Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Great news SOT! Hope everyone gets some good news soon!

Mommymoomitzi · 28/11/2017 14:38

Swing of things! I couldn't be more happy for you! Good luck to DD 😘👍

Preeti74 · 28/11/2017 14:49

None here either☹️

swingofthings · 28/11/2017 15:00

Thank you Flowers Crossing fingers that everyone gets their first one very soon, but indeed, I expect it's very much like buses! Not very clear how StGeorge operates as invites seem to be sent on a trickle with a few each day or so and can't work out whether it is totally random or not. According to the medicportal, invites are expected anytime in December and January with interviews all the way until April, so even though it felt like a very long wait, DD was probably amongst the first invites.

Mommymoomitzi · 28/11/2017 15:11

Preeti74 - did you call them?

SomersetS · 28/11/2017 15:27

Well done SwingofThings - delighted for you & DD!

Preeti74 · 28/11/2017 16:39

Yes,they didn’t send out any invites to international students, during the first 2 weeks😅

Preeti74 · 28/11/2017 16:40

Birmingham and Bristol said, they would be sending the invites out in batches until February 😓😓

proudwhatever · 28/11/2017 17:21

Well done to mums with new interviews at UEA and St. Georges very exciting so much work to get to this point!!!

2B1Gmum · 28/11/2017 23:00

Great news Swing of things - for you both. I hope the interview is at a good time and leaves room for a bit of exploring after. Maybe even jump on the Northern Line to Borough market! We have HYMS next week, suddenly seems a bit too soon - but the advantage is there are no other distractions so DD can become an expert on their course and why she chose HYMS etc. in readiness.

swingofthings · 29/11/2017 07:20

Thank you all. 2B1Gmum, interview is at 1pm so perfect. Coming from the south coast, will probably take train to Clapham Junction and go from there. Can't leave too early or it's double the price of the fare!

adrinkofwater, how is your DD holding up with the wait to hear back from Bristol? I read on the tsr thread that offers can come a week after interviews. I can only guess that the wait for this is 100 times more stressful than waiting for the invite to interview. Crossing my fingers for your DD.

As anyone else done interviews already? Which day is the interview next week 2B1Gmum?

Hummingbird21 · 29/11/2017 09:12

Finally DS has an interview! He received one from Glasgow last night for two weeks time. Booked our flights & now digging out the thermals, it was -3 there yesterday!

Stevie3 · 29/11/2017 10:00

Hello all
Very late into the thread but hope you don't mind if I join - fab to see all the support around. DD also applied to medicine this year and I share all the sentiments posted!! Such a busy and nerve wracking time all round!
Deep in prep here for interview at Bristol next week - never realised how much was needed - as medic myself totally in awe of how much our DC's need to cover to get into medicine these days!!
Good luck to all waiting on news and who also have interviews Smile

adrinkofwater · 29/11/2017 10:39

Welcome Stevie! Hope all goes well for your DD next week at Bristol!

Great news about the Glasgow interview Hummingbird!

Things fairly stressful in our house at the moment Swing! Basically I think there's too much going on - catching up with work from 2 missed days at school, Chemistry test today, driving theory test tomorrow, her 18th party on Friday (which is main source of verbal stress!) After feeling fairly OK when she came out of Bristol interview she says the more she thinks about it the worse she feels it went (fairly normal I think). But, although she has 1 interview on 8th and another on 11th she has done no further prep at all as she has so much else on and is not willing at the moment to miss doing anything! Hopefully next week after said party!
I think what is especially tough about the wait to hear from Bristol is that they were told "exceptional" people could hear after a week or 2, most people probably in March, but some not until May. But that's just the way it is! We aren't talking about the Bristol one, but I do wish she'd do some prep for the others!

2B1Gmum · 29/11/2017 11:21

On Drinkofwater, what a manic couple of weeks for your DD. I think they are all doing loads of tests at school but obviously that is a good thing, but as you say 18th birthdays also taking over, my DD's very soon too. Bristol do seem a little cruel, I understand their honesty but how many teenagers, even the exceptional ones, believe that of themselves! My DDs melt down this week was as a result of her being kind and helping the drama dept with their lighting board, I don't quite understand not having a clue myself, but all her work saved for the performances on her friends A level piece got lost when some year 10s started playing around with things. DD in tears because she then realised she should be focussing on medicine interview but cannot let her friends down. I am pretty cross and want to tell the drama teachers to sort it not my daughter - but of course she won't let me. She went into school VERY early this morning. Swingofthings we have an afternoon interview too, it is next Thursday so allows time for the long journey to York and back in a day - just. I get to wander around the York Minster, which I am looking forward to - love a cathedral but not for religious reasons:) Although I may well say a prayer when I am there.... and Welcome Stevie - good luck with Bristol.

swingofthings · 29/11/2017 12:06

Fantastic news Hummingbird, so pleased for you too. Let's hope everyone else still wanting for the first invite follows very soon.

