Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

Sorry that response was to proudwhatever! I'm getting all flustered now!

Trippy4 · 08/11/2017 18:03

The Bsms application total was huge last year . DD is there now and they had a lovely get to know you tea for parents with the dean etc .He did tell me the exact number but I didn’t take it in ,trying to eat a very sticky brownie without disgracing myself .Hyms was the first off the mark with interviews for my D around now if I remember right .

watfordmummy · 08/11/2017 18:04

What thread should I be looking at on tsr, I logged in yesterday and it all seemed too complicated for me and I left quickly!! Need Mumsnet!!!

swingofthings · 08/11/2017 18:40

Not only did they have a massive increase of applications at BSMS last year but they reduced the number of interviews by something like 40 so ended up to be a double blow. The BMAT cut off was 17.5 I think, DD got 17.8, so if only it could be no worse than last year!!

watfordmummy, you have to do under the forum of Medicine and then the sub-forum of medical schools.

2B1Gmum · 08/11/2017 18:47

On the what to wear front, my DD's head is having a chat with all students (not just medicine etc.), she will be reading through their P.S. and if they do have interviews will apparently give advise on dress code - will be interested to hear what she says, but I predict it will be a suit with black of navy. IF my DD gets an interview she is planning on dark tartan trousers, a jacket and a blouse - I am keeping quiet for now, but suspect we will buy navy or black trousers. Tbh I think it is a bit sad if they all look alike, doctors have personalities too and my dentist friend loves bright colours and shoes with a heel. Really hard to tell which medical schools with have the highest numbers of applicants, the 'mummy and daddy list' (a term used by a local high performing independent) does seem to feature heavily in this area.

adrinkofwater · 08/11/2017 19:04

Good news in our house today - DD has an interview for Leicester! Smile She did score highly on their scoring system, so she was hoping for an interview from there, but still very exciting!

watfordmummy this should be the link to the Leicester medicine forum on tsr (I hope)
www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4898022

There are separate links for all the medical schools plus some general ones. Not sure if they are a good idea to follow or not...

Hope everyone gets some good news soon!

Trippy4 · 08/11/2017 19:22

Great news about the Leicester interview , good luck .

pixelchick10 · 08/11/2017 20:00

Congratulations to your DD adrink exciting! Time to sort that interview outfit!

proudwhatever · 08/11/2017 20:02

Wow that is great news drinkofwater fingers crossed!!!

swingofthings · 08/11/2017 20:03

Wahouh fabulous news adrinkofwater our official first interview! It's all on now! When is It?

SomersetS · 08/11/2017 20:31

Congrats to family adrinkofwater!
Keeping my fingers & toes crossed & trying not to fret.

LoniceraJaponica · 08/11/2017 21:18

Just checked on Leicester's scoring system and DD got 55.5, so it looks unlikely that she will get an interview. Oh well, three more to look at.

2B1Gmum · 08/11/2017 23:31

Congratulations on the Leicester interview - to mother and of course daughter, I hope she had a big smile and sigh of relief to get good news nice and early. DD Still working on the NAI for Manchester, some confusion over what they really want, but DD is focussing on things that she can talk about more at interview, as we imagine it may be part of one MMI station. B...y word count issues all over again, deja vu from P.S. only a matter of weeks ago, need to get this box ticked for the weekend.

swingofthings · 09/11/2017 06:14

2B1Gmum, yep, same here! DD was still working on it last night, then just announced she would send over to me to check it, oh and by the way, one section is too long, so you're ok to edit mum, grrrr, NO I'm not!

I don't understand how she spent so much time on her PS for Bristol, but has been so lax about this one. Anyway, I said I would cast an eye for grammar etc... so I hope she has still produced something decent. Indeed, it does feel like we've gone back in time! Except last time I could look forward to a holiday at the end of it!!

Lonicera, it's still crossing fingers for Leicester. No rejection, still a chance!

SomersetS · 09/11/2017 07:06

Lonicera we have the same score. Took a chance because DD liked it so much. It’s our riskiest choice. Increase in medicine applicants worries me that that score will be too low this year but hey ho.
Good luck!

LoniceraJaponica · 09/11/2017 07:39

And to your DD as well Somerset

adrinkofwater · 09/11/2017 09:27

Thanks. We feel really lucky to have heard back so early. DD was given dates to pick from 11th-14th Dec. On Leicester's website they give more dates for interviews in December, January and February, so there are more interviews to be given out. This was just the first batch.
Good luck to everyone

2B1Gmum · 09/11/2017 09:36

Swingofthings, I do feel for our Ds, my D asked too many people at school to read her PS and got such conflicting advise and reactions - but she wanted to replicate it because she was happy with it in the end and is confused about whether Manchester will even look at PS. Found a lovely youtube video, admittedly Cambridge medic. but talking about the interview question 'why medicine?'. Conclusion, you may sound cliched but if you are genuine it will come across, don't get to anxious about it. Think about which Unis read, score etc. P.S. I am now wondering which even read the school reference?

teta · 09/11/2017 11:19

Dd has her first Vet interview for Surrey later on this month. Bristol have already started giving out offers - mainly to the ones who submitted in early October . Dd hasn't even been sent the questionnaire yet. Bristol are well known for processing in batches apparently .There is no interviews this year - just the questionnaire in lieu of an interview.
I would like to reiterate what a long process applying for medicine/vet. can be.Dd didn't get any offers last year until late March/April and found it absolutely soul destroying .Especially as her friends all received offers before Christmas .I remember Dd shrinking in confidence daily and sleepless nights for me. Even the teachers were concerned for her and absolutely thrilled when she got her first offer. Try not to focus too much on applications as schoolwork is far more important. Although I do appreciate this is easy to say and very difficult to do.
Dd is working 5 days a week and shares a Chemistry tutor with her friend who is also retaking Chemistry. Plus she is doing some Volunteering work with the local Wildlife Rescue . This all helps her focus on other things rather than university applications which is so much better. Dd is on a somewhat enforced gap year , but it's been brilliant. She's regained her old confidence and is learning a lot about life and other people. Which will be useful whatever career she decides to go for.

pixelchick10 · 09/11/2017 17:53

I see Bristol have started giving out offers ...

SomersetS · 09/11/2017 19:10

DD just rang squealing from School (she’s the Chemistry demonstrator for 6th Form Open Evening tonight) that her 5th option, Applied Medical Science at Swansea have made her an offer. (AAB)
So pleased to hear her joy that “somebody wants me!”.
Gosh this process is hard for them (& us).Gin

mumsneedwine · 09/11/2017 19:44

That’s exactly what mine said Somerset - ‘somebody wants me’. It’s so hard as friends now getting floods of offers for other subjects. Some have 5 offers. Am pushing the plumber idea againSmile

Susiesue61 · 09/11/2017 20:13

Just reading through this thread as an old doctor (qualified 22 years ago) It seems mad that it is so hard to get in these days! I got in with ABB after an interview. I hope they all get what they want, and I hope that those who get in, enjoy being a doctor - I've really loved it, and it's a huge part of who I am 😊

SomersetS · 09/11/2017 20:22

Thank you Susiesue for positive words. Good to know you’ve been happy.

ABB 😂 if only!

adrinkofwater · 09/11/2017 20:36

Congratulations to your daughter Somerset. That's great news!
