Well DD enjoyed Southampton and thinks it went OK. Should know next week sometime. Drove herself and forgot to text us when she got there so I spent several hours worrying !! Said her group were all nice and students were really helpful with information - she pumped them so she doesn't have to go back.
She's decided to wait now until all decisions are through and if that means missing best accommodation at Notts then so be it. It's only for one year. I need a gin

Did you see HYMS just allocated another 90 places - 25 for 2018 & 65 for 2019. Wonder if that means more offers or leniency on results day???!?

Skiiltan · 20/03/2018 10:15

Further to SomersetS's post, the list of additional allocations for 2018, 2019 and 20120 is at www.hefce.ac.uk/lt/healthcare/ (click on the "Read more about..." link at the bottom of the page.

There will be new medical schools at Anglia Ruskin University (based in Chelmsford), Aston University (open to all, unlike the current Birmingham-only WP entry), Edge Hill University (from 2020), University of Kent/Christ Church Canterbury, University of Lincoln (in partnership with Nottingham) and University of Sunderland.

SomersetS
HYMS will have known about the extra 25 places for 2018 entry last summer, so they'll have taken it into account when making offers.

Has anyone heard from UEA or Liverpool? TSR reporting lots from UEA starting last week and just a few from Liverpool yesterday?

I seem to remember Liverpool mentioning the extra allocations at their open day, they said they had not had them confirmed but would expect to offer at least 50 more places (allowing I presume for not getting a full take up on those offers).

I am beginning to think, and am sure DD is too, that UEA is a no (or maybe waiting list, but she applied for deferred so I am not sure how a waiting list of work, so maybe just a 'no'), with only three days before offer holders it is very late in the day to make more offers.

Luckily HYMS were pretty organised and reasonably good at communicating - not quite up to Sheffield from what this thread has been saying about the now well known Julian... DD didn't apply there but based on others positive comments I would recommend giving Sheffield a visit to future applicants.

Surprised at the number of new medical schools - but it makes sense - training more new doctors in the UK can only be a good thing.

Now I have read the link, thanks skiiltan I can see how the allocation to the new schools is made - interesting but also HYMS does seem to have a good amount extra - I wonder how the split will work campus wise, Hull is definitely investing more money into fab new on site accommodation and the new medical building is spacious - between the two (Hull & York) there are a good number of linked hospitals too. I know there will always be a drop out when an applicant doesn't get their preferred campus IF they are lucky enough to have other offers, but it appears that Hull is gaining in popularity due to recent investment.
SomersetS did your DD sign up for York offer holders in the end? Or has she lost her heart to another.....

Report
SomersetS · 20/03/2018 14:29

2B1G DD agreed to sign up for York Offer Day but there is no doubt that HYMS have lost her initial enthusiasm because of their inflexibility & communication. She will choose Leicester I'm certain post Offer Day, they put in a great show, but we are still waiting on Liverpool. No news here yet but have seen TSR rumblings.

Anyone got any news on Bristol offers. My son is still waiting to hear after an interview which seems an age ago. He is in a lucky position of having other offers, but just wants to hear from them before making his firm. I expect he is on a waiting list and won't hear either way until people turn them down? Is that how it works?

Movingmountains · 20/03/2018 18:12

Booface I think Bristol gives offers out until April. My DS got one end of Feb but they are still interviewing. I think most people don’t hear until End March or early April- that’s what DS was told at his interview which was back last November - so I wouldn’t worry. Although it is frustrating as with my DS waiting for Liverpool still as it means you can’t make any decisions

Thanks moving mountains. Amazing that interviews are still going on. It seems so late somehow. But I suppose it all takes time. But would really like to know one way or other on Bristol, then assuming my DS loves Edinburgh as much as he's hoping when we go to the open day next week, then he can make it his firm. We will see!

Booface, two years ago DD had all three interviews Bristol/Birmingham/KCL in mid March, all in the same week. No wonder I still feel traumatised. She seems to have recovered.

Bristol and Birmingham interviewed their SEN candidates at the same time, so presumably had to have them at the end of the cycle. This meant there were only four at the Birmingham interview. In contrast they seem to have filled spaces at the Bristol interview by inviting some at the last minute. DD had been told to expect to have to wait a few weeks, though luckily offers/rejections came through more quickly.

Liverpool update - I think I can confirm the rumours that deferred entry offers are coming first is true - DD got an offer on track yesterday! Good luck to the rest waiting for 2018 entry I am sure it won't be long before you hear.

Congrats to your DD 2B1Gmum!! Great news! Has she heard from everyone now? What is her first choice?

Thank you both, she had two offers yesterday - really pleased for her. She was surprised about Liverpool she had what she felt was her worst interview station, so thought she might have blown it.

I don't know where she will choose, she knows my favourite is about familiarity and travelling times (UEA) - but until she has re visited for accommodation, more info. on course etc. she won't decide. Even my mother, who would love her to be at at UEA too as it is 50 mins away, said 'it is obviously entirely her choice and she mustn't listen to anyone else'. Believe me, that is not like my mother!!

Congratulations on the offers and to every one else now relaxing 😉

My DS is in year 2 at UEA so please ask if we can help with anything.

On a general note for everyone, remember that having a relatively easy journey to and from home is a real bonus as the terms get longer and the breaks get shorter. DS has 11 working days off for Easter so not losing two of those days to travel is good. It's about 1hr 45 from us so easily doable in a day for a driver.

Also your DC might feel more inclined to come home for the weekend if it's not too far...... You can't really do long weekends as they are whole week attendance courses so the best you can hope for is somewhere near enough to travel on Friday night.

2B1GMum that is fantastic. Can feel my anxiety levels starting to rise. Come in Liverpool!

Gosh. Who would think of all this decision making back on 15th Oct.

So pleased for your DD.

We have a choice Smile DS just been offered Southampton.

Now has to choose between there and St Andrews, so a lovely choice to make.

Fantastic news watfordmummy 🎉😊. I guess Southampton is a lot closer to home than St.Andrews....could that ‘swing’ it for your DS do you think...🤔.

Lovely to hear of all the offers coming in. Wow Watfordmummy those two choices are far away from each other! We have something similar with Southampton, Newcastle and Edinburgh to choose from! I wonder which your DS/DD will go for. My DS is leaning towards Edinburgh but waiting for open day next week to make final decision. It's 6 years of course, which to me seems a bit of a draw back, but he seems undeterred!

Interestingly the thought of doing 3 years in St Andrews and then next years somewhere else is appealing towards him.

Watfordmummy, that’s partly what appealed to my DS about St. A’s . He also loved the idea of living in the town itself...it’s a pretty special and unique place to live! He says the medical school is a great learning environment, and the anatomy teaching with cadaver dissection underpins what they are taught in the lectures. It also has a very friendly and supportive atmosphere.
It was his first choice and he has no regrets with the decision he made....😊
