booface, as far as I have found out, you are. Although I'd be very happy for others to confirm!! I also contacted NHS bursaries to confirm that English students studying in Scotland still have their final year fees paid by the NHS. They confirmed that they do.

booface · 09/03/2018 20:51

Many thanks for the replies. That is what we thought, but good to know. And I hadn't even thought about the funding for the last year, so that's all very reassuring!

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2018 09:02

In Somerset Somerset 😁😂😂. The vet school is massive - but like all those big hospitals we've been visiting. I'm looking forward to having a nose around

Movingmountains · 10/03/2018 12:38

OMG mumsneedwine can't believe you are starting whole process again! 😱
Off to Sheffield offer day next weekend and hoping to meet up with DS1 - also hoping DS2 still loves Sheffield!

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2018 13:02

We are going on the April one as DD away next weekend on training camp for her month summer expedition. I've not been to Sheffield yet so looking forward to it. Hopefully the journey will be easier than for her interview - that involved a 7.5 hour trip in v heavy snow.

Movingmountains · 11/03/2018 11:01

Happy Mothers Day to you all! Hope you are having stress-free days and thanks for all the support you have given me in this group.

swingofthings · 11/03/2018 11:24

mumsneedwine, all my admiration for getting ready for another round. You'd think it would be easier second time round but I bet it isn't as the tasks at sake remain the same.

It sounds like quite a few are off to offer days now and in the coming weeks. Would love to hear what people's feelings are of these days, and whether it confirmed their choice or not.

DD will be making the trip to Manchester on her own as I have to be elsewhere and all her friends are committed to their studies. Was worried about the costs, but DD will start embracing the student life, going up on nationexpress bus (9 hour trip!!) rather than the train and staying at the hostel, which does look very nice (nothing like what it was like when I was travelling around Europe many donkey years ago!). The difference in price is amazing though, travelling all the way from the South and staying two nights, in a private room (ha ha, that again didn't exist in my time!), all for under £100 (£66 for the two nights, which would have been £30 if in a dorm and £24 for the bus).

Got lovely flowers from DD this morning, a very nice touch. Nothing from DS but a promise to clean his room this morning... can't hear much happening there... Happy Mother's day everyone.

SomersetS · 11/03/2018 13:50

Mother's Day & no kids! Very relaxing indeed.
DD at a swim competition, left 7am (knew learning to drive was a good idea) & DS on Dartmoor for weekend Ten Tors training. Boy will he be soggy & stink when he gets back tonight! Deep joy tomorrow sorting that lot out. 🤧

mumsneedwine · 11/03/2018 14:14

Shopping for her Central America trip here. Awesome news yesterday that Bristol & some other Vet schools have stopped interviewing - one less hurdle to crack. And no exam except for a few. Now just need months of work experience with cows 😁.
We have discovered a handy train from Reading to Sheffield direct which makes that journey so much easier for DD - no having to go via London.
Southampton interview will be either 19th or 28th - will find out this week. By end of March it should all be over.

2B1Gmum · 11/03/2018 17:05

Offer holders yesterday at Hull, DH loves driving so managed it in a day - 8 hours driving! I read a book and dd sniffed and coughed and slept - her turn to get really heavy cold (I won’t call it flu) but she is struggling. Somerset I can see why your dd was so keen on Hull, HYMS has a great feel regardless but Hull has certainly invested cleverly over the last year or two. Very good accommodation 5 mins walk max from new medicine building with a new complex being built with more fab rooms, campus nightclub rather close too, Hmm sweet student showing us round said you get in cheaper after midnight and it closes at 3 am. Might explain the lack of students up and around! Great refurb of the library too - with a small but decent art collection (my idea of impressive not dds). Of course offer holders days are up beat and are selling to you - I just wish it was a little nearer to homeSad. If I was asked by the next cohort I would recommend Hyms on their list to visit, provided PBL suits.

Spoke to one other mum there whose D.C. is waiting to hear from Bristol and Liverpool - rejected pre interview from Exeter. Has another dc who is an F1 who studied at Southampton after gap year application (had to resist chem). Overheard another saying they had Cardiff and Leicester but one interview was horrid and not at all friendly so was pro Hull because friendly helpful feel. Don’t know which one was horrid - was tempted to ask!

Swing I hope your dd loves manchester. Be interested to hear - but won’t tell dd what she might have missed! I know it is a fun uni with lots going on.

