Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Mommymooitzi
She will apply next year as she miss this year.

Mommymoomitzi · 16/11/2017 22:17

You need some advice, now. Call a private college in London called MPW (Mander Portman Woodwood). They will give you advice and tell you what your next steps should be

Mommymoomitzi · 16/11/2017 22:19

Kiddle - I am telling you this, as international students have different standards to meet. Good luck

Kiddle · 16/11/2017 22:19

Ok.
Thanks mommymoomitzi

Sorry, my last post was a response to the poster talking about a mock-MMI, with the psychiatrist!

2B1Gmum · 17/11/2017 09:20

Thank you Abra1d, I think having a slightly odd mock interview did her a favour, I am hoping having two argumentative older brothers might too - she can be very nervous and will be at first, but she won't be afraid to defend her argument (just hope its one worth defending) if she needs to. The HYMS 3 page information sheet is very detailed, and they clearly want interviewees to feel prepared and at ease. They seem to advise booking accommodation because of 'unreliable trains' in the winter, I have an on going complaint with Virgin trains that got resolved yesterday after a year!

Abra1d · 17/11/2017 09:35

My son’s at York, not for medicine, though, and has loved the city.

2B1Gmum · 17/11/2017 09:46

I have loved every university I have visited with DD and 2 DS, perhaps because I didn't got to University and I am so glad mine have the chance, my DH also left school at 16! DS2 got a York offer in clearing, long story, but took a gap year instead but one of his really good friends is there and enjoying it, studying Politics - and I recently found out an old babysitter is now a lecturer - History of Art I think.

Abra1d · 17/11/2017 11:39

Good place to visit, too, which children applying should always think about. Would their mothers enjoy a trip here? Wink

sluj · 17/11/2017 11:47

And of course "Is there a John Lewis"? Grin

2B1Gmum · 17/11/2017 12:00

Oooh the John Lewis question, there is one at Norwich, they took over an old family department store... DS2 at Durham, lots of little shops, beautiful city and cathedral, no space for a John Lewis on The Bailey :)

sluj · 17/11/2017 12:02

I have already found the Norwich one with my year 2 medic. Actually all of Norwich was a lovely surprise 😁

Abra1d · 17/11/2017 12:10

My daughter at Birmingham is already the butt of jokes because she arrived in her self-catered flat with some Duchy Originals frozen peas, which my husband had bought at Waitrose (of course) had run out of the Essentials ones.

When we took her out for lunch and we popped into JL to do some shopping she said she was now irredeemably tarnished with south-of-England middle-classedness.

2B1Gmum · 17/11/2017 12:34

I send my son treat parcels to Durham because the 5 rugby playing housemates shop together at a big Tesco and it is all about bargain prices for as much protein based food as possible. I was worried he would be teased about the parcels but it turns out all the rugby mums do it!

Abra1d · 17/11/2017 13:13

Phew!

SomersetS · 17/11/2017 15:42

Finally DD got an interview for Sheffield too 🎉🎉
January so no rush thankfully. So glad my hard work investigating choices paid off.
Might relax tonight.
Have a great weekend ladies & gents.

mumsneedwine · 17/11/2017 15:55

Yeah Somerset. I’ve been checking back to see your good news. Mine is first date and yours could be last. Let’s hope they both get through this next hurdle

2B1Gmum · 17/11/2017 16:28

Congrats to your DD and you SomersetS. My DD only one of three at school to hear so far, but I am not sure of the others choices, DD playing it low key at school but she told head of year who was very pleased for her. She is still on a high at home, we have just booked train tickets in an effort to get a bargain (never seem to though), and had another look at Hull website, it does look impressive.

Hummingbird21 · 18/11/2017 12:09

It's so encouraging to hear of all the interviews coming through but very frustrating for my DS as none of his four choices have sent any out yet, it's going to be a very long wait!
On the plus side he did get an offer yesterday from his 5th choice which was a nice ego boost!

SomersetS · 18/11/2017 12:22

Thank goodness for the fifth choices!

Hang on in there Hummingbird21. We are still waiting on 2 which don’t expect to hear from until Jan now.

mumsneedwine · 18/11/2017 12:30

We are waiting 3 and think all are January.

swingofthings · 18/11/2017 12:51

Waiting here for all 4 too :) I think it is mainly hard reading about others having moved to next stage but in the light of things the situation is no different.

DD is taking the waiting well and on a positive note seems very focussed on her A levels and mock exams. It's me who is more desperate to know but that's also because I'm due to start a new job and it's hard to plan my own life around hers!

Good luck to those who've got interviews coming this week. Is it possible they could hear soon afterwards? I understand some Do, others wait until all have been interviewed and others are a mixture of both!

mumsneedwine · 18/11/2017 12:52

Mine has interview beginning of December but won’t hear til 1st March. So long wait again. Maybe all this waiting is to get them used to the NHS lists 😂

SomersetS · 18/11/2017 14:06

Or Patients! (Boom boom)

Abra1d · 18/11/2017 14:55

My daughter had an interview at cardiff on 30 November, heard back in February half term, which was when everyone seemed to hear.

Interview at Nottingham in early Nottingham, heard back in February or possibly early March.

Interview at Birmingham mid-January, heard back in early March.
