Medicine 2018?

Katisha · 01/07/2017 12:13

Is there already a thread for medicine applications for 2018 entry?
If not can I start one?
Wondered if anyone knew about the Birmingham GCSE situation as DS has A stars and As at GCSE and likely to be predicted A stars at A level but is coming up on their offers calculator as unlikely to get an interview.
Is it pointless to apply to Birmingham if not all stars at GCSE? Didn't get a star in biology.

SomersetS - great news, fingers crossed. Nothing from Plymouth yet, but was stalking TSR re last year at Plymouth 🙄 It seems that they don't usually acknowledge for about a week, so feel a little better ...

swingofthings · 16/10/2017 09:53

Great news Somerset. Did your DD applied to Manchester in the end? DD was waiting from them as of yesterday - the secret did come out!

SomersetS · 16/10/2017 10:00

No. Hull Leicester Liverpool Sheffield. Was going to apply Southampton but got cold feet at last minute & swapped for Sheffield. She couldn’t be persuaded on Manchester, even with the French.

watfordmummy · 16/10/2017 19:29

Can’t remember what score I worked out on the day for Cardiff but he was happy with it.

Mommymoomitzi · 16/10/2017 20:14

Watfordmummy - did you get the Cardiff acknowledgement?

watfordmummy · 16/10/2017 21:36

No we haven’t, but DS not concerned as he’s not listening to this group of mums on Mumsnet!! Grin

Going to get him to chase on Wednesday if we he hasn’t heard from them. This is me being chilled (rocks in corner slowly)

Mommymoomitzi · 17/10/2017 06:47

watfordmummy - these DC don't seem to realise that we are the fonts of all knowledge, when it comes to medicine! 😂 I'm not sure what I will do next year, maybe I will have to find a hobby???? Let us know how you get on.

watfordmummy · 17/10/2017 07:12

You mean this isn’t our hobby?? Will I have to have a life??

Mommymoomitzi · 17/10/2017 07:33

😂😂😂😂. Enjoy your day. Keep off the Student Room.

Abra1d · 17/10/2017 13:00

You'll do what I did and simply join the next year's thread, reminiscing ...!

sluj · 17/10/2017 13:24

Me too - but with none of the stress 😉

Abra1d · 17/10/2017 14:15

😀

watfordmummy · 17/10/2017 16:11

Cardiff was in junk!! Phew all acknowledged now

swingofthings · 17/10/2017 17:31

You'll do what I did and simply join the next year's thread, reminiscing ... :) :)

I too am surprised how much lightweight I feel now that the application process is over. It didn't help that only two weeks ago, I was also applying for job, so going through it for myself!

DD heard from Manchester, and has registered BSMS with BMAT so her results are sent (which I think doesn't need to be done if taking it in November, but needs to be if taken in September).

teta · 18/10/2017 12:48

Thank you for the nice welcome Mommy and Swing.
Mommy I would have much preferred Dd to do Medicine ( she comes from a family of medics) but no she's determined to be a Vet sadly.
We're waiting for the Surrey questionnaire as there is a admin issue currently. Dd has to pass the Questionnaire before being invited for an interview. Luckily this year we are seeing it as a series of hoops to jump through, unlike last year when we perceived everything as life or death.

Mommymoomitzi · 18/10/2017 21:41

Teta - Questionnaire! Oh my, lucky you 😂 I have been throwing balls of paper at my office bin today, thinking "if this goes in, DD will get an interview. Luckily, I own the company, otherwise I would be unemployed by now. This waiting, it's like being 9 months pregnant again.......

LoniceraJaponica · 20/10/2017 11:22

DD has heard from all of hers. Now the waiting game. Her plan B is for diagnostic radiography and she has been told she may need to submit a different personal statement for that because the one she has done is focused on medicine only.

Mommymoomitzi · 20/10/2017 22:17

All 4 acknowledged. Will wait to hear from you all x

watfordmummy · 20/10/2017 22:47

Didn’t think you were allowed to do a second personal statement??

I was very impressed with a thank you postcard DS1 received from Southampton today...manners aren’t dead!!

LoniceraJaponica · 20/10/2017 23:11

Neither did I watford. DD's personal statement is very obviously aimed at applying for medicine, so I don't know what else she could have done.

watfordmummy · 21/10/2017 09:29

DS statement is definitely for medicine, so would’ve been handy to have done one for his 5th. Never mind

mumsneedwine · 21/10/2017 09:48

Not sure many courses even read it. My DD got offered her 5th choice and her PS is v obviously for medicine.

LoniceraJaponica · 21/10/2017 10:19

So, if DD hasn't heard from her 5th choice yet can I assume that she hasn't got in? She may not get any interviews either, so I suppose she will have to wait for clearing then?

pixelchick10 · 21/10/2017 10:48

No LJ I wouldn’t assume that - the offer can come at any time. My DD did get her fifth (non-med) choice quickly (Birmingham, biomedical science) but just because you haven’t heard yet doesn’t mean you won’t get an offer. DD’s PS was just tailored to medicine too ...

adrinkofwater · 21/10/2017 11:20

Lonicera I don't think you can assume she hasn't got in. All the universities seem to have different systems and take different amounts of time to give out offers. One of my DDs friends who is applying for business and French has 3 offers and heard nothing from the other 2. I remember similar things last year with friends DCs that some offers came quickly and others took ages. Don't give up!

My DD didn't put a 5th choice down so its all hinging on medicine here!