Hope others have positive experiences - easy to be swayed by smart new rooms, but also useful to hear about the realities of the long terms; self discipline, exams etc!

Hilarious and enthusiastic student at the talk telling it warts and all and looking nervously at his tutors was also enlightening.

specialted · 12/03/2018 13:17

2B1gmum were there lots of parents at the offer day? DD has hers at nottingham in april but she doesn't want me to come. I have visited the uni before but still would like a peek at her accommodation etc. She asked me to find out if parents came too on the whole or not.

2B1Gmum · 12/03/2018 13:31

Hi specialted, yes there were a lot of parents, 90% ish and often two parents (and looked like some siblings?). More than I expected tbh but I think because most had visited York but not Hull and also the interviews were at York so for many this was their first visit. We arrived late morning, not for the full day, which was fine as there were talks we were happy to miss. If your dd has the timetable for the day you could see if it is possible for you to just do a tour of the accommodation and then jump on the tram and go into Nottingham.

We did offer holders for DS1 for Engineering at Nottingham (5 years ago), the parents were split from the students for some of it which was a good idea. There was a bus tour of the campus and we were only shown one accommodation block. I would say on that occasion only one student didn't have a parent with them.

SomersetS · 12/03/2018 13:40

Glad you liked Hull! We going to Leicester on Sat. I didn't go with DD for interview so little idea of what to expect.
York the following weekend but DD still so dismayed that we may cancel. Not sure she's ever going to come round to it.

specialted · 12/03/2018 15:59

Thanks 2B1G, will def try to persuade DD that I need to be there. Bit odd that Nottingham's days are on a wednesday rather than a weekend, means missing another day of school but there you go. DD keen to meet other people she will be studying with.

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2018 19:29

OMG. Nottingham offer just came through 😁. V happy DD but that's her top 2 so needs to think hard. Still doesn't know when Southampton interview is - she says she'll still go just to make sure she makes the right choice. Anyone know when Notts offer days are ?

specialted · 12/03/2018 19:35

Yay mumsneedwine!! Brilliant news about nottingham!! Huge congratulations to DD. Think offer days are 14th and 21 march or 25th april. DD going to April one as she figures she'll miss less essential stuff at school by then. She has put sheffield as her insurance too!

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2018 19:45

Mine not sure which way to put them yet. Worried about Notts accommodation as they do on first come basis so she could have missed chance of being on campus (some medics end up in Derby). Might need a few phone calls to ask about it I think.

Thanks for the dates - Weds is a pain as a 3 hour journey for us and doesn't want to miss any more lessons.
Never thought we'd end up here - with an actual choice

Movingmountains · 12/03/2018 20:04

Congratulations to your DD mumsneedwine. Difficult decisions but great place to be in. Most unis don’t start allocating accommodation until later on as at the moment most wont have done firm and insurance decisions yet.

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2018 20:14

Thanks so much. I really am in shock as never expected her to have a choice. This thread has kept me sane over the last few months. Not sure she can make the offer days so trying to arrange a visit via a friends DD who is a 3rd year there. My 🥂 consumption is going up !!!

SomersetS · 12/03/2018 20:32

Fantastic news Mumsneedwine!
May the offers keep on trickling in for everyone.
Agree, this site had definitely helped to keep me positive & informed.

muddlethro · 12/03/2018 20:42

Wow, that’s fantastic mumsneedwine, it’s a wonderful situation to be in. Bet your DD is thrilled....🎉🎈😊

specialted · 12/03/2018 20:44

mumsneedwine, I was concerned about accommodation deadline too so I emailed notts and they said that by 31 march they should still have plenty of rooms available on campus (although may not be zone or type of room of your choice).

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2018 20:47

Ah thank you all so much. She is thrilled and I can see the confidence it's given her - to be wanted is a wonderful thing. It's tempered by some of her old school friends getting rejected today though. Strategic applying and just being yourself seem to pay off. Now must stop the 🥂 as have 5 hours of teaching tomorrow - with a big fat grin 🤪

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2018 20:48

And thank you specialtd that's very good news !

booface · 13/03/2018 08:04

Lovely to see more offers coming in! Congrats to you and your, such nice news to see this morning. Have fun starting to make plans. And best wishes to those waiting on news. Hopefully there will be another flurry soon.
