · 18/01/2019 07:56

They definitely get them going early. He has been dissecting all last term. What’s also good is next week they have to do a ‘nursing’ placement so that they learn about other roles.
Funniest thing is him having to get used to early starts - he had to be at hospital for 7am - not sure he even knew that time existed 😂

specialted · 18/01/2019 09:08

Wow that's great! Am impressed. Can imagine the early starts would be challenging though!!

specialted · 19/01/2019 11:19

mumsneedwine have pm'd you

mumsneedwine · 19/01/2019 11:35

SmileSmilemine and specialted's daughters now know each other (I think we had a hand in it 😁). Mumsnet at its best.

ShalomJackie · 20/01/2019 08:46

Can I interrupt and ask you a question? It is genuinely for a friend! Her DS is in yr 13 and is under the impression that as he has had applied for medicine this year if he does not receive any offers he cannot apply next year as you can't apply for medicine in 2 consecutive years. Does anyone know if that is correct? It seems strange to me.

MarchingFrogs · 20/01/2019 09:09

ShalomJackie, no, that's rubbish. For a start, applications are 'wiped' at the end of the admissions cycle, so he can even spply to all the same medical schools again. But it might be an idea to look to see whether other places might better suit his strengths in the various 'components' of their entry requirements.

ShalomJackie · 20/01/2019 09:15

MarchingFRogs - thanks for your prompt reply.

Waitingforsherlock · 20/01/2019 09:20

@Movingmountains my ds is at Sheffield too and has really enjoyed his week of scrubbing up although says he was absolutely shattered by the end of it. Not sure what he’s up to next week

muddlethro · 20/01/2019 09:28

ShalomJackie...No, that is definitely not the case. On TSR I have read many instances of people applying year after year. Some have been on their third (consecutive) application cycle. Maybe point your friend in the direction of TSR, and even Mumsnet. I think they'll find many instances of repeated applications.... 🙂

Movingmountains · 20/01/2019 10:24

@Waitingforsherlock - think they are ‘nursing’ next week - DS says it will be making beds!!!! Hopefully he will learn some useful skills for life generally 😂

mumsneedwine · 20/01/2019 11:39

Was GPs for mine last week which she loved. She was surprised about how hands on she got and was carrying out various examinations and took lots of blood pressures as the Drs said it's good to practice. As I've had mine taken by her I know this can be a bit painful as she lets the air out v slowly !! Had a strange conversation about the dissection as she was so blase about cutting a chest open and removing muscle and then sawing ribs. Her sister called a psycho ! And clubbing on Friday seemed to be lots of medics as rest of Uni have exams. She's back off to her hospital placement in few weeks to do chest examinations I think. All sounds amazing to me that my little DD is doing all this stuff - I still think she's far too young !

Movingmountains · 24/01/2019 22:10

Mumsneedwine -saw your post on other thread about your DD have eye problems during dissection. I’ve no medical experience but have lots of problems with chemicals causing eye issues. I find using intensive tears or drops for contact lenses helps me so might be worth a try as it will moisturise eyes and stop chemicals having such a drying effect.

mumsneedwine · 25/01/2019 07:12

Thank you so much Movingmountains. I'll order some for her (her ability to get to Boots seems limited, even though there is one on campus - but it's up a hill !!). She said it's only when her head is really close to the inside of the body 😳

swingofthings · 25/01/2019 07:47

Lovely to see the thread still going on and that Some DCs got to meet through this thread!

In regards to re-applying, I thought it depended on the school, with many accepting re-appmicatiins, a few not, others accepting if rejected pre-interviews but not if rejected after interview?

DD continues to do well. Even though she is back home more often than most, I feel she has significantly moved on emotionally. Every time I see her again, I feel I discover a new person, one that sounds more and more like a clinician!

She's just had her first big exam counting towards final position going over all they've learned so far. She said it went better than she expected, whatever that is!

She too has really enjoyed her time in GP placements and has said she would consider going into General Practice which surprised me. They still have a long way to go to decide though!

booface · 05/02/2019 19:36

So my DS has given himself a reading week and is coming home for a few days next week. Not sure if this is really allowed, but I'll be pleased to see him! I think it's because his home friends who are studying different degrees are going to be back and he doesn't want to miss out. Anyone else coming home?

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 05/02/2019 19:50

Mine came home last weekend as was her sisters birthday. Was lovely to see her and she was so lovely when she visited my mum in her new care home. They offered her a summer job on the spot ! We all had our chests examined and heard all about removing lungs from a body (& the 92 year old retired doctor who helps them with dissection who sounds fab). She went back via the dog hospital in Luton where our poorly pooch was being treated. I hope to go up at some point (when I don't get in the way of Ocean !).

adrinkofwater · 07/02/2019 09:05

No visit home from my DD unfortunately, but we are going to visit in a couple of weeks at the end of half term which will nice! She had formative exams just after Christmas and had the results back this week and did really well Grin

specialted · 08/02/2019 07:42

Dd is coming home tomorrow for the night, to pick up a laptop apparently and get some washing done. Bit of a palaver with train strikes but will be lovely to have her home. Think they have a formative in a week or two. She has been rather freaked out by this poor student missing in hull as was at her favourite nightclub when she comes home. Cannot imagine what parents are going through. A lesson for them all to stick together on a night out.

Movingmountains · 10/02/2019 08:17

DS seems to be having the time of his life and it is too far for a weekend visit, so we’re going up to visit at half term. Found a lovely air bnb so he can also stay with us for the night if he wants to.
Think pressure has ramped up this term as he says the work is really hard - they’re doing neuroscience. There seems to far less going out as well.
Eldest DS is also having time of his life on a TEFL Erasmus scheme in Seville - it feels so lovely to have them both settled!

muddlethro · 12/02/2019 08:28

No visit here from DS, although he did take an 8 hour train journey to Bristol to see his girlfriend on Friday (must be love 😍). He assures me he managed to catch up with Friday's missed lectures via lecture echo over the weekend...! 😉And lectures were cancelled yesterday because of the fire at St A's, but not sure it's a great idea missing lectures voluntarily...! 😬
He is still really enjoying his course, especially the placements, and did extremely well in his end of semester exams, which was very reassuring, as he'd described them as very hard. Me being Mrs Half-empty thought he'd have to resit some of them...! 😱
I think he manages to get a good balance between work and relaxation - pub, football, gym, university cricket team etc...all helps him to stay sane! 🤗
Swing, you could well be right about re-applying. The students on TSR, as far as I can recall, weren't specific about which med schools they were re-applying to. I just remember feeling so sorry for them, but also quite inspired by their sheer determination and resilience....😊

muddlethro · 12/02/2019 10:06

Think I meant 'cup half-empty'...! 🙄

specialted · 27/04/2019 22:39

So dc are nearly at end of first year with exams looming! Dd home for another couple of weeks, she has a job at the local private hospital and assures me revision is under control. Only seems five minutes ago that they were revising for a levels! Hope all is well with everyone.
