Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Meant to write 5 or 6 years!

2B1Gmum · 24/11/2017 09:41

BMAT does throw up issues of its own, DD decided against it, luckily all her choices were UKCAT - although there were a couple we might have considered at one point. Time will tell whether she did the right thing.

JulyAphrodite · 24/11/2017 09:47

Its hard isn't keep thinking should have applied here or there but can't change anything now just have to hope for the best :)

2B1Gmum · 24/11/2017 10:10

DD is my third of three, eldest did Engineering and first choice was also his insurance, DS2 gap change of plan and very happy with choice - my moto has become 'everything happens for a reason'. Engineering graduate currently working in retail and applying for graduate roles - more tests, more interviews. DH changed jobs in the summer, Planning application refused, but everyone is fit and healthy and sense of humour still intact most of the time.Smile

Hi adrinkofwater, panel interview at Plymouth on 5th December - she is less nervous about this than MMI. Great news that your DD got through Bristol interview and was happy (ish) they are always so super critical of themselves! Not hearing until May is a shock. Hoorah for the Next clothing win! 2B1Gmum - I think it's great that your DD is getting so much interview practice, I'm sure it will really help. I think the mums in this thread are very similar - our DC are our world and we do everything we can. My DD has friends who want to study medicine, but their parents don't support them one jot 😕 Looking forward to hearing the next piece of news, exciting/nervous times

Abra1d · 24/11/2017 15:59

I think it would be very hard to apply and get a place for medicine without having parents or teachers to double check the rationale behind your choices and carefully check the small print on med school websites where small but significant bits of information about requirements may lurk. And act as a reality check and devil’s advocate.

Especially when you’re studying hard too.

My son did History and we didn’t even go to open days with him as he knew what he wanted and it was so much less complicated.

2B1Gmum · 24/11/2017 16:29

Exactly, and now I keep re reading Liverpool's website, it was the first we visited and we didn't really know what to listen out for, they are quite new to using UKCAT so play its significance down - but when a University says personal statement is the most important factor it is really hard to work out how they compare them, surely the majority of applicants have decent personal statements. Best tip from HYMS on their application was don't to 4 A levels, stick to 3 and get at least AAA - they will turn down anyone with less including AABB. However, Liverpool said, you can apply even if you are not predicted AAA. Interesting statement to make. All this information should get filtered back to schools for future applicants.

JulyAphrodite · 24/11/2017 16:44

Thats interesting what you say about the 4th Alevel as the talk in Southampton said that if it goes to a tie break situation they will always opt for the one taking 4 or an EPQ

2B1Gmum · 24/11/2017 18:42

interesting, which is why visiting is a good idea, UEA said they won't make EPQ a requirement but there is a good chance of a small scholarship if you get an A*, DD's school only just started sixth form and just decided to add EPQ, a bit late in the day to worry about doing it now - but I think it does have some value and may become more relevant with all the reforms to exams going on.

DD visited Southampton campus with her school and I think they had general talk from admissions - so in the end it came off the list - but it was on for several weeks, then we discovered Manchester's criteria (which we are hoping still stands!?) and that she liked the look of the course.

She hasn't chosen any less than 3 hours awaySad

Preeti74 · 24/11/2017 23:41

I asked my DD to check her spam folder last night,as she had not received anything from any of the universities. She had 5 general emails from Birmingham, one saying that they’ll be sending out the interview offers by end November, similar one from Newcastle and a scholarship offer for her back up course from Newcastle 😅😅

Preeti74 · 24/11/2017 23:42

Was just wondering if any would have gotten deleted because the emails in your spam folder automatically get deleted after 30 days

Mommymoomitzi · 25/11/2017 06:27

Preeti!!!!!! Yay! 👍👍👍 Where did she apply to? Did she get acknowledgement e mails from the unis confirming that they had received her application?

HoneywithLemon · 25/11/2017 07:50

It's possible not to hear until May. The reason being that offers are made but it can't be know how many will be accepted as a firm choice. Medical schools will keep back a number of applications and wait until April/May to decide whether to offer or not. They have to fill their places and it's not an exact science. Going over or under can be a disaster.

swingofthings · 25/11/2017 08:35

I have been telling DD to check her junk mail for some time, which at first she told me wasn't necessary because she never gets anything in her that box and she'd received all her confirmations in her normal inbox, but I have now pestered her enough about it that she does check it. Like you though Preeti, I wonder if there might have been something coming in the early days that would have automatically been deleted. Hopefully not!

Great news about the scholarship.

Preeti74 · 25/11/2017 08:42

Yeah really happy about the scholarship, although it’s for her back up choice ( Bio Medical sciences). She applied to Birmingham,Bristol,Newcastle and Sheffield😊

Mommymoomitzi · 25/11/2017 09:11

Preeti74 - if I were you I would telephone the admission offices, they are generally very nice. Explain your concerns, that way you are not worrying!

Preeti74 · 25/11/2017 09:24

That’s a good idea Mommymoomitzi!!! I’ll do that on Monday. Thanks😊

2B1Gmum · 25/11/2017 09:44

Preeti74, spam boxes are great when they work, but well done for getting your DD to check, I check mine everyday and there is always one email that isn't spam hidden amongst all the bizarre ones... Mommymoomitzi is right, best to reassure yourself and DD with a few phone calls. Your DD is probably way more techy than me, but just in case, make sure she clicks on 'not spam' on her Birmingham emails so that they come into the right folder from now on. Also I don't think any Unis gave offers earlier than 30 days ago, but there is usually a way to look for binned or deleted emails.

Looking at usual sources, Bristol as this thread can confirm takes their time; Birmingham started sending interview invites to a small batch of UK applicants just over 2 weeks ago, but plenty haven't heard as they carry on in 3 batches apparently (?) I don't think internationals have heard. But phone calls should answer your questions. And congrats on the Bio Medical scholarship offer - that is something to be proud of.

Preeti74 · 25/11/2017 10:01

Thanks B1Gmum😊 She already moved the emails to her inbox and marked those as not spam. Have asked her to check with the tech dept in her school if they can retrieve the deleted junk mails,as she’s been receiving those on her school id.

adrinkofwater · 27/11/2017 20:59

I noticed on the student room that some interviews went out for Newcastle and Leicester today. Hope that was good news for some of you!

SomersetS · 27/11/2017 21:33

I noticed in TSR that Leicester started issuing again but no news here yet. Fingers & toes crossed but we are agreed that what will be will be. Good luck.

swingofthings · 28/11/2017 13:36

First interview invite for DD Grin Grin

Gosh, I now know what it feels like and it's very nice indeed! St George om the 18th December.

JulyAphrodite · 28/11/2017 13:48

Well done SOT :)

Preeti74 · 28/11/2017 14:15

Wow...congratulations 🎉🎊

Hummingbird21 · 28/11/2017 14:20

So pleased for your DD (& you!!) swingofthings! Still no invites here yet :(
I'm hoping they'll be like buses...you wait ages for one & then several come all at once!