Welcome Stevie. Where else has your DD applied. It is nice to hear that it is even harder now to win that place because it certainly feels incredibly daunting!

Adrinkofwater and 2B1Gmum hugs to you and your DDs. It's hard to manage the hikes in Adrenalin and then the feeling when everything feels overwhelming. So much going on at the same time. I'm sure the theory will be a breeze compared to the UKCAT though! DD took the two tests at the same place, she said she liked doing the theory test much better! Happy 18th birthday to your DD and yours 2B1Gmum and good luck for Thursday. Never been to York but would love to. Like you, I'm not religious but love to visit cathedrals, I always feel very calm and at peace in these huge majestic buildings.

2B1Gmum · 29/11/2017 13:34

Hummingbird, just saw your news, all the best to you both and enjoy your visit. I spent New Years Eve 1999 in Glasgow when DD was just three weeks old with a load of friends and all their children (12 children under 6) happy memories - little did we know then that babies and toddlers are a breeze!

mumsneedwine · 29/11/2017 13:54

Theory test will be a doddle after UKCAT !! Mine been driving over a year now and glad she got it out the way - one less thing to do (& means I have a free taxi home after a night out 😁).

Stevie3 · 29/11/2017 14:03

Thank you all for the lovely welcome Smileand very best wishes to all the birthday people. Congrats hummingbird to your DS and you - have a good friend who works at big hospital there, he has loved working in Scotland and enjoy York 2B1Gmum. DD has applied to UEA, Liverpool and Southampton plus Bristol - very hard when some are much later in starting to send invites - nervous times - thank heavens for A levels to take your mind off thingsConfused

2B1Gmum · 29/11/2017 15:00

Hi again Stevie3, my DD has also applied to UEA and Liverpool, her fourth being a last minute decision - Manchester. We visited UEA, Liverpool and HYMS, she liked them all and would be thrilled for any more interviews. Since applying for Liverpool I realise we didn't take too much notice of how they pick for interview, but as you say it will be a much later invite so not dwelling on it too much. UEA again, not terribly sure, I know some invites have gone out but they take their time and carry on for a while yet, it seems very popular on this thread and I can understand why - but I am biased as I grew up in Norwich.

2B1Gmum · 29/11/2017 16:28

Good friend of DDs has received an interview from Keele, she is very excited - apparently they do a maths test...

Mommymoomitzi · 30/11/2017 06:59

Hi everyone! Gosh, the thread has been busy and full of great new! (Great news hummingbird 👍) Nice to see Stevie3 here. DD is busy preparing for Plymouth on Tuesday, we are going down on Saturday and making a mini break of it. The panel of interviewers don't know anything apparently, have not even seen PS, so it really is a level playing field for all. So Bristol start sending out offers soon? DD not even heard back from them yet, although it was her 4th choice, so she really isn't worried about that one. It's getting very real now. DD didn't put a 5th choice down, so no plan B - gosh, thank goodness the stress of Christmas is taking over!

watfordmummy · 30/11/2017 07:00

DS prepping for interview at St Andrews next week. Fingers crossed for all interviews next week.

He's wearing his sixth from suit, but tie no tie? White shirt or other? Can't believe we haven't made a decision on this already!!

Thoughts please lovely MN Smile

sluj · 30/11/2017 08:01

Hi Watfordmummy.
My DS wore his suit as did 90% of the boys. The others wore jackets and trousers. It doesn't really matter about the colour of the shirt but if you are wearing a suit, you need the tie.
Good luck in St Andrews

adrinkofwater · 30/11/2017 10:13

Hi Watfordmummy, when my daughter was in Bristol for her interview I saw 1 boy in trousers and a shirt (no tie) and the rest were in suits and ties. Can't remember any colours!
