Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

I lived in Norwich age 9 to 16 and loved it, I was devastated to leave as was my mother, so am biased; also my parents live 50 mins away in Suffolk, which is where I was born. I would be thrilled if DD got an interview - we drove for open day from my parents my mother came with us and promptly fell asleep in the medicine talk! DD had Liverpool on her list, weird coincidence a friend had done some family research and we had the address of DD's great grandfather who was born there. His house now appears to be part of Anfield Stadium! Hull is furthest for us too, I worked with a sweet girl who is studying comp. sci there and she loves it, looks great on website - we visited York as it was nearer. Expecting a reject due to SJT 3 (after all 1's in mocks)!

Is there any pathway for medicine thru psychology pls advice

swingofthings · 16/11/2017 16:03

Hi Kiddle, welcome to the thread. Does this mean your daughter has started her first year of A levels? Not all Medical school require Biology A levels, but the vast majority do. Of those that don't require it, they usually require a second science subject, with some including Maths in there.

Bristol/Dundee/Keele: require another Science (not sure if counting Maths as such)
Cambridge/Edingburgh/Glasgow/Manchester/Newcastle/Sheffield/t Andrews: would be ok with Maths

So that leaves her with a few options, but clearly more limited. Did she do GCSEs? If so, how many A did she get. A number of those above expect high numbers of A, so if this has not been achieved, this will reduce even more her options as if she doesn't score high at the UKCAT/GMAT.

Some would allow A levels taken in two settings, so she could start biology the following year if she wanted to take a gap year. Many things to take unto consideration, but at least it's not totally impossible to apply for Medicine without Biology.

Hi Kiddle. Right, first thing to do is not panic, your daughter needs you to have a clear head. What are you coming to the Uk for? Where are you going to be staying? Applications for medicine 2018 entry have finished, so you are going to be looking at 2019 entry - this gives you lots of time to do something. Let us know a bit more and we will all help you to get started in the journey to meficine 😘

SomersetS · 16/11/2017 16:44

First interview received!!!!!!!!!!! HYMS 7/12. At last 🎉 DD delighted.
It is DDs favourite (Hull, not York) so everything crossed.

Mommymoomitzi · 16/11/2017 17:12

SomersetS - hooooorrrrayyyyyyy! 💐
Good luck to DD x

2B1Gmum · 16/11/2017 17:18

Congrats to your DD SomersetS, my DD has one too, very excited and slightly surprised. Looks like York and an afternoon interview, three days before her birthday. Yeah!

SomersetS · 16/11/2017 17:23

11am in York. (But she hopes to get Hull!).
Well done to you too.
Still waiting on Sheffield 😱. UKCAT was above cut off but still feeling very nervous.

2B1Gmum · 16/11/2017 17:32

Would have liked a chance to see Hull, but slightly shorter and cheaper train journey. Will you go early am or have to stay over? I don't know much about Sheffield other than what I have read here, but it seems strange not to have been in touch if others have heard and their cut off has been declared. Looking forward to a glass of wine this evening, husband and I, not DD on a school night:)

sluj · 16/11/2017 18:14

It's all getting very exciting. Hang on in there those who haven't heard anything yet. Plenty of time.
When DS got his interview in York we made a point of visiting Hull for the offer holders days so he could see both before he firmed any offers. We realised that for us in Hertfordshire, Hull is a whole lot further than York!!!

Trippy4 · 16/11/2017 19:19

Dad had an offer after interview for Hyms but pretty sure she wasn’t given a choice but randomly allocated Hull .Maybe different this year ?

Trippy4 · 16/11/2017 19:31

Sorry , read your posts properly and clear you already knew this about HYMs .Goodluck with the interviews . I tried to suggest it was a good choice ( partially influenced by the difference in accommodation price with Hull in particular and Dd s other options ),to no avail !

Trippy4 · 16/11/2017 19:31

Dd not Dad !

swingofthings · 16/11/2017 20:46

Great news Somerset Flowers I think I'm the only one waiting to hear! No worries as expected with DD choices! The earliest she is likely to hear anything is 1st week of December.

She would have got interview at Exeter today but changed for Manchester at the last minute! No regrets though as it's 99% certain she'll get an interview there and the school is more suited to her. Definitely testing our patience though :)

mumsneedwine · 16/11/2017 21:03

Well done Somerset DD !! Fantastic news. Sure Sheffield will come tomorrow. Saw a heartbreaking thing on TSR where a kid had received a rejection with a 700+ UKCAT, 6 As but had a C in Eng Lang. My DD showed me and said it seems so harsh.

Kiddle · 16/11/2017 21:36

Thanks swingofthings and mommymoomitzi.
She had taken GCE in singapore in 2016 mostlyshe achieved A and B .A* in second language. In 2017 she was in junior college singapore now she is repeating year 12.we are in uk already due to some delay in husband paper work we arrived late.

Kez100 · 16/11/2017 21:41

I know of someone who got no interviews with a C in English language. she applied a year later having nailed three brilliant a levels, used the extra year wisely and managed 4 interviews and 3 offers.

Hopefully it will all come good for those who want it so much and can pull off the academics

Kiddle · 16/11/2017 21:45

She got into school but biology is not offered. As i heard in singapore grade from singapore is converted but here no body does that .she had offered 3 pure science in GCE chem, bio and physics with maths and A maths together with combine humanities(literature and social studies)english and secong language where they can drop 1 science jus b4 GCE so she drop physics.most of 6 form look at 8 subject so she does not meet the point criteria.we were not aware of that.

proudwhatever · 16/11/2017 21:48

Well done all with interviews DDs and DSs how exciting for them all must make all the slog worthwhile.

Swing of things no news here for my DS long chat tonight as some jitters kicking in hoping UEA will kick in to life soon! Two BMATs and Birmingham so might be well in to his advent calendar before we hear any news. It feels like time is passing v slowly!

SomersetS · 16/11/2017 21:49

Seems harsh to turn down a C in English with everything else so good but I guess they have to draw lines somewhere. Poor lad. I saw it too. I can’t remember that being obvs but DD has all A/A* so I skimmed over those bits.

Have seen rejections/ interviews for Exeter on TSR - only predicted 3x A*s also seems harsh - they are just predictions after all.

Kiddle · 16/11/2017 21:50

I enquire one of the uni for entrance exam they said can go with psychology but without biology knowledge difficult to pass.

Mommymoomitzi · 16/11/2017 21:52

Kiddle. Has she applied this year?

mumsneedwine · 16/11/2017 21:53

It’s so hard that some interview early and some late. If did it again I’d get DD to factor that as one of her selection criteria 😁. Think next one for DD will be Nottingham and then who knows as others are after Xmas I think. They have to really want to become a doctor to go through all this when their friends just get offers straight away. DD off clubbing tomorrow night. How do I know ? A large bottle of Malibu has been plonked on my kitchen worktop. Maybe I should drink it 😇

Abra1d · 16/11/2017 21:58

Last year at Cardiff my daughter had a rather strange interviewer at one of the stations. He didn’t seem to know what he was supposed to ask her—this was the very first day they had ever done MMIs at Cardiff. My daughter found it a bit disconcerting, so it’s worth talking about how to react if you get someone like this, especially if you’re being interviewed early in the interview season.

With hindsight we shouldn’t have chosen the very first day but her diary was full of play rehearsals.

Kiddle · 16/11/2017 22:04

No will be applying next year
